View Full Version : Questions sitcoms left unanswered

Pretty much every sitcom has them, they can be something about the characters or incidents that happened on the show or almost anything really. I thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss. I'll start things off.

I have 2 I can think of off the top of my head for Seinfeld. On the show what led to the hostility and hatred between Jerry and the recurring character Newman (wonderfully played by Wayne Knight) is never explained. But whatever it was, Jerry's mom has the same hatred for Newman too so one could assume from that that whatever incident started it, involved Newman treatly Jerry badly or unfairly. Also pertaining to that, we're never told Newman's first name.

Another Seinfeld related question. How does Kramer pay his bills if he doesn't work? He did work at H&H Bagels, but has been on strike for several years. I don't think acting out illnesses or returning bottles to Michigan in Newman's mail truck generated much income. In one episode, George rhetorically asks how Kramer falls ass-backwards into money, but no details are given. So maybe he got a huge inheritance or a nice insurance settlement.

1. Yeah, good question as to why Jerry despised Newman so much! It's interesting that HE was the one in the quartet who openly disliked Newman while the other three seemed to at least tolerate Newman's presence- ignoring Jerry's dislike. One would have thought that George would have been the one with the dislike since he was by far the most petty of the quartet!

2.True, we never found out Newman's first name but, let's not forget that it took YEARS from Kramer's first name to be revealed (at one point Jerry was calling Kramer's mother and even then said 'your son KRAMER'!).

3. Good question about how Kramer's source/s of income was never revealed. He always seemed to be on the verge of poverty yet he kept his (for Manhattan) spacious apartment across from Jerry. Perhaps the landlord didn't want to have to deal with evicting him.

And now for a sitcom question of my own (from 'Boy Meets World').

After Chet's death, Shawn's legal mother Virna reveals that she is NOT Shawn's bio mom- yet Shawn finds no clues as to who she may have been then TOTALLY abandons the search when Chet's Ghost makes the claim that said bio mom flew the coop BEFORE they could even tell her 'it's a boy!' and her identity and fate NEVER gets resolved even in the lamentable 'Girl Meets World' sequel!

Wasn't Kramer a baker who was on strike for 15-20 years?

I seem to recall a wacky storyline where he finally is fired.

I think you're right but I got so burned out by the show, I never watched it again after the Finale!

Yes, he worked at H&H Bagels, but was on strike for 12 years. He finally went back to work after the strike ended, but he ended up getting fired when he got gum in the bagel dough.

He'd have kept his job had a dropped a Junior Mint (which would have enhanced the flavor)!

I never really thought about this either. They could have worked in a brief flashback.

As for Kramer and affording the apt., one episode concentrated on his betting. Maybe he was always playing the horses and winning. He'd have to be really good, 'cause N.Y. apts. ain't cheap.

I guess Chuck Cunningham, Judy Winslow, along with Vinny, Roy, Nancy and the Pigeon Sisters from 'The Odd Couple' all ran off together but who knows!

BTW, whatever happened to Rhoda's other sister Debbie? Rhoda and Mary went to the Bronx to attend her wedding but barely met her, never seemed to lay eyes on the groom and spent most of the time arguing with Ida(at least Rhoda did)- and Debbie as well as her invisible groom NEVER got mentioned again even when 'Rhoda' was its own show!

Good question- but even more intriguing is how was the Professor able to make all kinds of equipment to make life more comfortable for the Castaways out of nothing but bamboo and coconuts- yet was unable to patch the boat or even send a legit distress signal?

Not sure. Maybe the Professor enjoyed being stranded on a deserted island with a couple of attractive, single women.

What happened to Sgt. Kinchloe on “Hogan’s Heroes”? As far as we know, there was never a successful escape from Stalag 13. And, yet during the final season, Kinchloe is gone and a new guy named Baker is there as the explosives/communication expert. Was Sgt. Kinchloe tragically killed on a sabotage mission or while actually trying to escape? We never found out.

And, on “That ‘70s Show,” whatever happened to Donna Pinciotti’s younger sister? Since Point Place, Wisconsin is so close to Milwaukee, did the younger Pinciotti daughter run off with a much older Chuck Cunningham from nearby Milwaukee with Chuck literally robbing the cradle?

Finally, what happened to the tough Russian, whom Paulie Walnuts and Christopher Moltisanti took to the New Jerry Pine Barrens to bump off? Okay, I realize that some people will say that “The Sopranos” was not a comedy series. But I say that you cannot watch a Sopranos episodes and NOT laugh after hearing Tony Soprano’s malaprops during his therapy sessions with Dr. Melfi or Uncle Junior’s politically-incorrect jokes or, probably most of all, the wit and wisdom of Mr. Paulie “Walnuts” Gualteri, the veritable poet laureate of Verona, NJ!

Garry Marshall and the other producers thought it would open up more writing opportunities if Oscar dated other women so they fired Joan Hotchkis.

Vinny lasted longer than Roy. Roy just wasn't very interesting or funny.

Good answers everybody. I've got a few from The King Of Queens. One of the regulars, Doug's friend Richie disappears after the 2nd or 3rd season and is never seen or mentioned again without explanation. And in the first season for the first few episodes, Carrie actually has a sister named Sarah. But like Richie, Sarah disappears without explanation and they eventually started writing Carrie as an only child. But I've read that Kevin James said in an interview they dropped the character of Sarah because they couldn't think of anything to write for the character and didn't really know what to do with her either.

'TAGS' Barney Fife's longtime flame Thelma Lou (the recently deceased Betty Lynn) was not known by any other name than that.

Hence, one can't be sure whether her surname was 'Lou' or was it something else that never got mentioned?

Along those lines, in 'According to Jim' Jim, Cheryl and their children's surname never got revealed (even when they have official business happening that would require legal surnames being used). Also, Chery, Andy's and Dana's original surname never get revealed but Dana's later married surname DOES! I wonder why they went to so much trouble to avoid giving surnames to the main cast?

Nope, Suzanne Somers had long since left the show and Joyce DeWitt did not like how the producers handled the news of the Three's A Crowd spin-off that I'd doubt they'd be coerced to return for a cameo.

Kramer dropped his bubble gum in the bagel dough. He dropped his junior mint into a patient at the hospital being operated on, "Triangle Boy", the fat starving artist and Elaine's ex boyfriend.

Oh, yeah, I had figured that Penny's surname was going to be revealed in The Big Bang Theory's series finale, but I got into a nasty argument about it over at the TBBT Fansite, and I even went as far as suggesting that, by not having surnames, Penny's family members could be like most people in Indonesia. The truth is, I was actually hoping for such a reveal because I am terrible at fan fiction.
