TMC 07-23-2022, 05:00 AM I heard that in Bill Cosby's old stand-up, he jokes about how there's always one kid in a large family who gets picked on. So one has to assume that's where the idea of Vanessa came from. However in practice, it was pretty harsh, mostly because Phylicia Rashad, depending on your point of view, was so cold and awful as a mother. What I mean is that there were many times when Vanessa did something that on any other sitcom would have resulted in punishment but hugs and understanding. But on The Cosby Show her mom, Clair would call her "a little wench" or scream into her face. Maybe in Clair's mind, her singling out Vanessa, was probably meant to be a form of tough love. Vanessa admittedly, could be overdramatic and whiny, so perhaps, Clair wanted to toughen her out for the real world. In the episode “A Night with the Wretched,” Vanessa lies about staying at a friend’s house, then sneaks all the way to Baltimore to see a wild rock band called The Wretched—because apparently teenage logic says no rules apply once you cross state lines. But of course… everything goes left. The girls miss their ride back, get stranded, and end up calling home—basically handing Cliff Huxtable and Clair Huxtable a front-row ticket to their own disappointment tour. No yelling, no whooping… just that calm, deadly Huxtable parenting that hits way harder than any punishment. This episode is really about consequences—because it wasn’t even the concert, it was the lying. Vanessa learned the hard way that freedom comes with responsibility… and Cliff Huxtable will always find out. |
