View Full Version : Thread Creation Limit?
Babalu 11-26-2021, 12:37 PM Is there or has there been talk of limiting the number of threads a member can create in a day? On the Chit Chat and Political boards especially, the same few posters create repetitive threads clogging up the board. One of the big offenders seems to have disappeared for a couple of months but there are others still active. Maybe limiting thread creations in each section each day?
icecream 11-26-2021, 02:02 PM Members shouldn't be limited in how many threads they can create, that would just reduce the activity on this site. You can always put someone on your ignore list if their threads are getting too much for you.

There’s degrees of spamming though. There’s a difference between the idiot who spams the board with Valerie Bertinelli threads (I hate that guy!) and someone who spends all day every day spamming with false, misleading, and potentially dangerous medical “information”.

I also worry about the medical "information" posts. It's a veritable flood. Every day there are new and even crazier theories, and each theory contradicts the one before it. It was bad enough when the posts were anti-mask; now they're anti-mask, pro-apocalypse, anti-vax, government-is-killing-us, lizard-people-control-the-government, magnetic-patients, black-eyed-babies, so-and-so-is-Jesus-reborn, crop-circles-are-real, Archons-are-controlling-the-media, and God knows what else.
In 1998, I met a nice lady from Kansas. Well, she seemed nice, but partway into our conversation, she told me that the government was monitoring everything that she said. Then the conversation got even weirder. She said they had put a chip in her brain as part of some kind of experiment. Very soon thereafter, I saw the local police take her away. It seems she had made threats at a local store, likely related to the paranoia she was experiencing.
It isn't healthy that this has gone on, now, for nearly a year. It's not healthy for the Sitcoms Online community, and it isn't healthy for the person spending all day, every day, posting this stuff here and cross-posting it to dozens of other forums. Yes, I know we have the option to put someone on Ignore, but that doesn't prevent the forums from being abused and spammed by someone who isn't mentally well if they believe the government is trying to kill us/make us magnetic/give us black-eyed children/whatever else.
It's better to have no Politics forum at all than a Politics forum that gets astroturfed like this.
PhoenixAcres 11-27-2021, 01:27 AM As long as threads generate responses there's no incentive to put a restriction like that in place. I think I know who you're talking about on the Chit Chat board and while it is a lot for one person, practically all of their threads have stimulated discussion. It was pretty dead before so I see this as a positive.
As for the Politics forum, there's always been a mostly laissez-faire philosophy surrounding the content. Notorious conspiracy theorist Kat Hak Sung posted here (among many other places) for over 5 years and I guarantee nothing being said right now comes close to the level of what he was posting. My point being that the scope of discussion on that forum has always been kept extremely large, since it's a sort of catch-all forum for stuff not allowed anywhere else. If TJ wants to adjust the rules in light of the new wave of threads I'll stand behind his decision though.
I doubt anyone gets their geopolitical news exclusively from Sitcoms Online and takes every claim to heart. At worst every post should be a catalyst for further research.

All the recent food ones? A bit repetitive, but people love talking about food, and those threads aren’t putting anyone susceptible to misinformation at risk. Don’t think the complaints are about those.
icecream 11-27-2021, 01:51 AM I see the ganging up on Caroline and trying to drive her away from the boards is still going on. Just ignore her posts if you hate her that much, calling her mentally unwell is something that also should be kept to yourself. Members here have the right to express their opinions regardless of how much you disagree with them. Besides, I doubt that is who Babalu was talking about as he mentioned the politics board which she has been banned from, and chit chat. I just checked the most recent page of chit chat, only 2 of those threads were started by Caroline. Lay off and leave her alone! The continued attacks on her are pathetic.

Oh lord. Shoot me. Shoot me now.

Have you seen the Politics forum lately? She was unbanned with the promise from her that she wouldn't post links. That promise lasted all of 24 hours... actually, I don't think it even took that long.

I requested my access to the politics board blocked a few months ago, so wouldn't have seen anything in that forum lately.

The food discussions are among my favorite. Can't go wrong with food this time of year. :turkey::frosty:

There should be a food network (don’t know what we’d call it though ). Then Valerie Bertinelli could have a show on it.

Okay, then I completely understand where you're coming from. There are currently more than 25 vaccine threads on the first page of Politics, 21 of them created by Caroline... and another 25 on the second page also authored by her, and another 25 on the third page, also started by her, etc. It's mass spamming, and I don't feel it's healthy. I don't hate Caroline. I fear what she is doing will harm someone through misinformation. I'd feel the same about someone claiming there have been NO side effects to the vaccine: that would also be dangerous misinformation.

All good advice, and I think you are giving the same advice TJ himself would give, so thank you.

Did you honestly think people were bothered by just her two chit chat threads?
icecream 11-27-2021, 02:29 AM Did you honestly think people were bothered by just her two chit chat threads?Babalu still did specify chit chat as well as politics. I have an idea it might be someone I put on my ignore list awhile back, but can't be sure there. And tonight is the first I was hearing about Caroline being unbanned since I don't go to the politics board or see anything from it anymore.

