I also found that there was a sequel to The Fly called The Fly II and what I learned about it so far is that it debuted in 1989 and it's about the son of Jeff Goldblum's character who also turns into a fly. But surprisingly neither Jeff Goldblum nor Geena Davis return in The Fly II. Was this sequel a flop when it debuted in theaters?

Hi, Bestie! I hate to tell you, but The Fly II was a flop. It was a bad movie. The Fly with Goldblum was well acted and had great special effects. The Fly II was not and in fact killed all hopes of more The Fly films. The black and white one from the 50's and Goldblum's version are great movies.

The Fly II was not a flop, it performed decently in the theaters, and the special effects were good as they were done by Chris Walas who did the effects for Cronenberg's The Fly. Walas was one of the top creature effects artists of the 80s/early 90s (Gremlins, Arachnophobia, Cronenberg's Naked Lunch, Dragonslayer)
Eric Stoltz is good as the son of Goldblum and Davis, it feature one of the saddest moments in any horror film.
Saw both The Fly and The Fly II in the theater during their releases.
