View Full Version : Painful food experiences you have had?! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Janice Johnson 11-22-2021, 12:58 PM I was at a Buffet and I saw a green paste by the Sushi. I thought,"Hmm. This green paste must be guacomole, yum! :D I scoop it up. I took a spoonful of it, and...
I damn near felt like I was going into analyphytic (Spelling?) Shock! I was like,"What kind of DEVIL food paste did I just eat? 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
The green paste was a little something called Wasabi, a spicy and pungent paste that usually isn't eaten by the spoonful, but put as a tiny dab on sushi.
GentlemanJim 11-22-2021, 03:00 PM One time I inhaled a sweat bee, and he stung me right in that spot you feel when food "goes down the wrong pipe"....and my throat constricted so bad that I thought for sure I was gonna suffocate...plus the pain of the sting. I really had to concentrate to force myself to breath.
And then there was the day I was chopping up habanero peppers for a sauce,..finished,...and had to use the restroom..and didn't think to wash my hands before. The heat started setting in about 2 minutes after I left the restroom...and at first it was funny, in a "gee you are dumb" sort of way...but the pain kept rising...and within 10 minutes, I was in complete agony. Lasted about 45 minutes,

Janice, the idea is to mix a "little" wasabi in some terayaki sauce and dunk pieces of sushi in this dip. I've been eating sushi for many years and love love love it, but know about wasabi.

I had a similar experience with wasabi the first time.
And so did Fran Fine:

I saw the "Fran Eats Wasabi," clip on Your about a year ago, and Fran's SHOCKED face:eek: reminded me of my reaction when I ate the Spoonful of Wasabi that I thought was Guacomole.:eek: I thought to myself something like,"Fran, I had a similar reaction to Wasabi myself!":crazy::eek:
RetroGuy2000 11-22-2021, 04:13 PM One time I was eating at Panda Express and there were some dried peppers on the side (I didn't order them and they weren't usually part of the dish). I thought they were dried red peppers, but suspect, now, that they were chili de arbol peppers (https://www.chilipeppermadness.com/chili-pepper-types/medium-hot-chili-peppers/chile-de-arbol-chili-peppers/), which can have a Scoville Heat Unit range of up to 65,000 (more typical is 15,000 to 30,000). Whatever it was, it was WAY hotter than a jalapeno: my eyes started watering, my throat swelled up, and then my head exploded. :sarah:

Thank you for the tip! :D But at the time, I had no idea what Wasabi was and I thought it was Guacomole. What was your first Wasabi experience like? :)

Oh I don't know, I've been eating sushi for decades. And on the peppers in some hot chinese foods, just know NOT to eat them. That is common sense.
Wawwie 11-22-2021, 05:09 PM I love falafel, but my body can not tolerate it. I don't know what it is. I've had falafel 3 times. The first time, it just made me nauseous and I thought maybe it was the flu bug or something. The second time, I was severely vomiting all night so I knew that the first time, it was the falafel that made me sick. So by then, I knew that I had a falafel intolerance but I loved it. So I decided to get some "beano" thinking that if I just took some beano right before the first bite, I'd be able to go back to eating falafel. Well, I was dead wrong. The third and last time I had falafel, I took "beano" right before the first bite. "Beano" is a food enzyme that's supposed to prevent gas and stomach discomfort. Well, it did not help at all because I was vomiting uncontrollably, so bad that most of my muscles were very sore from vomiting. Now I know I can never have falafel again. That's the only food that ever made me violently ill.

That’s a no-no in sushi etiquette. Never mix them together like that.
Use your chopstick to dab a little bit of wasabi on one side of the sushi and then dip the other end into the soy sauce.

Believe what you want James, I have been doing what I do for many yrs and Use a Fork, I don't want to struggle with sticks.

What do you mean "Believe what I want"? That's not proper sushi etiquette. It doesn't matter how long you're doing it.
A fork? Blasphemy. Use your hands.

That really sounds awful, Wawwie. A least you know what caused it, and can avoid it in the future. Sometimes, people just can't figure out what caused the problem.

I had something similar happen with an oven-baked pizza in a local pizzaria. I mean,( unlike my Denny's experiences), it was delicious and I would have loved to have had MORE of it. but. ..
later that night, I got a bad case of runs. SO bad that I awoke several times having to race to outrun said runs. The only significant meal I'd had was that pizza so I had to sadly conclude that THAT was the culprit and had to put it on my 'NEVER again' list. Not too long afterwards, I saw a sign that said that the pizzaria had gone out of business.
Somehow, I'm not surprised but I'm wondering how it was that they were able to make delicious, fresh traditional pizza YET said pie had that fatal flaw?
Caroline13 11-22-2021, 08:12 PM Hey James, as far as I'm concerned there is no right or wrong on how we Americans want to eat our sushi, with teryaki, wasabi or without, with fingers, sticks or fork. The sushi bars are happy to make it for us and we pay them and we can eat it how we want to.
Some I'm sure don't use either of the two condiments.

It's just that you're disadvantaging yourself by not eating it the way that it's meant to be. The soy sauce and wasabi are not required and it's to be used sparingly so it doesn't take away the taste of the fish.
One is free to eat their soup with a fork or put salad dressing on a steak if they wish.

I am not disadvantaging myself for a second....:rolleyes:
Janice Johnson 11-22-2021, 09:24 PM I once inadvertently ate a HABENERO! I was in HUGE spicy pain and I was begging the Water and Ice Gods for mercy so to speak.  I was like,"Water and ice, please free me from this HUGE pain I am in. " The horrendous pain subsided about 30 minutes later. I mentioned this on another Website, and someone humorously said something like,"You REALLY should have been begging the Milk God for Mercy after inadvertently eating a Habenero, not the water and ice Gods".  Another Poster said he also inadvertently ate a Habenero and was in so much pain he wondered if eating a Habenero was the way he was going to die.
Caroline13 11-22-2021, 10:15 PM Janice I do believe I heard this about the milk and eating something too hot.
And I have always remember when I burn a finger to run cold water over the finger.

Always a shame when you realize something you really like isn't meant for you.
I cannot eat black olives, even though I love them.

Especially if you're allergic to the foods you love. 😞
Janice Johnson 11-24-2021, 09:52 AM I ate this Popcorn from Orville Redenbacher that was popped in it's own popcorn bowl and had came with a butter reminiscent of butter from movie theaters. The very next day, I got Norovirus. My front and my end had a War.

I mix my Wasabi and Soy Sauce together and I
think that is just fine. Don't be so critical.

I find Sour Cream or Yogurt(full fat) is best when eating something spicy

I think they go very well together and
the soy sauce tames some of the Wasabi's
heat. Again, don't be so critical.

It's possible that Poppy the Sloppy was the cook in that Pizzeria (Seinfeld reference, ;)
