Universal & Peacock Close $400M Deal for New The Exorcist Trilogy; Ellen Burstyn to Reprise Classic Role

Universal Pictures and NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, have closed a reported $400 million-plus deal to purchase worldwide rights for a new Exorcist franchise that will see Ellen Burstyn reprise her role as the mother of a demon-possessed child.

To be directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween), the franchise will star Hamilton‘s Leslie Odom Jr. as the father of a possessed child who seeks out the aid of Burstyn’s Exorcist character Chris MacNeil, mother of the possessed Regan MacNeil (played in the original 1973 film by Linda Blair).

According to Universal, the franchise will encompass three films in total and is described as a “continuation,” rather than a remake, of the 1973 original, which was directed by William Friedkin and adapted by William Peter Blatty based on his novel.

Linda Blair Says There Have Been No Discussions about her Appearing in New The Exorcist Films

Original The Exorcist star Linda Blair says that she has not been approached about appearing in the horror franchise's upcoming reboot films.

"To all my fans asking about my involvement in the new Exorcist reboot," Blair tweeted on Monday, following the announcement about the new films, "as of now there has not been any discussions about me participating or reprising my role. I wish all those involved the best and I appreciate the loyalty and passion the fans have for The Exorcist and my character."

The Exorcist: Believer is the Official Title of David Gordon Green’s Sequel

David Gordon Green‘s new The Exorcist film is set to be a legacy follow-up to the original classic, and the official title was announced at CinemaCon tonight – The Exorcist: Believer.

The first film in the trilogy will be released theatrically on October 13, 2023, with Leslie Odom Jr. starring alongside Ellen Burstyn, who will be reprising her role as Chris MacNeil from the original 1973 movie.




The first plot details we were provided with last year tease, “Odom Jr. will play the father of a possessed child. Desperate for help, he tracks down Ms. Burstyn’s character.”

Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Nettles, and Olivia Marcum are also on board.
