In the episode The Investigation, Micheal send a letter a to Cuba for a school project requesting a pamphlet about Cuba revolution, so he could compare it with American revolution.

Apparently FBI saw this corespondent between Evans and Cuba and start investigating by snooping around Evan's neighbors and James employer.

I think FBI action and snooping around was exacerbated in this episode. There must have been thousand of letters that get send to Cuba and vice versa everyday, and there is no way FBI can investigate each letter that was send and received. Not enough man power or resources.

If Micheal have kept sending letters and become a pen pal with a Cuban official, then FBI might look into it to see if any illegal activity is going on. But I doubt it if they go around asking question just by one exchanged letter.

Is this the same episode where Michael keeps asking about Medgar Evers? I remember the FBI guys being all tongue tied and evasive. That was obviously played for politics. In reality, they’d not be intimidated by a child asking such.

No the medgar evers question was in the same season but earlier in the season in the ep called Cleatus

During the Cold War this is not an exaggerated plot. Writing letters to communist leaders did catch the attention of US Officials. I agree its stupid but the script is not that far out for the FBI to come and ask questions.
The FBI tapped the phones of Martin Luther King, etc. They saw social justice as a threat to democracy. Cuba in the 60s and 70s promoted a social justice utopia which was total B.S. but just putting the show in perspective.

One thing for sure about that episode was that they showed FBI in bad light and as bad guys. By snooping around they made neighbors suspicious of Evans family, and by talking to James employer they made him lose his job.

Even at end of that episode, James was telling Florida that although he was cleared, he had a feeling that somebody have his name in government file. So the big brother is watching everybody.

I watched the episode last night and was weird how Florida didnt know automatically that the cuba book belonged to Michael when JJ and Thelma said it wasnt theirs. lol

I also watch that episode last night and forgot how funny that episode is. Micheal was usually offensive when it comes to politics and race, but he was very defensive in that episode and even little bit scared. I guess he found out that world is not as black&white as he thought.
