I think it was too expensive at the time for my HH:lol:

I remember it but I didn't have a need to purchase it so I never used it.

I think it was part of my 1998 VCR, which still works. Apart from VCR+, I can't believe they programmed 20+ years into its calendar.

Let me check the TV Guide for the plus codes and I'll see if it works LOL

You are correct, I have a Panasonic VCR with VCR Plus built into it, but I never used that feature.

I have never used it, either. I think mine is also a Panasonic--it's been very reliable.

My parents bought one when I was a teenager. I'm almost certain it's still in a stored box in the basement. I know at the time it was awesome to program in a few #s instead of setting times and channels.

The Panasonic VCR I have with the VCR Plus is model number PV-9662. Is yours the same?

True, the 9662 model is probably a slight upgrade over the 8662.

The 9662 model I have is still a working, reliable VCR, every so often I run the head cleaning tape in it to keep the heads clean but that's the only maintenance I do.

9662 is a four head VCR. How many heads does your 8662 have?

Yes, mine still works fine. I might still have a 4 head VCR sitting on a shelf, but I think it's a JVC. It's not nearly as good a VCR as the Panasonic.

My 2005 DVD recorder is also a Panasonic and it still works, too.

Of course, both their tuners are obsolete, but I can still record from the cable boxes.

I like four head VCR's because they produce a sharp looking picture. As far as electronics goes, Panasonic seems to have made some pretty good products. I have two more Panasonic VCR's, still sealed and unopened, these are replacement VCR's in the event I ever need them. I don't know if either one has four heads but I guess I'll find out if or whenever I put them into use.

I looked at the boxes and both VCR's have four heads so that's good to know. The one VCR is model number 4611 and the other is model number 4612. I bought these about 20 years ago if I remember correctly.

I had a VCR+ but with current technology, I took all my unused VCR's to the landfill. Sad but another part of my past gone. Another part of life is photo albums. You took a photo and developed it and you would put it in album. Now you take a photo on a iPhone tablet and it just sits.

I use VCR's these days for viewing VHS cassettes, and also for dubbing VHS cassettes on to DVD's. The four head VCR's are nice because they produce a sharper looking picture and the DVD's turn out sharp looking as well.

That's true and I've been thinking about that. Hopefully these VCR's I have aren't going bad by sitting unused inside their boxes after 20 years. I guess I will find out if or whenever I need to use one and will see what happens.

I always worry for people purchasing "new" ones on eBay for lots of money.

They still make fresh players for cassettes and sell blank VHS tapes, so I'm really surprised that a legitimate company hasn't stepped up and started manufacturing new VCRs.

As for VCR Plus, my main memory seems to be of their codes littering TV Guide. :lol: It took me forever to get used to them being added to the listings.

Even though every issue page one of the listings explained what they were, I bet a lot of readers never understood what all those dang numbers clogging up the listings were.

I honestly never even noticed them. Part of that time was beyond when you'd buy a print TV Guide, and was probably long enough ago that the TV Guide was that awful thing on cable crawled that up or down the screen. If you missed what you wanted, you'd have to wait five minutes for it to come back around. But then there were still the newspaper TV listings which probably had them.

VCR Plus continued to be used well into 2009. I do the Honeymooners TV Schedules and I remembered doing the schedules for the Honeymooners marathons ringing in 2009on WPIX and the future Newsnation channel and I distinctly remember seeing them. I think by 2010, they went the way of the dodo.

Yeah, I had checked EBay, and the VCR pluses were selling for the same price as the Amazon one, around 10 bucks. Not horrible if someone wanted to pick one up, for whatever nostalgic purpose.
