View Full Version : Jeopardy! Has Narrowed Down Its Permanent Host Search to Three Contenders
icecream 06-28-2021, 07:09 PM Some of you will remember mriggles who used to post here. He is close friends with someone on the Jeopardy! staff, so sometimes gets inside info he posts on Facebook (and no I am not telling you his real name if you don't know it to protect his privacy). This is the post he made tonight.
"Dr. Sanjay Gupta begins his 2 week run as Jeopardy Guest host tonight. The Decision on who will be the Permanent Host of Jeopardy is being made now. The suits at Sony have it narrowed down to 3 people, and they will make a final decision in the next week or 2, and the plan is to announce it in Mid to late July. Production for season 38 with the New host at the helm is scheduled to begin on Tuesday July 27th."
TSMIV 06-28-2021, 07:27 PM Aaron Rodgers is my fave.
icecream 06-28-2021, 07:29 PM The names of who the final three contenders are were left out of his post of course. Anyone who hasn't guest hosted yet is likely just filling time, Levar Burton fans won't be happy. Ken Jennings certainly has to be one though considering he got six weeks, at least three times as much as anyone else has had. They probably want a woman as one of the contenders and Mayim Bialik has gotten a lot of positive response. That leaves the third finalist. I sure hope it isn't Aaron Rodgers. That total dullard has way too much support, Mike Richards has said he would be willing to work around Aaron's NFL schedule. Sony so needs to overrule him and ignore Aaron's campaigning for the job. Hopefully the third finalist is Buzzy Cohen. He needs to tone down his loudness some, but otherwise was a great host. Anderson Cooper was surprisingly good, but I doubt he would have time with all his news jobs.
Frank Gannucci 06-28-2021, 08:28 PM Ken Jennings should be a lock. After all, he won the Jeopardy Greatest of All Time in early 2020. (On a side note, I find it ironic that they had the Greatest of All Time episodes during the last year of Alex’s life.)

howilu 06-29-2021, 09:43 AM I cast my vote for Mayim Bialik. She's very bright and handled the show very well. It would be groundbreaking to have a female host one of TV's best known game shows. The number of women game show hosts has grown over the last 10 years with Elizabeth Banks hosting Press Your Luck, Jane Lynch with Hollywood Game Night and Meredith Viera on 25 Words or Less. Bialik would be a great addition but first I'm curious to see how Levar Burton does.

I would vote for Ken. And I think Alex would have wanted Ken. But I fear the producers will cave to the woke culture.
James28 07-02-2021, 01:56 PM Regarding LeVar Burton, how many years do you see him realistically hosting Jeopardy! based on his current age? I'm more worried about him croaking while still on the job just like Alex Trebek did.:crying: It's not like Mr. Burton has any serious health problems or anything.
If NONE of the guests hosts this season are selected, and they do end-up going with an unknown, can we PLEASE just get a fresher and younger personality to host Jeopardy!, please? I'm also worried about taking any of these guest-hosts away from their other endeavors. Not sure about any other former Jeopardy! contestants, either; what if there's another mega tournament in the future that he'll want to participate in (similar to the Ultimate Tournament of Champions or the Battle of the Decades)?
Coffeecup 07-03-2021, 04:11 PM James, Just how young do you want someone to be to host? Some of the 50-60 year older may want to do the show 10 years. Is Jeopardy looking for a host to host til he dies? Never thought of that. Although I like Jeopardy does the show have to go on forever. How many more years are Pat and Vanna going to go on Wheel of Fortune - till each is 90?

I don't get this. Anybody at any age can die at anytime, unfortunately.
A friend of mine (though he had health issues) died in his sleep from a heart attack at 34. My mother's step-brother died from a heart attack at 32. She told me he came home from work and sat at the dining room table for dinner. He told his wife that he "wasn't feeling well" and she stepped in the kitchen to get him a wet cloth and he was dead at the table when she returned. He reportedly had no known health issues and it is possible that he had something that wasn't diagnosed, but we do not know.
Just because someone is younger doesn't mean they are going to live longer. Also, 64 isn't that old and Burton could host "Jeopardy!" for possibly 15 years or so.

