View Full Version : hard to believe...
I posted something about this last year , guess its the "in " thing among stars now but according to what I read at work tonight many stars dont own tv sets or even radios. Or at the very least dont allow their children to watch and listen.
Examples they gave...
Bette Midler: does not allow her teenage daughter to watch tv or even visits somebody's house with television. Bette thinks tv makes one stupid.
Madonna: doesnt allow her kids to not only watch tv but even listen to the radio. Not even her own music !!!. They said that again her reason being is that tv/radio is pretty much garbage.
Lisa Kudrow from Friends is another who doesnt allow her child , nor does she watch the tube herself.
The late Michael Landon, his kids were ONLY allowed to watch Little House and nothing else. I do wonder if the rule later on included Highway to Heaven. Bonanza on the other hand was off limits.
To me it seems so weird , giving so much and making money off tv but yet they put it down. On a simliar note many radio djs dont own radios, if they do listen at all its usually the new satellite radios out now but for the most part NEVER local radio. This is what the story was about for the most part I read with the celebrities thrown in.
Also on this subject , not allowing kids access to tv and such-I do wonder if many of the stars who do this , hide current happenings from their kids too. In other words I have to wonder if Bette Mider's daughter or Madonna's kids know anything at all about September 11th or that our President is George W. Bush?
DandR 07-14-2002, 04:03 AM It seems to be hypocritical to me, but what do I know. They act as if being in the entertainment business is something to be ashamed of. In the world of sports, tennis players tend to discourage their kids from taking up the sport, but baseball players on the other hand encourage their sons to aim for the majors.
Yeah, it's funny...
I've often read about some actors who have shunned their bread and butter...
I read a few years ago about actor Jeremy Pivren (The Larry Sanders Show, Cupid) claiming he didn't own a Televison.
What?!!!
It's your medium! You are a TV actor! You don't watch TV?
Pul-eeze.
joan davis fan 07-14-2002, 07:20 AM I remember when Bette Midler said that she was "anti-tv" and the fact she wouldnt allow her daughter ( who I believe is well in her teens ) watch tv even at other peoples homes, well I take that back, Bette does allow her daughter to watch videos on their VCR. Yet she did a show not long ago for CBS.
But actually this happens all the time, not just in entertainment but in other jobs too. I know a guy who runs a group of McDonalds restaurants yet both he and his wife cannot stand fast food. He used to tell me that he wouldnt be caught dead eating at one, even at one of his own restaurants. But he loves that big paycheck Micky D's sends him each payday.
Same with amusement parks. My neighbor's brother-in-law for years used to work in the business office for one of the Six Flags Parks. Not only did he not like rollercoasters but he felt that such places were bad for kids, he wouldnt even allow his own kids to go though being an employee they would have gotten in free as well as other big discounts. Not exactly a cheap place..have you been to a Six Flags lately? He retired a few years back and he is still "anti-theme park".
If it were me, if I get to the point that I no longer have respect for the job I was doing then I would quit and find another line of work to get into.
If any star ( or really anyone else ) hides current news from their kids, that is really doing some damage to them. I would even go as far as say it indirectly child abuse. My co-worker was homeschooled til age 16. Though he was allowed to watch videos
and read books ( only family ones ) he was not allowed to watch television shows and anything on the radio. He was allowed to read magazines and newspapers but His parents would clip out all the bad news before hand, they felt by keeping things "positive" his life would be too.
He didnt even know Reagan was shot or that the Challenger exploded til years after it happened. They even kept his grandmothers death from him, telling him that she "moved" to Buffalo, New York . In other words keeping away anything negative from their kids , their children would go up to be happy. Didnt work out that way.
He is in his 30s now and he still has problems dealing with the real world because his parents hid so much. If Madonna, Bette Midler or whoever does the same thing-hope they know they are actually hurting their child in the long run by doing such things.
Will and Grace Fanatic 07-14-2002, 01:05 PM Well, I thinks it's kind of weird to be anti tv. No one in my family has ever been banned from tv. I guess some people think that tv will turn them into zombies or turn their children into criminals. I don't think that is true. As long as you don't watch to much tv,you won't turn into a mindless person. But I don't think tv could turn you into a criminal if it does it's not the entertainment of tv that did it to you. It was your parents lousy parenting.

I don't think Bette's looking at it the correct way. Now, I know I'm a tv fan- but I'm not exactly a zombie either. I don't claim to be the smartest one in the bunch, but I am smart. I love to read. So it ain't like I spend all my time on the computer or sitting in front of the tv.

The example you just gave above about the guy is pretty sad. It's like his parents kept him in a plastic bubble or something. The parents may think it was the right thing to do to hide all the bad stuff in life, but it isn't a good thing.
RainMan 07-14-2002, 05:15 PM I have never been banned by TV. She did keep my bro away from the TV because he kept calling those "Must be 18 or older to call" numbers if u catch my drift. He can watch it but he hangs out with his friends.
As for me I can't live life without TV. My dad can live without TV, but he doesn't say to me "go outside and turn that damn TV off" He WANTS me to watch TV sometimes just to get out of his way. My mom and all of my mom's side of the family cannot survive without TV. That's one of the two most important things...eat and watch TV. Yes I know I ruined my life but I am still good in school.
But I don't think violence on TV encourages me, it keeps me out of trouble...like the Law & Order shows or Really violent movies don't affect me in any way. I'm interested in them but I wouldn't do the crap they do on TV in real life.....that's plain ********.
I USED TO WORK HERE BUT NOT HERE.
dawsongirl 07-14-2002, 06:37 PM I'm with Jenny. I grew up in front of the TV, but I was 13th out of my class of 395. Guess TV didn't screw me up that bad. It's all in what you watch or let your kids watch. People need to learn to be parents and tell their kids what's good and what's bad. It's not hard.

The only show Miss Midler should be preventing her kid from watching was that crap-ass show "Bette" she did a few years back!
;)

Will and Grace Fanatic 07-15-2002, 01:51 AM It's hard to beleive Bette is anti tv when she does talk shows alot. Also when she did a guest appearance on Seinfeld.
My parents would never ban me from TV, unless it was a short-term punishment. I mean, my parents love TV. Both my mom AND my dad were 100%, positively, absolutely, addicted to primetime soap operas in the 80s. Dallas, Dyansty, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest.......if it was a primeitme soap opera, they watched it. They can tell you all about the Colbys, Southfork Ranch, they can even give you the names of the residents of the cul-de-sac. My mother was the one who taught me about the whole Who Shot JR thing. So it would be very silly for them to take our TV out of the house.
