Francisco Aguirre-Sacasa, 76, served as the Nicaraguan ambassador to the United States from 1997-2000 and later as foreign minister of the Central American country. “My father has had a political career and most recently has been working as a pundit and a journalist covering the state of Nicaragua and its relationships to other countries,” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tells Deadline. “He’s been a vocal critic of the current regime under President Daniel Ortega who is governing with his wife as his vice president. Nicaragua has been in a bad, bad, way.”

Riverdale cast and crew film a video in support of creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's father, who's imprisoned in Nicaragua (https://deadline.com/2021/09/riverdale-cast-support-roberto-aguirre-sacasa-father-treason-charge-nicaragua-1234828636/)

Francisco Aguirre-Sacasa, who's been outspoken in his criticism of Nicaragua regime led by President Daniel Ortega, has been sentenced for treason and conspiracy. Last month, the Riverdale boss pleaded for information on his missing father (https://deadline.com/2021/08/riverdale-roberto-aguirre-sacasa-pleads-for-information-on-missing-father-in-nicaragua-1234810364/). “The good news is that my mom has finally had contact with my dad, after more than a month. She was allowed to see him briefly last week at the El Chipote federal prison in Managua,” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tells Deadline. “The bad news is that two days after that visit, my father was officially charged – for treason and conspiracy, which are completely bogus charges. Other political prisoners have also been charged for various made-up crimes. That means my dad’s no longer ‘uander investigation for 90 days,’ as he had been, and can now be imprisoned indefinitely.”
