If I need a hot drink the go to is hot chocolate. Wawwie 11-19-2021, 01:38 AM I just never got past the smell of coffee. I used to do tea, but it’s been a long time. If I need a hot drink the go to is hot chocolate. You're definitely one in a billion. Most people love the smell of coffee, but you are unique! I also like hot chocolate a lot. So since you don't drink coffee and don't really do tea, what do you drink with your breakfast? RetroGuy2000 11-19-2021, 01:54 AM I'm also surprised about Opus and the coffee, especially with all of the coffee Valerie Bertinelli drinks and puts in her desserts. Like, there are even Valerie Bertinelli coffee quotes. RetroGuy2000 11-19-2021, 02:01 AM I did not like the taste of coffee when I was younger, but always liked the smell. I now enjoy ice coffee, which is less overpowering. I don't know if there's any popular food I haven't tried. I know I didn't have an avocado until I had my first guac dish at age 12. I also didn't have Chinese take-out until I was maybe 16. Those foods were not sold where I lived until I was a little older. RetroGuy2000 11-19-2021, 02:04 AM I have NEVER had Beef Wellington. I love seafood but the smell of tuna fish repulses me so badly that I have never and will never try it. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 12:21 PM Those aren't POPULAR foods. ;) I guess that begs the question "popular with who? There are restaurants that specialize in both mountain oysters and hor d'oeuvres made of raw hamburger...so clearly they are popular with some. And at least one US coldcuts manufacturer sells pre packaged souse...And insects ARE popular foods in other parts of the world So, I guess it's a matter of how small your world is in defining "popular" GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 12:31 PM Who the hell in their right mind would ever eat raw hamburger???:confused: You won't get any argument from me on that. I was totally grossed out to discover that there were "raw bars" that included little balls of fresh ground beef rolled in spices and eaten as hor d'oeuvres. Supposedly quite popular in New York City starting in the 1970s. I have no idea if they are still there. Supposedly a "one upsmanship" opportunity for people who prefer their steaks rare. Proving their primitive instincts.... :barf: GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 12:34 PM Look up "Steak Tartare"...or "Cannibal sandwich" if you doubt me. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 12:39 PM Those aren't POPULAR foods. ;) Almost forgot, we've got people here who routinely fish the open sewers we call rivers, for carp that they keep and take home with them. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 12:59 PM I did not like the taste of coffee when I was younger, but always liked the smell.. I am a coffee phreak, and in fact hate Keurig machines because I cannot 'spike the ball' with prepackaged cups...I usually employ 12-14 tablespoons of drip-grind for a 10 cup pot. But, regarding the smell. Have you ever smelled "green" coffee beans, fresh off the boat? Back when I worked the warehouse game in Oakland you'd find these coffee importers who brought in the beans still in husks (massive bulk) And they'd have these old decrepit warehouses that were obsolete for pretty much everything else, where they spread these green coffee beans out on the cement floor for drying, prior to being sent to a roaster. And man, the smell was horrid. You'd smell these operations a block away, and it was more pungent and unpleasant than a sewage treatment plant on a hot summer day. The claim was, that once a building had been used to dry coffee a few years, that you could never use it to store any food item afterwards, because the residual smell would taint anything else you tried to store in there GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 01:05 PM I have lived in New York all my life and I never knew or even heard of anyone eating raw hamburger. I just can't get past the smell or the looks of them. I can eat something that's been cooked with an egg if the egg isn't visible. I'm the same way about mayonnaise. If it's mixed in another sauce and I don't know about it, I'm ok. If it's straight up nauseating mayo; forget about it. puke: Wawwie 11-19-2021, 01:37 PM Well see? we have something in common there. I get grossed out even finding my hamburger at Wendy's is a little pink inside. Happens a lot, unfortunately Any amount of pink in a hamburger disgusts me. I've been a vegetarian for a few years now but when I did eat meat, I liked pink in the middle of steak like a ribeye or a t-bone, but never hamburger. It's unhealthy to eat a pink hamburger. I don't even miss eating meat. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 01:44 PM I'm a huge hypocrite when it comes to meat. If I had to kill an animal to survive, I'd probably starve. I'd be the cattle rancher who gave names to all his cattle, and then couldn't face parting with them. But I love steaks, and I love bacon. I'm not sure life would be worth living without bacon. So long as it's drained of blood, and shrinkwrapped on a styrofoam plate when I first see it, then I can eat it. shotzette 11-19-2021, 01:56 PM I'm a huge hypocrite when it comes to meat. Although I do love my steaks and lamb extra rare, and pork chops medium rare. I have to have burgers medium, though. I'm way too concerned about e coli to do it any other way. Great, now I'm hungry. I'd be the cattle rancher who gave names to all his cattle, and then couldn't face parting with them. Back when I ate meat, I was the same way, a hypocrite just as you described. Now I don't eat meat at all, and don't miss it at all. I gave it up for two reasons. Firstly because of animals and secondly because I had very high cholesterol and didn't want to consume any more artery clogging meats. I also quit smoking around the same time. Still after a few years, I do miss cigarettes a little, but I never miss meat. