View Full Version : Why did Peter Engel's other TNBC shows do poorly in syndication
I don't know if "poorly" is the right choice of words, but consider the following:
Hang Time was in ABC Family (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-67414.html)
City Guys was on BET (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-272278.html)
Saved by the Bell: The New Class was on USA Network
California Dreams was on syndication and TBS (https://cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=SBS19970105.1.136&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------1) and WGN (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=59655)
They all must have lasted just one cycle before being pulled. California Dreams in itself, may have been paired alongside Saved by the Bell back to back in the late '90s, and even for a few months CD aired in syndication in 2003.

Hang time, City guys and California dreams each had no single multidiscriminative incident in their own crewmember group parts as both original and new class sitcoms of Saved By The Bell.
Hang Time was a true story about the female athletic buildup, which is good enough, but California Dreams main actress Kelly Packard automatically moved onto Baywatch, while City Guys main actor Wesley Jonathan moved onto What I Like About You and other African-American sitcoms.

California Dreams was a clone of SBTB, except it had more musical performances, since the kids were in a pop band. It ran for five seasons. I wasn't a regular viewer, but it had a good run from 1992-1996.

The entire California Dreams sitcom crewmember group isn't multi-discriminative as the entire original Saved By The Bell sitcom crewmember group, which is considered its own positivity.

I would describe California Dreams as what would happen if you took the Zack Attack band from SBTB and built and entire show out of and around that.

The entire Hang Time crewmember group is never multi-discriminative as the entire original Saved By The Bell crewmember group, which is reasonably positive, Holly.

When California Dreams first started though, I think that it was actually trying to be Beverly Hills, 90210 (with Matt and Jenny Garrison ostensibly being that show's equivalent to Brandon and Brenda Walsh) meets The Partridge Family in that it was really a "family sitcom" with heavy musical elements. It didn't really drop any pretense that it wasn't an out and out Saved by the Bell clone until the Garrisons were gradually phased out and we spent more time in high school come Season 3.
You can argue that Lorena, who first showed up in Season 3 of CD, was that show's equivalent to Lisa Turtle on SBTB in that they were both the most affluent members of their respective gangs. Sly was already arguably, the "Zack Morris of CD" and Tiffani you can argue, was the "Kelly Kawpowski of CD".

Hang Time (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/HangTime) as TV Tropes likes to put it, was a "Quietly Performing Sister Show" (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/QuietlyPerformingSisterShow) to not only Saved by the Bell, but to California Dreams. Hang Time was a show that at the end of the day, was just there and was looked at as a Midwestern, basketball-themed version of SBTB. Besides the numerous casting changes (that also befell other Peter Engel produced TNBC shows like SBTB: The New Class and California Dreams), there was a certain vagueness over whether it was meant to be more of a comedy or a comedy-drama.
TVSCREEN2015 08-09-2022, 04:50 AM All those other TNBC shows were forgettable and didn't stand out. Saved By the Bell was memorable and the only one to leave a lasting impression. Two spins-offs, two tv movies, merchandise, a reboot, successful syndication run.

I don't know if this is a fair enough of an argument but unlike with SBTB, Peter Engel's other teen shows never really had a true breakout star to claim. I mean, with the exception of maybe Lark Voorhees and Dustin Diamond who is now deceased, the main cast still have reasonably high profile and are still working. Even Elizabeth Berkley despite her Showgirls infamy.
I guess, the closest that I can immediately think of in terms of lasting "name recognition" on the other shows are Anthony Anderson and Jay Hernandez from Hang Time. And I suppose, Bianca Lawson, Sarah Lancaster, Lindsey McKeon, and Natalia Cigliuti are probably in that order, the most successful alumnus from Saved by the Bell: The New Class. And even then, I wouldn't necessarily consider any of them out and out "household names".
Otherwise, it appears that many other cast members went back to obscurity after their initial fame ran its course.

Well, TMC, TBH, IMO...:
First of all, whenever you say, "Quietly Performing Sister Show", Hang Time is considered a romantic comedy-drama sitcom type.
Secondly, Hang Time was a based on female basketball, which started in 1895 in real-life, before that started the growth of female athletic back afterwards along the way, such as softball, soccer and lacrosse and etc...
Thirdly, unlike the SBTB: New Class' notorious many cast-changes, Hang Time has its own many cast-changes only on most of its supporting-cast part, nothing else.
Finally, Hang Time should no longer be a forgotten sitcom because it doesn't have any multi-discriminative incident scandals in its crewmember group, unlike the original SBTB class sitcom's crewmember group.

Well, TVSCREEN2015, since they already found out the antisemitism abuse scandal incident in the original SBTB class sitcom's crewmember group, then I'm seriously afraid that the original SBTB class sitcom's memorable condition will get cut down in several parts at a time seriously and later on will be also forgotten, TBH, IMO...
