In other words, where the '80s really the only decade that a sitcom with a decidedly silly premise like ALF could've worked and been successful? For example, would it have stuck out like a sore thumb in the '70s, along side the gritty shows and contemporary social issues like those from Norman Lear or The Mary Tyler Moore Show or the more cynical and/or "Must See TV"-style (a la Seinfeld and Friends) of the '90s.
In fairness, the 1970s also gave us Mork & Mindy and Soap. And the 1990s gave us Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Plus, the decade prior to the '70s was filled with wacky, fantastic shows like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and My Favorite Martian.