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 02:14 PM I used to be a rabid pro-hunting advocate....proudly defending my position at the top of the food chain yada yada. By all rights, I SHOULD be a vegetarian. That aligns better with my professed perspective. But man,..I'm addicted to meat. My one consolation is that the hypocrisy should be over within another 10 years. By all rights, I SHOULD be a vegetarian. That aligns better with my professed perspective. But man,..I'm addicted to meat. My one consolation is that the hypocrisy should be over within another 10 years. I HATE hunting and always have. I think it is sick, evil, inhumane and very unnecessary. This isn't 1875 when hunting was necessary to survive. I too hate fishing. Sometimes when I go to the beach in Suffolk County, I see deer lurking nearby. They are so beautiful and innocent. I don't know how anyone could get a thrill of any kind by shooting them dead. Sick, evil and unnecessary. I could never, ever go back to eating meat. It would make me very sad and miserable thinking about the innocent animals that died for nothing. It's not hard at all to be a vegetarian. BTW, why do you say that the hypocrisy should be over in another ten years? GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 03:12 PM BTW, why do you say that the hypocrisy should be over in another ten years? I'm 64, obese, had have noticed my decline in heath has gained momentum the last 3 or so years. I felt like a kid until about 58, but from that point on ..stairways started feeling steeper, and parking way out on the perimeter of large parking lots started becoming a nuisance, stuff like that. I'm not looking forward to death, but being realistic I have to think that 10 years is an optimistic out look. Dad died of a heart attack at 43, his dad at 55, my mom;s dad at 60. So, I'm already "exceeding the curve" one might say. And, qualify all of the above, I have never known anyone older than 80 who did not have significant health impediments....living into my 80s looks like a recipe for suffering. The claim was, that once a building had been used to dry coffee a few years, that you could never use it to store any food item afterwards, because the residual smell would taint anything else you tried to store in there I had no idea. That sounds pretty gross. My grandparents grew a little coffee tree on their front porch for quite a few years. I do remember them harvesting the beans, but I don't recall what all that entailed. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 05:58 PM That sounds pretty gross. The smell, for lack of a better descriptor, if you've ever a a bait box full of nightcrawlers that they have all died, and mix that smell with hot roof tar.....pretty close to that. And it's a pervasive smell, gets into every nook and cranny. You know how you never smell "just a little" dead skunk? Once it's in the air, then it's everywhere? It's like that,. I was a warehouse landlord, and the way I became familiar with it was having others in the industry caution me that I never wanted a coffee broker as a tenant in one of my buildings. According to industry scuttlebutt ( not personally verified) but all the hype you hear about a premium coffee having special qualities due to it's origin.....is almost always marketing hype. Most of it enters the country in the same bulk shipments, and the "special qualities" that are marketed ("Supremo" blends, etc) are derived mostly from special treatment during the roasting process.. Never had the opportunity to verify that, but saw A LOT of coffee going through brokerages, and there really was no effort to segregate the beans other than how long a particular batch had been spread out drying. So I have no reason to doubt the claim. RetroGuy2000 11-19-2021, 06:27 PM I'm 64, obese, had have noticed my decline in heath has gained momentum the last 3 or so years. Jim, I'm sorry to hear all this. I wish you much luck with your health. I'm also a meat hypocrite. Love bacon, love steak. And yet, like you, I could never do what it takes to make meat "happen". When I was about ten, my dad took me hunting with his friend. But I lost my boots in the thick mud, and we had to go home. So I never learned that killer instinct hunters acquire, and I'm kind of glad. I'm a big animal lover. And still a hypocrite. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 07:45 PM Jim, I'm sorry to hear all this. I wish you much luck with your health. Seriously, don't be concerned. Ultimately it's an aspect of life we all must make peace with. I've made mine. Seriously, I've never known anyone over 80 who was not physically compromised in ways that I see as unsuitable. So 10 +/- more year feels about right The silver lining for me was that I retired the first time at 46, and enjoyed 6 good years of healthy retirement when I was still young enough to make something of it. In retrospect, it was the single smartest decision that I ever made. GentlemanJim 11-19-2021, 08:23 PM Not to forget, I can't even begin to tell you how many times over the past 3 decades of debating lightning rod social issues on the internet, my ideological opponents have lamented to each other "forget it, he's not going to change, thinking like his is just going to have to die-out" like the dinosaurs. And you know what? They were right! So my eventual passing is more akin to the fulfilling of a destiny, than anything else.
