Michael Schur is turning 46 today. He became interested in comedy when he read a book of essays by Woody Allen as a boy. Schur studied English at Harvard, and began writing for Saturday Night Live after he graduated.

Schur won his first Emmy as a writer for SNL in 2002. He also began producing the show’s “Weekend Update” segments in 2001. In 2005, he became a producer and writer for The Office, and also appeared on the show as the recurring character of Mose Schrute. In 2006, he shared the show’s Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.

While with the latter series, Schur and Office showrunner Greg Daniels began developing a new series. Parks and Recreation made its debut on NBC in the spring of 2009, and ran for seven seasons. During that time, it received 14 Emmy nominations.

In 2013, Schur and Parks and Rec writer Dan Goor created the police procedural comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. it ran for eight seasons, first on Fox and then on NBC beginning in 2018. Schur has also been the creator of The Good Place, which ran for 4 seasons on NBC beginning in 2016, and is an executive producer of Netflix’s Master of None.

Most recently, Schur is the co-creator of Rutherford Falls, which began airing on Peacock earlier this year and is already renewed for a second season. He is also an executive producer of HBO Max’s Hacks.
