Ray Romano never appeared. He was cast for the pilot episode but was fired shortly after the table read. Greg Lee took over his part for the actual filmed episode (playing handyman Rick) and Joe Rogan took over for him as Joe starting with the second episode.

I think this was the best for everybody. I love Joe Rogan on NewsRadio and obviously Ray Romano went on to greater success with Everybody Loves Raymond.

Lisa Kudrow has a very similar story, getting cast on the pilot of Frasier. She was told they were going in a different direction. It ended up being a good thing for both of them, as they respectively went on to bigger things.
