Do you think the writers should have had more episodes about serious subjects?
I only recall three serious subjects, Dorothy's gambling problem, Rose was
tested for the aids virus and Rose's dependency on some pills.

I liked how they could have the most serious of episodes and still throw a little humor in there...there were episodes about almost everything... Teenage pregancy, the dentist who harassed Rose, the teacher who harassed Blanche, Sophia's friend who wanted to swallow a bottle of pills and end it all... some of those I could have done without! But still memorable shows.

I like most of the serious episodes because they still throw in humor that made me laugh. My favorite serious episode is where Rose is tested for AIDS. I don't know, it's just really good especially when Blanche tells Rose how she got tested too.
There is also the episode where Blanche thinks she is pregnant but is really going through menopause.

Rose: I didn't know you were tested for AIDS. How did you make it through it?
Blanche: I just shut myself in my room and acted like a real bitch to everybody.
Rose: No wonder we couldn't tell!!!

Another serious episode was where Rose had her heart bypass surgery. It was a two-parter, and more of the seriousness was in the second-half. There was also the humor of Rose saying that she wanted to freeze her head so that she could be "revived" when it was possible in the future.

Yep, I forgot what the actual quote was but it's funny but also is still on the serious side. Gotta love the Girls! :D

And don't forget Dorothy's Chronic Fatigue Syndrome...I hardly ever watch that one, cause it's so depressin'...

They also dealt with homosexuality, when Dorothy's lesbian friend Jean came to visit and fell in love with Rose. There was also Blanche's gay brother, Clayton. There was the topic of homelessness when the winning lottery ticket was left in the jacket that wound up at the homeless shelter. Also, teen pregnancy, plastic surgery and euthanasia! The show tackled many serious topics with a great sense of humor!!! :)

I love how the golden girls never once looses it's funniness. Even when rose is inches from death in the last season they throw in that HILARIUS frozen heads dream. The Golden Girls just rule.