Fair enough
GentlemanJim 11-27-2021, 10:52 AM Why would TJ want to restrict content creation? Isn't it all about convincing the advertisers that there are page views here? EG worth them spending their advertising budget here....you know, the whole "truth, justice, and products from AmWay...sort of thing? (hail capitalism!!)
I would no sooner take medical advice from some crackpot on an internet message board, than I would try to distill meaningful social commentary from any post 1967 sitcom....s'all good!
There are no options in the software to limit the amount of new threads created by members per day. People should use common sense and their own judgment with the volume of new threads they are making. It may seem like more, but I don't think anyone is creating more than a few threads per day.
We could use fewer COVID-19 related threads. Realistically we could have maybe 3-4 active threads.
Informative Vaccine Thread
Is this Coronavirus scare going TOO far? 2.0
one general anti-vaccines and side effects thread - Recent Reported Side Effects from the "jabs"
We don't need a new thread created for every adverse reaction to the vaccines. Too many threads are cluttering up the board.

On another VBB site im on (NWS>planetsuzy.org<NWS)) there is a limit how many threads you can post during your visit.... (Or maybe its per 24hrs Im not sure)
stevea 11-27-2021, 08:12 PM Have you seen the Politics forum lately? She was unbanned with the promise from her that she wouldn't post links. That promise lasted all of 24 hours... actually, I don't think it even took that long.
I'd not heard of any ban on links from her. That can be enforced if TJ weighs in on it.
Also I've said before that I don't think anyone on here has the need to feel like they need to save the world when it comes to bad advice. Maybe there should be a disclaimer in the rules. Or a rule against dispensing what can be construed as medical advice.
RetroGuy2000 11-27-2021, 08:51 PM I'd not heard of any ban on links from her. That can be enforced if TJ weighs in on it.
In September, Caroline promised not to post links as part of her return to the Politics forum. At that time, it seemed clear that promise {"Then pls allow me back in. I won't post any covid/vaccine links") meant she wouldn't post any Covid-19 or vaccine links. That promise was quickly reneged upon, nearly a hundred times, as far as I can tell. I think she merely forgot about the promise here on SO because she's busy doing similar activist work on many other forums, and it wouldn't be possible to remember which forums have which rules. I also know that bans and other actions are meant to be temporary; I don't think there's any need for any mod to now enforce a restriction that failed many months ago. A laissez-faire approach to moderating, like Phoenix mentioned, totally makes sense, given that it has breathed some new life into these forums.
Also I've said before that I don't think anyone on here has the need to feel like they need to save the world when it comes to bad advice.
That argument is true, but there's also the argument that TJ has stated there are a good number of special-needs users here. Users that would be easily influenced by bad medical advice.
But I'm really just responding to what Babalu has stated about the threads being repetitive, and Opus' comment about the posts containing bad medical advice. I'm not advocating for any action, just mentioning my concern, and replying to those who have kindly replied to me.
stevea 11-27-2021, 08:53 PM Based on TJ's comment above I've consolidated all (well, I probably have a few more to do) the small COIVD-related threads into one thread, and retitled it. for all virus-related discussion.
stevea 11-27-2021, 08:55 PM Retro, your point about special needs is well-taken. Also I once felt the need to warn against giant doses of vitamin C.

I saw, and remember. I appreciated it. I also know that user's vitamin C recommendation wasn't meant to be harmful.

Does this mean my daily morning glass of orange juice is deadly? I find it hard to believe anything with the initials OJ could be a killer.
stevea 11-27-2021, 09:37 PM LOL!
Yes, OJ can be deadly. (But only if you have reflux!)
stevea 11-27-2021, 09:39 PM I saw, and remember. I appreciated it. I also know that user's vitamin C recommendation wasn't meant to be harmful.
Very true.

The Moved redirects will be gone after Monday, and things will be a lot cleaner.

Deliberately tried not to get specific to embarrass anyone. A couple OK. Creating eleven in a few days on one subject is way too many.
stevea 11-28-2021, 02:38 PM The Moved redirects will be gone after Monday, and things will be a lot cleaner.
I should also have said, I consolidated all the smaller COVID threads into one. A few other threads with many posts are still there.
Dude111 11-28-2021, 07:24 PM That promise was quickly reneged upon....Please back off OK??
You only believe what MSM says which is why you dont like what me and Carole post..... You cant censor the truth my friend, your as bad as they are!!
Who cares how many links she posts?? This is very important whats going on now!!!!!
MSM IS LYING ABOUT THIS..... MAJORLY. They are keeping you in fear

I think it has more to do with your and her motives being suspect.
How many times has she said she doesn't care what other people think? I even went as far on one occasion to thank her for being thoughtful enough to share her info, and was blindsided with the assurance that it was not a matter of her being thoughtful.
So, what does that leave? She just wants to annoy the crap out of every one? Seems the most plausible of any available explanation. So, perhaps this is just the way of the world pushing back?
Neither of you are making arguments that are particularly persuasive, so it appears highly improbable that you are going to change any minds merely through stubborn repetition.
So, what realistic goal can there be, if not just the intent to annoy? I think you've both succeeded with flying colors towards that end.;):D:D:happyface
