step by step?? I never knew this because I think I only watched step by step when I was in Highschool and stopped watching after season 2

I get the feeling that Don Knotts wasn't one to hold grudges, and the documentary that Joyce was a part of indicated that Don was happy to get more lines when Suzanne's part was minimized. The writers could fairly easily take a dumb Chrissy line and turn it into a dumb Mr. Furley line.

I also get the feeling he was just a really kind guy, so even if his role hadn't been expanded, I feel like he would have agreed to do the show. Joyce and John were more brittle, more worried about their careers, and it's been made clear that women had very little voice on that series, which would have made Joyce even more brittle.

So, while I don't blame John or Joyce for their anger towards Suzanne trying to hog the spotlight, I see where Don just wouldn't have held the same kind of grudge.
