View Full Version : Mrs. Garrett's weight loss
TALLguyinKY 07-16-2002, 05:40 PM Does anyone else think Mrs. Garrett wasn't as funny after Season 1? I mean, I liked it when she had more weight, cause it made her look a little younger. Once she lost the 25 lbs, it made her look older in the face, and it seemed to kinda limit her expressions.
I mean, I still looooooooove Mrs. Garrett, and she is funny and has some classic moments, but the weight loss just seems to have taken a li'l of the shine away from her.
Anyone else ever think about this?

hmmm...I don't know if it's the 'SHINE' taken away...I mean, I still think she lights up the screen...but, yea she was different...I think it was the different writers...I dunno...maybe I'm too obsessed to see it...
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 07-16-2002, 05:49 PM I don't agree. I think all the weight loss did was make her happier. I think she still glowed and was still as funny as ever!! I think she looked GREAT after 1st season!
Czas na Zywiec 07-16-2002, 06:16 PM I think she was as funny in Season 2. Even dunnier. Remember in New Girl part2 when she was talking to Arnold and walked towards the window where she found teh van was gone? I though she looked so youthful in that outfit! She was even better in Season 2. To me anyways.
TALLguyinKY 07-16-2002, 06:17 PM Yeah, I guess to me it's just her face. More wrinkley and saggy, and lots of eye makeup. lol I love her (heck, she's my 7th favorite sitcom character of all-time), I think it's just gonna take a bit for me to get used to "the new Mrs. G.".
SBTB Geek 07-16-2002, 06:18 PM I only noticed that Mrs. Garrett became more serious on the later seasons.

Not really. To me anyway. I still think she looked good. You wouldn't want her to look Joan Rivers would you? She's aging great. I didn't notice any sagging at all.

No, I don't mean in a real dramatic way, just somethin' ya can notice. Since her face was cubby in Season 1, after the weight loss she just looks a little...um..."deflated" in her cheeks and eyes...
And please no one flame me, I'm not tryin' to be mean, I'm just really observant! :) I do love Mrs. Garrett! :D
Impressions 07-16-2002, 06:33 PM I think Mrs. G looks good always, no matter what she looks like!
iluvjoandnancy4eva 07-16-2002, 07:00 PM I think that Mrs. G was just as funny after she lost weight. Plus I think It made her look better to lose the extra pounds. Good job Charlotte!!

Ditto!
Mr. Stefani 07-16-2002, 09:11 PM I thought she looked younger in season 2 than in 1:lol:
TALLguyinKY 07-16-2002, 09:30 PM Ya know, I hadn't thought about it until now, but she also wasn't the star after Season 1---either it was the girls, or she shared it with 'em, or it was her (dependin' on the episode). Maybe that's part of what's different to me---it's cause maybe she doesn't get the time to be as funny as she did in the first season.
That's when she owned the spotlight! :D

Look at how her part in the show got smaller in the later seasons. To me the show went downhill. She was the focal point and it was like she was no longer needed after the girls grew up and got older.

Yea shje did seem more serious near then end of the show when she was still on it.
valentina warner 02-10-2020, 03:31 PM I think MRS G looked better and younger in all the episodes after season 1!
80s Dude 02-11-2020, 04:38 PM I think Charlotte Rae was trying to loose weight so she had it written into the plots of FOL to have her character also trying to loose weight. Gave her some motivation and a more fun way to do it.
TV Guy 02-12-2020, 09:54 PM The character of Mrs. Garrett was written differently starting with season 2. In her year on Diff’rent Strokes and the first season of FOL, she was sillier and honestly not as smart. When she became the guardian of the four girls, they gave her a more serious side, and she became smarter and more of a mother figure. Previously, she was more like an eccentric aunt.

That's quite an interesting way of putting it and i kind of agree: she became closer to the 4 main girls and had quite a big influence on them. Nevertheless, i don't think she was silly in the season 1 (maybe a bit eccentric) but she still gave the 8 girls good advice

valentina warner 02-13-2020, 04:41 PM 8 girls?
OOps! I meant 7 (JO) wasn't there yet!

It was really never 8. Almost as soon as Jo got there, Molly quited.
