It's kind of funny: back then, a free phone was a major commodity, and there was usually just one land line per house. It was rare to even have a second line. Now everyone has his/her own phone, and no one even has landlines.

You couldn't do a "Nancy's hogging the phone" subplot anymore. You could, however, have a teenage girl constantly on her cell phone, or texting. It wouldn't be a huge role, but it would be true to life... although now boys are just as connected to their phones.

I knew of one Roger in our local rural community back at home. And I have a second cousin Roger that is more my parents' generation.
