View Full Version : Do You Allow Guests to Smoke in Your Home?

I'm mainly talking about pre-Covid times...

My mother hates cigarette smoke, but she always provided ashtrays for her smoking guests when they visited. She felt that she had to "grin and bear it" for an evening to satisfy them. Some of the guests who knew she didn't like the smell would step outside to smoke.

I haven't felt right lighting up in someone else's home, especially if they aren't smokers. Even if the person smokes I always ask if it's cool to light up in their home.

I don't know a soul in my life who smokes. And if I did, NO.

The last person I knew was my son in law and he picked up first cig at 10 and when his kids were born and he was a father wanting to instill good habits in his children, he would hide his beer can and go outside to puff....he lost his life's battle at 55, lung cancer, he lasted 6 months when he finally went to his doc.

Nope, definitely not inside my house. I ask them (politely) to smoke outside.

My reasons: I am just afraid if I allowed someone to smoke inside my house I MIGHT have the sudden urge to want to smoke again (former cigarette smoker for 25 years; quit eleven years ago).

*I have terrible will power ;)*

Interesting Theda and your "terrible will power", I didn''t expect that from you, you come across pretty strong.

I can't stand being around someone who is smoking, so no.

No. The smell permeates into and onto everything.

Even when I smoked years ago I'd go outside or smoke at work.

If you don't smoke, and someone wants to smoke inside your home, I question if they are truly your friend. I've been a smoker, a reformed smoker, and a "returned to" smoker. And never wanted to impose my habit onto others.

Now, I occasionally enjoy a good cigar. The bigger and blacker (maduro) the better. And, I usually enjoy one out in the park when sitting on a bench. And I gleefully use them to keep little annoying brats away.

I'll be there enjoying my afternoon and a family will come walking down the bike path, and I'll give the stogie a good few puffs, and that's all it takes for one of the parents to Tell the little rug rats to stay out of harm's way.

Right now...I rent, and my place is a smoke-free zone. This is a circumstance beyond my control!

I smoke cigars, never got into cigarettes. I’ve been smoking a lot more than I usually have now in the pandemic era. Maduros are too dark for me as I like them a little bit lighter like Connecticut wrap.

Some people I know can’t stand cigarette smoke, but do not mind being around cigar or pipe tobacco. One time a neighbor came to my door with some food and she said that I smelled really good and what aftershave it was. I laughed and said it was pipe tobacco.

I don't smoke, and no-one has ever smoked in my home. I did recently visit my cousin who smokes (visiting her after the death of another cousin), and while her house was very clean, the smoke smell just permeated the house. I could even smell it in the guest bathroom on the upper floor, where no-one even smokes.

Nearly all of my friends and relatives have given up smoking by now. The cost, health issues, and standing outside in the elements gradually convinced most of them to give up the habit.

Thank You:)

Unfortunately, I used to love to smoke (I know, gross!).

But I came to my senses (after smoking for nearly 25 years) and I am proud to say it has been over eleven years since I quit this bad habit.

Thankfully, I do not know anyone who smokes anymore, so the temptation is not there.

I've heard over many years that smoking is the hardest habit to kick. But it can be done just like all bad habits. But nicotine??? I have a long time friend and I remember the night she finally quit, it was a new year's eve many yrs ago and she came from a family who ALL smoked and she was born in Bakersfield, the most polluted place in CA, she is challenged with asthma and Emphysema, and now dealing with some cancers. None of my family smoked.

To be honest , we really don't have many friends or family that smoke ! The couple of people we know who do automatically just go outside on the porch when they want to smoke without us even saying anything ! ;)

I don't allow it although I am an ex-smoker. I am ashamed to say that my kids were raised in a smoky home but suffered no ill effects. My daughter and a sister smokes but they go outside.

No smoking in the house. My son smokes and he does it on the patio or the front porch, it's the same for guests. When we took down pictures at my late mother-in-laws, where the pictures were hung was white and the rest of the walls were yellowed from cigarette smoke plus you could smell it even after we cleaned her house.

I don't believe that most people smoke indoors these days.
But I can't stand the smell even outdoors. :X)

I go for a yearly physical and recently went back in June. When the nurse asked me questions for my medical records, one of the questions is “Do you smoke cigarettes?” I don’t so my answer is “no”.

I’ve commented that this question needs to be changed as it specifically mentions cigarettes, not smoking in general. Many other types of smoking out there like cigars, pipes, vaping, hookah, weed…

Nurse told me it’s been years since these questions were updated.

Not a flipping chance. Don’t have the nerve to ask in my home. LOL.
