View Full Version : Your Fave Character Leaving a Series
baronzzz 07-19-2002, 02:52 AM Sometimes a character (major or minor) leaves a series and you just lose interest in the series. Wonder how many times this has happened to you.
Some of the characters that have left and I became disinterested in the show:
1. Chrissy on Three's Company
2. Vivian Bagley on The Lucy Show
3. Shirley! on Laverne and Shirley
4. Kate on Petticoat Junction
5. Lowell in Wings
6. Sandra Clark (wonderful Jackee) in 227
GoldenFamilyTies 07-19-2002, 04:00 AM Denise on The Cosby Show
Barney on TAGS
Will and Grace Fanatic 07-19-2002, 02:21 PM When Suzanne left Threes Company I lost a interest a little.
When Lecy left Roseanne I didn't lose interest in the show, how could I, But it wasn't the same without her. But Roseanne was still a pretty funny show without Lecy.
Brian Damage 07-19-2002, 06:53 PM When Jeff Conaway left Taxi, the show lost a lot of chemistry.
Impressions 07-19-2002, 06:59 PM Diane Chambers from Cheers, she was such a good actress, Why did she have to leave!
Mrs. Garrett!! The Facts of Life wouldn't be the same with out her, she taught us them!
Sara Micelli 07-19-2002, 08:58 PM Classis is Better I agree with you about Diane Chambers she was my favorite character and I am sad that she left. I also agree with you about Mrs. Garrett.

Cindy Williams; LaVerne and Shirley
John Travolta; Welcome Back Kotter
To me these were the worse exits and completely ruined a good series!:(
James 07-20-2002, 10:00 PM Here are some of mine:
John Ritter (The Rev. Matthew Fordwick), Michael Learned (Olivia Walton) and Ralph Waite (John Walton) on The Waltons
Olivia d'Abo (Karen Arnold) on The Wonder Years (granted, I still watched it and probably still would have had Fred Savage aka Kevin left)
Shawn Harrison (Waldo Geraldo Faldo) and Jo Marie Payton (Harriette Winslow) on Family Matters
britt britt 07-26-2002, 03:53 PM Shirley! on Laverne and Shirley!!!

2. Suzanne Somers - Three's Company
3. Don Knotts - The Andy Griffith Show

6. Valerie Harper - The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Marvo301 07-27-2002, 08:06 PM Ron Howard and Donny Most - Happy Days

Also I have been hearing this is Sarah Michelle Gellars last season on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. :crying: Aparently they will redo the show with a new slayer for season 8. :(
If that is true about SMG, they might as well get rid of the show. It just won't last that long with a new slayer.
I wouldn't say I lost interested in this shows, I just really missed these characters
Denise Huxdible - twice , Cosby Show, Different World
Diane Chambers - Cheers
Richie Cunningham - Happy Days
Mike and Gloria Stivic - All in the Family
Kirk Devaine - Newhart
AlexPKeatonFanboy 09-06-2002, 03:00 PM Charlotte Rae - The Facts of Life
Suzanne Somers - Three's Company
Cindy Williams - Laverne & Shirley
Shelly Long- Cheers
Michael J Fox - Spin City
dlemond 09-06-2002, 03:58 PM I think when these characters left, the shows were not as good, though some were still good (Cheers for instance).
Others just started started to suck.
Vinnie - Welcome Back Kotter
Richie & Ralph - Happy Days
Shirley - Laverne and Shirley
Diane - Cheers
Chrissy - 3's Company
Trapper - MASH
Julie - The Love Boat
Flo - Alice
Steve - Married with Children
Randy - Home Improvement
Sitcomwriter 09-06-2002, 08:36 PM About Buffy I've heard averal RUMORS:
*Buffy will go the "Mary Hartman" route by making the show about the town rather than Bufy herself.
*The show will focus on Dawn or another new slayer.
*Angel will return and the show will focus on him.
*SMG has signed on until season 9.
What one is true? Me I've got no clue....
AlexPKeatonFanboy 09-07-2002, 12:23 PM Almost forgot when Edith left All in the Family and when Gina left Martin.....
Adamantium 09-14-2002, 10:26 AM Lowell Mather- I still watched 'Wings' but didn't like it as much.
Bill McNeal-Although he died and not actually quit, when Phil Hartman was no longer on 'NewsRadio' a lot left the show.
Chico Rodriguez-'Chico and the Man' as never the same after his death.
:(

I agree. I love both shows, but after Lowell and Bill left, the shows just didn't seem the same.

Superbatboy 09-14-2002, 05:14 PM Rhoda-Mary Tyler Moore
Kim-Moesha
Denise-The Cosby Show
Rachel-Family Matters
Dan-Roseanne (Season 9 was only a recurring character)
Mr. Shy Guy 09-14-2002, 05:54 PM Chrissy - Three's Company
Mrs. Garrett - Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life
Mike and Gloria - All in the Family
There's probaly more that I can't think of.
The Love Boat really lost all the charm it once had when Lauren Tewes got fired, and Fred Grandy decided to move on with his life, and pursue other interests--which was completely understandable.
The show should have been cancelled before they hired the mermaids and Ted McGinley. I didn't mind Patricia Klous (Judy McCoy) as much as the other changes that the show made in its last years. But those mermaids were horrible... :p
dlemond 09-16-2002, 01:08 PM I think I can speak for most people with taste that the world would have been better off if Ted McGinley had pursued any other career than acting.
AdiTheGame 09-16-2002, 02:35 PM Chrissy on Three's Comapny
Lowell on Wings
But most of all--- Diane on Cheers, although I liked Rebecca more, she still was my fav character to leave.

LOL...he has his own spot on JumpTheShark.com!
Anyways...Duh, DEF. Ron Howard on Happy Days. He was THE star of the show...same with Donny Most- anything post 1980-ICK. Cindy Williams on L&S def. Randy on Home Improvement!! Someone said that! lol..I had the BIGGEST crush on him! Don Knotts on Andy Griffith. Suzanne Somers on 3's Company-although I still watched it and still enjoyed it, but the magic was just gone.
Cactus Jack 09-17-2002, 07:17 AM Agreed also when Anson Williams left in 1983 and Donny Most left in 1980, there's no more....
Ralph and Potsie from Happy Days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cactus Jack 09-17-2002, 07:17 AM Also Richie too!!
buddy love 09-17-2002, 09:02 AM I think the overall quality of the Andy Griffith Show dropped when Don Knotts left. The show went on another three years, but it wasn't quite as funny and Andy seemed to grow dull without Barney. The best episodes from those last seasons were when Barney returned for guest appearances (in five episodes) and ended up winning three emmys.
I also missed Ron Howard when Richie left Happy Days. Yes in some ways he was only star in billing only since Henry Winkler pretty much dominated most episodes. But the chemistry between Winkler and Howard was missed after Ron left and the show wasn't quite the same.
Finally when the original Darrin, Dick York, left Bewitched due to chronic back problems. I think York was more aninmated in this role than his replacement.
oops I have one more finally, when Valerie Harper left for her own show, Rhoda. MTM started to focus more on the workplace and less on her home life. Mary needed a best friend and Rhoda was perfect--she was the anti-Mary and there chemistry was excellent. Sure Georgette was seen as an occassional gal pal, but it wasn't the same--you get the feeling that Mary had no friends besides the people she worked with.
