Walgreens has a grocery section, so after all the riff raff steals Walgreens blind, and Walgreens responds by closing the stores in the most vulnerable areas.

THEN that political subgroup for whom guilt peddling is their stock in trade, will start bawling about the blighted neighborhoods left in the wake of the closures.

When there is a "disadvantaged" neighborhood that has no stores that sell food, it's called a "food desert". There is actually a federal agency that compiles maps of metro areas all across the country, depicting "food deserts".

And those guilt peddling bawl babies mentioned earlier just love bawling about "food deserts" being a proof of systemic bias.

~Wealthy people don't care if poor children starve~ is usually the mantra.

They refuse to acknowledge that the vacant stores are the result of merchants despair over looting and other forms of theft.

So, by closing stores in disadvantaged neighborhoods, Walgreens will be putting their heads in this barrel. It's only a matter of time.

Well, let's be honest. Not all store closures are caused by looting and theft. Historically, many local grocery store closures were caused by USDA policies which caused black farmers to cease farming (https://uncpress.org/book/9781469622071/dispossession/).

I like Walgreens and hope they're able to find a good security solution. I know when visiting Vegas back in the Bush II administration, I was surprised to see a ton of store security. Mass theft was nothing new to them.

I dont blame anyone for doing anything..... The world is a piece of garbage....... All the ones doing it are wide awake and tired of it!

On closures, I just saw a slideshow on major stores closing in 2021, granted some were in trouble before covid Lockdowns, but the lockdowns pushed them over.

Some mentioned: Bed,Bath,Beyond, The Gap, Banana Republic, Goodwill, some Kroger stores, JC Penney, Express, Bloomingdales, Macys, Starbucks, Disney stores and many more, 26 were in the slideshow.

Walgreens prices were always a bit on the high side, to the point that I often regretted buying things there only to see what other retailers sold the exact same items for. But they had kind of a "one stop" niche where people could go to buy a wide variety of items, and get their prescriptions filled at the same time.

I used to love going there on a rainy afternoon, and spending a couple hours shopping for things that I didn't even know that I needed.
AND if you can discipline yourself to buy only the items that are on sale, you can get out of it without too much damage.

But they count on your buying intentionally overpriced items during the same visit. That's really their bread and butter.

One other thing worth mentioning, lots of companies are using the pandemic as an excuse to close under performing franchise locations, and to terminate services that were otherwise problematic.

4 Subway sandwich shops have closed locally in the past year, after limping along for over a decade...and McDonalds has stopped their all day breakfasts, which I really miss.

I don't know for a fact that the Walgreens closure are pandemic related, but it would not shock me if the locations being shuttered were under performing.

I know in my area, they cannot find help. One of Walgreens near by is closing the pharmacy section on weekends. On another note, I saw on tv an ad for Rite Aid which puzzles me, for I thought they were bought out by Walgreens.

I know several Walgreens have closed around here. Some were taken over by Dollar Tree.
