MISST3 08-06-2021, 04:20 PM "Little Pitchers have Big Ears", was always said to remind adults that children were listening to their conversations. Bonniegirl 08-06-2021, 06:30 PM If ever I said I was bored, Mom would say " Well you can help me do the cleaning " ! :D Torgo 08-06-2021, 06:42 PM If ever I said I was bored, Mom would say " Well you can help me do the cleaning " ! :D Yep, "If you're bored, I'll give you something to do." TVLegend 08-08-2021, 09:10 PM If we complained that we didn't like the cookies she bought Mom would say " Just be thankful you have cookies, there are starving kids in India that would love these cookies" ! You’re lucky, if I ever had the chance to gets my HANDS on cookies AT ALL, my mom would say “eat it up or get your ass whooped.” Torgo 08-08-2021, 10:04 PM "I pulled you out, I can shove you right back in." Caroline13 08-08-2021, 11:06 PM Wait till your dad gets home. GentlemanJim 08-10-2021, 05:33 PM When I was very young, persistent warnings that "the Boogieman" lurked in the shadows, to keep me from wandering away. If I opened mail, and it was a bill, I would have to pay it. That all of my dead ancestors were watching over me, and would be shamed if I was bad. That the holocaust was God's punishment to the Jews for allowing his son to be murdered (that was my grandmother, actually) That Jehova's witnesses lurked around gas stations, waiting to kidnap children who wandered away from the car. (this tied in to those people who occasionally came to bother us on Sunday mornings) GentlemanJim 08-10-2021, 06:15 PM I also recall from my preteen years, countless hours of my mother on the phone, consoling heartbroken single gals she knew who were having man problems. Even several who would come into our livingroom and spend hours sitting on our couch bawling about the injustices they had suffered. Mom always seemed to have a knack for putting them back on an even keel. Once in my early 20's after suffering a particularly painful separation, I thought "oh goody, at least I know an expert I can fall back upon for damage control" Nothing doing! Her immediate reply was "Go put a quarter in any jukebox, and you'll see you're not alone" LOL, that was her standard reply any subsequent time I tried to find a shoulder to cry on, as well, so I quit even trying. I guess she was unwilling to share any trade secrets from the Fraternal Order of the Ovaries? lol! Ohio8 08-10-2021, 09:10 PM My dad: "Turn off the juice when not in use." Caroline13 08-13-2021, 10:46 PM Talking about this thread with 2 friends today and we shared what our parents said too, and my parents both said "turn the lights off when you leave the room" and another one is "god will punish you", this from my religious mom. opus 08-20-2021, 11:39 PM If ever I said I was bored, Mom would say " Well you can help me do the cleaning " ! :D 267076 Sherrie Anson 08-21-2021, 10:35 AM Wait till your dad gets home. Exactly what my mom used to say to me whenever I want something or if I did something wrong. Oh, I miss them. Caroline13 08-21-2021, 02:16 PM Sherrie, our parents were our first teachers and we learned from them and then we went thru our lives and learned more for ourselves. They only had so much to offer. You can miss them and just keep good memories. Penny Lane 08-21-2021, 02:30 PM Because I said so! TVLegend 09-07-2021, 09:45 PM Because I said so! Thank you. Bonniegirl 09-07-2021, 10:16 PM My Mom used to say " More ( so and so) than Carters have liver pills" !! :D I think you older folks have heard this , but the younger posters might want to google it ! ;) Like for instance if my Sister and I wanted to buy more barettes or hair ribbons or something and Mom thought we had enough already and we didn't need them , she would say " You have more of them than Carter's have liver pills " !!:D Funny thing at the time we had NO idea what this even meant !!:lol: stevea 09-07-2021, 10:23 PM Of course there was the old "Children should be seen and not heard." That was outdated even for my grandparents. |
