View Full Version : What sitcom(s) stayed on the air too long and why???

1.All of Paul Henning shows. All his shows based on someone being from the country or living in the country. The characters were too one-dimensional and the concept of his shows got tiring and boring after three to four seasons depending on which show. Petticoat Junction should have gone off after Bea Benederet passed away.
2.The Andy Griffith Show. After Barney left the edge was gone and the plug then should have been pulled
3.Three's Company. The last two seasons, especially the final season of the show, was horrible and the edge was gone. Plots was being recycled with different spins to them
4.Alice. After Flo the chemistry was no longer there and it should have ended after five years on the air. How many bad food jokes about Mel's cooking can one make. I can't stand to watch the repeats of the final season. They only made 16 episodes of that season because the writers ran out of material.
5.Cheers. Should have stopped when Shelley Long left. The show from that point on lost the clever dialogue it had especially the first two seasons and it turned into one smut joke and sleeping around show. It's a wonder Sam did not get AIDS.
6.All of Norman Lear shows that goes beyond five years. He does not know when to give a show the ax and go out on top. All his shows that are hits are great to watch within the first five seasons and when they go beyond that it gets bad and quite tiring to watch. The freshness is gone.
7.The Cosby Show. Bill definitely overstayed his welcome. His ego got in the way instead leaving the show while it was riding high in the ratings. But instead it degenerated into having too many strange relatives becoming regulars. It got tiring watching Cliff complain about too many people in the house. Hello it's your house and you can say who live there and cannot.
8.Bewitched. We beat that subject to the ground that it should had left the airwaves after Dick York had to leave the show. The eighth and final season was horrible. Recycled plots and half hearted performances from the cast especially Liz Montgomery. She did not want to be there. The only redeeming quality of that season was how sexy Liz looked with longer hair and those mini skirts. That is a true sex symbo.
9.Family Ties. The last two seasons the shows plots were bad and repetitous especially when the storyline featured Alex.

There are more and will come back later.

I disagree. I think a show should get cancelled when the show isn't in the top 30 for two consecutive seasons. I mean, what's the point of cancelling a show when its still high in the ratings? I think that if the cast and crew want to go on with the show and the show is doing good in the ratings, it should keep going until otherwise.

2.The Andy Griffith Show. After Barney left the edge was gone and the plug then should have been pulled

~~~I agree with this one 100%. I hate those color episodes because Don had left, and Andy had a really grumpy attitude. My favorite episodes are the black and white ones. I only have a few from the color seasons.
6.All of Norman Lear shows that goes beyond five years. He does not know when to give a show the ax and go out on top. All his shows that are hits are great to watch within the first five seasons and when they go beyond that it gets bad and quite tiring to watch. The freshness is gone.
~~~All in the Family is a great show, but when Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner left- it was time to pull the plug. Then Stephanie showed up. I didn't like her all that much. I still want to see Archie Bunker's Place and see how it is. To think it would've been a damn good ending when Gloria and Mike left for California that was the perfect time to turn the lights off and pull the plug. I turn the channel everytime I see the intro to All in the Family and see Archie wearing a sweater. Gray sweater= Stephanie years (I know its weird to notice that, but that's always how I could tell the good years from the bad years.)

~~~Dick York rocked. Dick Sergent was okay, but Dick York was Darrin Stevens.
I tried to find a picture of Liz in a mini skirt but couldn't. Here she is with her long hair from the 70's. She was truly beautiful!:)
Glad mstewart brought up how sexy Liz was. Gives me a chance to post her pictures!
Here is a picture of Liz from the 50's. Gorgeous!
Of the more contemporary shows, "Roesanne" springs to mind.
Most of the folks on this wonderful site agree that the show really was pushing it the last couple of seasons, particularly after the Connors won the lottery.
Even though it is one of my favorite shows, as my avatar and signature will show, I also have to say that "M*A*S*H" should have packed it in a few seasons earlier. The show was brilliant, but no program can maintain the same creative edge for eleven seasons...
Roseanne in the 9th and final season, the show lost it's edge that season. The jokes just got really bad, mainly because Roseanne had a lot of writing credits that season. And she couldn't write good jokes for that season. Also because of the whole lotto thing, that ruined the show.
Threes Company when Suzanne left, I really think that she made the show. when she left the show was down the tube.
Full House. Once all the plots started to be centered around Michelle (and John Stamos really didn't want to be there) they needed to go.
