I just saw a clip of the episode when Big Money Grip visited Fred and Aunt Esther and Grip told them that he was Lamont's father. It caused Esther to say "What did you say N****?" Anyone think it was controversial for her to use a racial slur on prime time TV?

It wasn't controversial during the time that the show was originally aired. Edgy, yes; controversial, no.

They showed the clip of Red Foxx saying it on The History Of Sitcoms, I think they said he was the first to say it on air.

Fred has used the word a couple of times too.

Also in the Big Money Grip episode, Esther's line was edited when it was on TV Land, she says "sucka'" instead the N word
