I wonder what Charlotte's and Molly's relationship was? We saw the the cold opener to "Flash Flood" where Mrs. Garrett was having a one on one conversation with Molly that was taped from Facts of Love.

It looked like they had a close relationship on and off the screen during the first season. We saw that Charlotte had her arms around Molly during the final wrap cast and crew photo. Charlotte remembers Molly's mother's banana cream pies and even sent flowers to Molly when Molly had a concert 10 years ago. Molly finally thanked her for the flowers on Charlotte's 90th birthday special.

They must have been close for Charlotte to remember what dessert Molly's mother made forty years earlier.

Or she must really love banana cream pies!

Really though, that is lovely that they had those special feelings and respect for each other. A sweet moment of this is seen early on in "The Return of Mr. Garrett" in the final moments. When Blair says they'll ask the Ouija board who Mrs. Garrett's next boyfriend will be, Blair and Sue Ann join Mrs. Garrett with the younger girls (and Nancy), and Mrs. Garrett and Molly have this beautiful little moment of affection:

Yes, that embrace and kiss are just wonderful!

...And it kind of feels like a similar moment to the "our group" moment, only with the whole group of girls present. Before any revamps.

You're right, back when it was organically "The Facts of Life", going on the original premise of what the show was. This is such a warm, cozy group moment that feels so nostalgic.

Yes, Miss Rae definitely seemed to be a naturally huggy person- especially in the early years of 'Strokes' and 'FOL' but this seemed less evident as the latter show progressed.

That's a good point: there were fewer hugs as the show became more corporate, and as the show shifted from the feel-good 1970s to the material 1980s.

Garrett Hugs were common circa 1979 or 1980. Valentina pointed out the wonderful moment between Blair and Mrs. Garrett at the end of Season 5, when Mrs. Garrett caresses her cheek, but you can''t go wrong with a patented 1979 Mrs. Garrett Hug™.

Definitely nostalgia. And it's not just the Garrett Hug™: that really nice kiss planted on Molly's face is quite the tender gesture.

To paraphrase Mrs. Garrett: there's nothing wrong with hugging and kissing girls. It shows you are a loving person. Up here at the school, these girls are your family.

We were taught this from the very first episode.

Now you have me thinking of tallying "Garrett Hugs" or "Garrett Touches" when I binge the show again.

And she exemplifies it with another Lost Girl--"that Sue Ann," when Blair and Sue Ann first "taxi over to the bed" to join the others, while Molly holds onto Mrs. Garrett before their tender moment:

And interestingly, in this bed moment, Mrs. Garrett is surrounded closest by a foursome: Blair, Sue Ann, Molly, Tootie. That would have been interesting to see as a Core Four (I mean, any combination would have been interesting, lol, I just don't know if we've thought of this one yet).

Charlotte seemed like a very loveable and sweet person. Her scenes on Diff'rent Strokes always end with a hug or a kiss. But she still hugs the girls in the later seasons. I don't remember an occasion in season 7 but the final scene of "The Interview Show" shows us a sweet moment between Edna and the Core Four. And of course she hugs them in "Out of Peekskill"

Yes, she seemed like she would be, but the girls said she was much more professional than maternal (at least after season 1).

They were growing up. Maybe Charlotte thought it would have been better if they had kept a professional relationship. Anyway, where did you read that? I have always thought Charlotte said the girls were politely distant because they thought she was part of the management

Maybe she feared getting too close to them after what happened at the end of Season 1.

It is a GREAT cast photo, but I don't believe it was taken at the end of the season. Rather, I believe it was taken at the beginning of the second part of the first season, after the six-month hiatus, along with many other cast photos, like the one below.

If you look carefully, you will see that both Mindy and Lisa are wearing the same shirts in both photos (Mindy's shirt has a heart/plant on one side; Lisa's shirt has short sleeves and a plunging neckline). Julie Anne and Julie Pie's hairstyles are also basically identical in both photos (Julie Anne's hair is down, curled, and parted in the middle; Julie Pie's hair is pulled back with her curls piled over her shoulders). John is wearing the same tweed jacket in both photos. Charlotte may be wearing the same dress in both photos, although it's hard to tell for sure. The brown beaded necklace she is wearing is visible in both photos, and the collar of the dress looks the same. Felice's hair looks similar in both photos.

The below photo must have been taken at the beginning of the second half of Season 1 in order to promote the show. Since the above photo shows half of the cast in the same clothes, it was likely taken on the same day. Otherwise, there are too many coincidences.

I was going by the sweater Molly was wearing. It's similar to what she wore in Dope.

It seems the first seasons girls will say she was warm and maternal, but the Core Four will say she was more emotionally distant and very business-like (after season 1).

It may be from the same period, but I would say definitely not the same photo shoot. Cindy's hair is a little different, Blair's hair is flatter in the color pic, and Molly and Tootie's outfits are different.

Since this is a full cast and crew, my assumption would be it's either when they reconvened to shoot 9 more episodes, or when they had a "wrap party" at the end of the season.

A simple change of clothes explains Molly's and Kim's clothes changing. It's a lot more difficult to explain why Charlotte is wearing the same dress and necklace, why Mindy and Lisa are wearing the same shirts, and why Julie Pie, Julie Anne, and Felice have identical/similar hairstyles.

Yes, that is what I am saying.

or when they had a "wrap party" at the end of the season.

That is too late for this photo, which appears to have been taken at the same time as a photo that wouldn't have been taken during a wrap party.

Not difficult: Great hair and wardrobe people. :)

The Julies' hair(s lol) and Blair's and Molly's and Felice's are similar, not identical. No one's looks like they could be truly identical except possibly Kim's.

Mindy's hair looks quite a bit shorter in the colored photo, and not just because it's pulled up into pigtails. They're fairly short pigtails.

Why would they change clothes if this was on the same day? It's possible, but...

Timing is all speculation until one of us asks one of the girls who is not Felice.

Why would they even have the cast wear clothes they wore months earlier, in a different photo shoot?

They're curled more tightly and pulled back, instead of straight down.

Why would they change clothes if this was on the same day?

They changed clothes several times for the photo shoot.

Yes, but her hair still seems shorter.

Unless they did more than one shoot.

Could be here, could be there. Could be is, could be isn't. I'm not saying anything definite. I was just playing Devil's advocate.

Further investigation finds the cast and crew photo may not be from the beginning of season 1B after all (I had been leaning toward that's when it was). Director John Bowab is sitting by Charlotte on the couch, and his first episode wasn't until "Dieting", more than halfway through the first season. So it's pointing to it being sometime between:

Dieting
Adoption
Running
The Facts of Love
Flash Flood
Dope

(not "Molly's Holiday", as that was taped before Mr. Bowab started directing)

I agree with you guys: CHARLOTTE was definitely more cuddly and affectionate towards the girls during the whole season 1 (another reason why i love this era so much lol!) but i'd say in most group photos it was always LISA standing next to her, and less MOLLY, but you could tell she was close to all the girls indeed!

I think the cast had more leeway in their wardrobe than in later years. I've seen Felice wear the same rainbow outfits off stage. Molly often wore the same type of suspender overalls off stage.