The following stayed on the air too long IMHO:
1. Cheers: I cannot imagine producing eleven seasons' worth of shows about a bar, much less eleven episodes. (Then again, I'm not a bar hopper.) I've said it before, but it should have ended before The Wonder Years did so it would not drown TWY out of the media. It's not The Brady Bunch, you know!
2. Married ... with Children: How can a show that garnered so much protest (at least according to some things I read) last more than ten seasons?
3. The Simpsons: How would this show do if it didn't get to gravy train off of the NFL on Fox?
4. Friends: How can NBC afford to pay six people $1 million an episode? That's too much! (And they said $1.2 million was too much for ABC to produce an episode of The Wonder Years in 1993, go figure.)
5. Jerry Springer: Too controversial to last 11 seasons IMHO.
6. Beverly Hills, 90210: Should have been cancelled before it was placed opposite The Wonder Years Wednesday nights. That or put in the 5-6 am slot.
7. Howard Stern: Too controversial to last that long IMHO. (At least CBS cancelled their show with Mr. Stern last November; I'm waiting for E! to follow suit.)
8. Saturday Night Live: I used to like this show, then it got offensive.
9. Murphy Brown: The show should have ended after Dan Quayle's criticism. He was, after all, our Vice President at the time! patriot:
That's all I can think of at the moment.
1. Diff'rent Strokes- Once the kids got older, who wanted to see Arnold in grown up situations?(Not too many that's for sure) Sam McKinney didn't help either!
2. Facts Of Life- How long were these girls going to live together? Especially after Mrs. G left!
3. Wings- How that show lasted as long as it did with subpar ratings is beyond me.
4. Friends- They live together, eat together and sleep together...How manyof youhave friends like that?
5. M*A*S*H- I believe the war ended by season two. ;)
It seems your mad at everyone that The Wonder Years didn't get the ratings and attention you wish it should have. It's not Cheers,Friends, Bevery Hills, Fox's, or NBC's fault. ABC was the one who should have promoted all of that for the show. They didn't because the ratings went down the tube, and they figured no one really cared about the show anymore.
Don't blame anyone except ABC and the viewers who just stopped watching the show, for the lack of promotion of the Wonder Years.
I wouldn't really say they got repetitous, but I agree that too many centered around Alex. In these seasons, they should have had more centered around Meredith Baxter, and Michael Gross.
Shows i Agree with you
1) All In The Family~That show lasted past its end. What was the point after everyone left. When u basically lose all the characters, why ruin the show?
2)Saturday Night Live~I think the only reason people watch this show anymore is because of the all the guest stars. The Comedians arent funny, the writers are pretty much a sick joke & its better known as a classic
3)Diff'rent Strokes~I still dont understand why this one was on tv so long. The characters were so predictable and after their all old, gray and boring, who cares if they still do the same thing as when they were younger.
4)Full House~ I enjoyed watching this show, and it mostly aways stayed orginal and funny.... but i just gotta say.. how long can all these people live together? I mean, they still be together if it wasnt for the rating & John Stamos. I'm glad it ended when it did.
5) Andy Griffin~ one word: Barney?!?!?!?!
6)Cheers~(Not competely) I agree the show was pretty much over when Shelly Long was gone, but it was one of those shows u would miss.
My own to add~
Happy Days~I think this show was history after all the characters lost meaning
ER~ its over, i think its boring im just amazed of how many people watch it
Disagree
Threes Company~Chrissy wasnt the whole show. It was John Ritters Show. I just think it should've ended 4 episodes sooner.
Married with Children~it was a fun show, yea the protests were boring, but the humor was the same and still funny. I liked the show the older it got.
Friends~I think the show could run up to its 12th season, but its better to end its sooner cos u wanna keep ALL the characters & save some money. i just dont know what im gonna watch after it ends.
Simpsons~ The show isnt as funny. The reruns are better... what the hell.. i dont care. Its the best show anyway!
Bewitched~I think after Dick York left, Dick Sergent was still gr8... i know it was all the same after it was over... but i liked the show as it was.
Shows that ended just in time~
The Nanny~ She wasnt the nanny anymore. It was pretty much over. I liked the way they handled it
Facts of Life~ a gr8 show, but it was due soon to end
Jeffersons~ I always thought there were just enough episodes
I dream of Jeannie~ I liked every last episode
I apologize that I seem to have based so many of my answers on The Wonder Years, but TWY was a one-of-a-kind show that has a special place in my heart that nothing will ever replace. The Waltons is very similar. I kept watching TWY until the end, regardless of the cast of characters. I didn't even notice Winnie's absence at the beginning of high school in the first part of the fifth season! (I wonder, no pun intended, why some people seemed miffed about it). The news events and the musical selections made the show so great. Each new episode was a surprise worth seeing, no matter how old Kevin was, 17 or 117.
