View Full Version : Who remembers “Charlie & Company”? DJM77 10-30-2021, 03:38 PM I remember it. I used to play with a tape recorder a lot when I was a kid. Many years later I went through the old tapes and one of them had an 8 year old me saying that I liked Charlie & Co. TMC 11-01-2021, 12:20 AM That was intended (https://reelrundown.com/tv/Black-Sitcoms-that-Came-and-Went) to be CBS' (https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1985/09/18/vigilante-with-verve/4d1f8e71-ee65-46b4-a9cf-0af5c7141bf7/) answer to The Cosby Show (http://thelandofwhatever.blogspot.com/2016/07/what-mightve-been-charlie-company-1985.html) but it only lasted for a single season. I remember that on an episode (https://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/2014/03/documentary_to_spotlight_jerse.html) of TV One's Unsung Hollywood (https://tvandmusicnetwork.com/hollywood-flip-wilson-premieres-march/) about Flip Wilson (https://tvone.tv/flip-wilson/#:~:text=Flip%20Wilson&text=%22Unsung%20Hollywood%22%20comedian%20and%20actor,with%20audiences%20of%20all%20races.), Flip's son was interviewed. And he said that his dad often clashed with the writing staff because he felt that what they were writing wasn't an authentic enough of a portrayal of an American black family. Again, I don't know for sure if that's why the show failed (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088492/reviews?ref_=tttr_ql_op_3), but it does give you some insight that it was going to be an uphill battle in trying to make the show a success. Had the series been successful, it would have brought Wilson back into the national spotlight. However, he seemed content to keep a low profile after his variety show ended in 1974, but that’s another story. Fallon97 09-14-2022, 03:35 PM I loved this show. I always thought it was unfairly cancelled. |
