View Full Version : Jo/Blair, Nat/Toot---what about mix-ups??

Hey y'all, of course we know about all the fights and tension between Jo and Blair, and Natalie and Tootie (okay, N&T were best friends, but they still had fights now and then), but what about other possibilities?

I always wondered why the writers didn't delve more into other character conflicts. For example, are there any fights between:

Jo and Tootie-----(the only thing I know of is Jo furious at Tootie for not makin' scarfs for the Scholarship Fair, but that's one-sided---Tootie's not mad at Jo)

Blair and Natalie-----(the only fight I know of is where Blair reads Natalie's diary.....but I remember in a later season Blair stole an idea of Nat's and used it on TV, for some politician thing?)

Blair and Tootie-----I don't know of any fights between these two.

Jo and Natalie-----ditto.

I haven't seen every episode, but would love to know if some of those potential matches ever had real conflict scenes on the show. And if not, I wonder why not...I like to explore all kinds of things with characters! :)

I have wondered about that too.

In the episode where Blair's mother finds out she has breast cancer, Tootie somehow finds out as well and Blair gets mad accusing Tootie she will gossip the secret around campus.

I'll attempt to think of more. Jo and Natalie got along pretty well though. They seemed to be cool with each other.

Except for "Green Eyed Monster" when Jo goes "Cool it, Nat! Nice girls don't throw trees!"

Except New Girl 1. Jo didn't exactly like the idea of Nat asking her out.

Blair blew up at Tootie a few times in season one. Even offered to be her 'white maid.'

Yeah, some interesting points here...but are there any two-sided fights? That's what I'd really like to see between these "rare pairings"...

Wow---Blair and Tootie had a pretty tense scene in "A Friend In Need" part I today!

When Tootie comes downstairs into the kitchen and it's obvious that she knows what's wrong with Blair's mom---really good moment there between those two. Not technically a "fight", but it was some pretty good intense moments...

I always kind of got the impression that Jo looked out for Natalie, and Blair kind of looked out for Tootie. But that's just my opinion.

I cant really remember any times that there were any two-sided fights between Jo and Nat or between Blair and Tootie, though!

Yeah, I really wish the writers had explored that---I mean, when ya live together for 8 years, you're bound to fight!

In "Sweet Sorrow" today, it was cool to see Tootie and Jo have sort of a fight scene in the bedroom. They probably woulda really gotten into it if Blair and Natalie hadn't kept tryin' to intervene, lol.

One thing that I've noticed about these 4-lady shows (FOL, Designing Women and Golden Girls) is that there are four distinct personalities.

The brain -- Natalie, Julia and Dorothy

The sexpot -- Blair, Suzanne and Blanche

The naive one -- Tootie, Charlene and Rose

The experienced one -- Jo, Mary Jo (heh) and Sophia

There is something about these characters that makes the show. None of us would probably be on this board if there were four different "Blair" types on FOL. It the combinations between them.

Many times producers want people to pair off... they don't want a character to be isolated for anything. Rarely do you see one specific character continuously doing their own thing. Even if they aren't regularly paired, they always go back to one another.

So, I think that this is why there isn't as much between Blair and Tootie, Suzanne and Mary Jo and Blanche and Sophia. Of course there is interaction, but eventually Blair goes with Jo, Suzanne with Julia and Dorothy with Sophia. It makes the characters have a place.

This is just a random observation... comment how you like...

PS -- I think I've posted something like this before, but I'm not sure exactly when or what board. So, we'll just do it new... :)

nice observation...I was gonna say, "WAIT A MINUTE!!" lol...because I was thinking there WAS some kind of thing between Blanche and Sophia, but, you're right...there's INTERACTION just not fights like there are between Sophia/Dorothy orrrrrr...Jo/Blair...I associate those two "pairs" with the 80's.....maybe it's just me...

Actually I started a thread like this in Chit Chat (which then got moved to "General Sitcom Questions and Discussion), but I had a difference.

I put Jo with Julia and Dorothy, and Natalie with Mary Jo and Sophia.

Cause to me, Jo/Julia/Dorothy are the "straight men", kinda the boss, and the ones who don't take any nonsense.

And I have Natalie with Mary Jo and Sophia cause they're the "funny" ones---the sarcastic ones who get lots of one-liners and such, and who the general public considers to be "the funny one".

I can see your point there too. There can be lots of different classifications for the characters. Mine are just four generalizations, but you can do different things as well...

Good Call!!!  :notworthy

I just seen that episode, and Jo almost KILLED Tootie!

Plus we can't forget that scene in Teacher's Pet where Tootie confronts Jo on coming home late (again) and when Tootie was being too persistent Jo gets kinda angry at her back.

In "What Price Glory" where Tootie became preoccupied with Jeff and started to slack on her work duties, there was a lil back and forth between Jo and Tootie when Jo said that Tootie better have that inventory in when she gets back from her trip.......If Natalie and Mrs. G didn't intervene......