Just my two cents!
I feel the same way about the Wonder Years it is one of my favorite shows. But I can only blame ABC for the lack of promotion of the final episode.
Family Matters was a great show, but it went on too long. As Steve Urkel got older, he started to look like a man who obviously worked out everyday. He no longer looked like the nerd that we grew to love -- and that's when they added Stefan to the mix, a more suave version of Steve. That got old after awhile.
I don't agree with Friends going on too long. Right now, it is better than ever. The high ratings prove that. It is a great show and I don't know why everyone picks on it all the time. I used to complain about Friends too and didn't understand all of the hype. But then I sat down and actually watched a few of the episodes and realized that I love it!
I also disagree that SNL should end. I couldn't imagine it not being on. So much talent is showcased on that show, and it is all the more exciting because many of the scenes are live. Very few shows are like that anymore. It has been fresh, funny and entertaining since the beginning. I'm only sorry that Will Farrell had to leave the show recently. It isn't going to be the same without him.
Family Matters- After the 5th season the show just got ridiculous, I don't even remember watching this show after it moved from ABC to CBS.
Roseanne- This show got so awful during the last few seasons. But the middle years were simply the best, some of the cleverest jokes ever on a sitcom.
All In the Family- Once Mike and Gloria left...they should've ended it. Archie lost his most ready foil.
Friends- Actually when the 2001-2002 season started...I hated the episodes. But now that they're rerunning them during the summer, I realize that they are pretty good. Then when I look at seasons 6 and 7 it seems as if Friends was in a bit of a slump as far as quality goes. So Friends kinda did a reverse 'jump' during the 8th season. Hopefully they'll have a good 9th season.
Boy Meets World- Don't ask me why I was watching the Disney channel the other day, but I caught a glimpse of this show after Topanga and Corey got married (I stopped watching it on ABC by this time) and the episode was soooooo bad. Just BAD!!!!!
Facts of Life - Sadly, IMO, the show lost it's touch after Mrs. Garrett left. I mean, I can remember pretty much every episode up until Mrs. G left, and then after that, very few did I like, but that's just my opinion. I LOVE the show, but it just to me, lost it's touch.
Friends - Well, I USE to think the show went on too long, but with the 8th season, it really picked up and improved so much.
Cheers - I applaud them for going on for 11 years, but to me, it was just a few years too long, the show was still very good, but it just seemed like it went on forever.
Simpsons - Come one, it's now in it's what, 13th season? The first several were pretty good, IMO, but then they just got so ridiculous and over the top.
Diff'rent Strokes - NEVER should have switched networks. That almost always means the end for a show (Family Matters & Step By Step are good examples). And I'm sorry, but I did not like Sam at all. Maggie I did (when played by Dixie Carter).
Family Matters & Step By Step - See above
Boy Meets World - I really think the show was pretty good, but it lost it's touch after they went into highschool, imo, because the whole focus kinda changed, I dunno, I haven't see the show in like 2 years, lol, so i'm just going on what I can remember, but ITA, the episodes after Topanga and Cory married were pretty awful.
The list does go on and on, most all of these shows are my faves, but I just feel they went on maybe one season too long, or lost their initial focus, and were struggling to stay alive.
I don't agree on that. I thought the episodes without Mrs. Garret were pretty good and still funny.
I never said FOL wasn't funny after Mrs. G left, but I just didn't like the sudden change, I like the Beverly Ann episodes, but they're just not my favorites.
I'm gonna list mine in different way. Here's the labeling so you can understand:
"Name of Show" Year it began-Year it ended (Year I think it shoulda ended)
Here ya go:
"The Facts of Life" 1979-1988 (1986)
"Friends" 1994-2003 (1995)
"Diff'rent Strokes" 1978-1986 (1984)
"All in the Family" 1971-1979 (1977)
"Three's Company" 1977-1984 (1983)
"Saturday Night Live" 1975-present (1990)
"Bewitched" 1964-1972 (1970)
"The Brady Bunch" 1969-1974 (1972)
"Will & Grace" 1998-present (2001)
"One Life to Live" 1968-present (1978)
"Port Charles" 1997-present (1999)
Shows I think shoulda lasted longer:
"The Partridge Family" 1970-1974 (1976)
"Dark Shadows" 1966-1971 (present)
