I don't remember him changing the oil or any other basic work.

No, even at the old house, when Ward did more chores, I don't remember him working on the car. The boys, yes, waxing it.

Chores I remember Ward doing are fixing an electric cord a few times, plumbing at the kitchen sink, maybe the cellar light, and trying but failing to repair a kitchen cabinet door at the 2nd house.

If Ward was raised on a farm he learned some engine repair from his father. When Wally and he shopped for Wally's used car he had quite a bit of automotive knowledge.

Ward did have a Tow Chain with his name on it ... (Lumpy's Rear End got ripped out by it)

Maybe when Ward got a decent job auto repair was off the schedule ?

I recall Ward mentioning the car was at the shop to "get greased" in one episode.

I got the impression Ward made upper middle class dough where he wasn't wildly rich. But, prosperous enough that he didn't have to be a grease monkey. If he ever did work on a car though and got loaded with grease June would make his greasy work clothes look brand spanking new with the miracle of tv.

I grew up in the 1960's and Ward reminds me of my dad. My dad was an accountant and he never worked on the car. He always took in to a mechanic. He never repaired broken stuff around the house either.
