"Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist" Nears Comeback with Holiday Movie on Roku; Core Cast Expected to Return

"Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist" lives on. The buzzy series, which was canceled by NBC after two seasons, would get a new chapter with a holiday movie for streamer Roku, I have learned.

The series’ main cast, led by Jane Levy, is slated to return, I hear.



The deal, which is still being finalized, is for a movie, but in success, it could lead to another season of the show, sources said.

The pending pact with Roku caps an extensive effort by "Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist" lead studio Lionsgate Television to find a new home for the show after NBC canceled the series in June and a potential move to NBCUniversal streamer Peacock did not materialize.

"Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist", which was canceled as a series last spring by NBC, will sing on as a Christmas-themed feature film streaming on the Roku Channel this holiday season.

Production of "Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas" will start this month in Vancouver, with Lionsgate remaining onboard as the studio. The film will stream for free on the ad-supported Roku Channel in the U.S.

All 25 episodes of the series will stream on the Roku Channel in the U.S. later this fall.




Cast members Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, David St. Louis, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Gallagher and Bernadette Peters are all returning.

Story-wise, the film picks up where Season 2 left off, according to the official announcement.

"Roku has been really amazing, supportive partners and really just wanting to lean into all things Zoey," creator Austin Winsburg tells EW of the Dec. 1 holiday movie. "The challenge of the movie was to feel like people could come in without having seen the show before and to feel like we're telling a whole story as a movie, not just extended episodes of the show. So it's a story that has some version of a beginning, middle, and end. But I also feel like we keep it open enough that, should the demand be out there, I could definitely see the story continuing, either more episodes or more movies."