Apparently you must not have saw my post on the "Who Should Replace Alex Trebek?" thread:
I would most likely prefer to get somebody who was born in the late 1970s for the new host of Jeopardy!, even if it's a complete unknown. Most of the people who have been suggested in this thread so far are too old. Jeff Probst, Ryan Seacrest, and Chris Harrison would not be desirable choices for me. And on the subject of Ken Jennings, who is already slated for a guest-hosting stint this month: I'm not sure is any former Jeopardy! contestants should become permanent hosts, either.
Just don't select anyone who was born before that point. I don't want the new permanent host of Jeopardy! dying while still on the job just like Alex did, naturally or otherwise. These type of situations are never okay.

Well, there's nothing anyone can do to prevent that from happening. As I said, anybody at any age can die at anytime.

:angryfireOh, so now you're saying it IS okay for people, regardless of how long their career tenure is, to die while still on the job, and you really DO want LeVar Burton to become Jeopardy!'s permanent host?
Also, what about gunshot wounds and car accidents? At least they're preventable, unlike cancer.

Huh?? What the hell are you talking about?
What can be done to stop people dying while on “the job”? No, I don’t have a problem with LeVar Burton being “Jeopardy!’s” host, but it’s not my decision to make.
James28 07-05-2021, 05:31 PM ^^JamesG, it is clear that we are not on the same page about people dying while still active in their careers (you apparently saying it is okay, and me saying it is not). I want you to leave me the **** alone and stop being the only user to reply to me about this. I mean it this time. Haven't you figured out why I requested to TJ that you not speak to me again until you make a nice/non-inflammatory/non-mean post? I think you're in violation of that order, and I was expecting CatsRule's thoughts on this, or even TJ's.

I never said dying while still active in a career is “okay”, but what can be done about it? You tell me.
I’m having a discussion with you and trying to understand what you mean. How am I being mean and inflammatory towards you? You just can’t seem to handle those who don’t see eye-to-eye with you. You don’t get to say who can and cannot reply to you.

I DON'T CARE. If you're being mean/inflammatory to me, I can and will request to the admins that you be banned from interacting with me, especially if you're literally the ONLY one replying to me on a certain subject. And I hate when you use the phrase "you seem to", so cut that out, and avoid directing that kind of phrasing to me next time.

You didn’t answer my question… how was I being mean and inflammatory towards you? What does me being the “only one” replying to you have to do with anything? Please make it make sense.

Not how it works, you accused me of doing something so back it up.
James28 07-05-2021, 06:32 PM Well since you're forcing it on me (and please do not ask again)...
By stating that anybody at any age can die at anytime, and there's nothing anyone can do to prevent that from happening. I think you're implying unnatural deaths like gunshot wounds, auto accidents, plane crashes, and blunt trauma are unpreventable, and discussion getting nasty from there, especially after I requested to TJ months ago that you not be allowed to reply to me unless such replies are in a tone that doesn't sound mean.
If I want to get other users' thoughts on what I wanted to talk about in the first place, I will ask those specific users. You don't have to keep butting in and being the only user to reply to me (again, DO NOT ASK HOW).

I still don’t see how I was mean towards you. You also don’t get to dictate on who can and cannot reply to you and when.
You can’t prevent an unnatural death. Somebody can walk up to me and shoot me on the street for no reason. There’s nothing that could be done about it.

If people want to reply then they will.
icecream 07-05-2021, 08:03 PM I was expecting CatsRule's thoughts on this.No one can really predict how long someone lives. If LeVar Burton stays in good health though, he could host for at least 20 years. Johnny Gilbert is still going strong as announcer into his 90s, it would be cool if he hit the century mark. In Alex Trebek's case it wasn't his age that got him, but the pancreatic cancer. That is a deadly disease with not much chance of survival. Michael Landon and Patrick Swayze were much younger when they died from the same cancer. I knew LeVar Burton wasn't being considered seriously by the producers and Sony when he only got one week to guest host.
Edward216 07-09-2021, 08:09 PM Well I could maybe go with Mayim Bialik, but I watched a couple episodes she guest hosted and I thought she was a bit too stiff. She needs to lighten up and relax a little and I think she'd be good, but if she's going to be like that all the time then no, because I thought she was boring. Other than that I want it to be LeVar Burton, and if he doesn't get picked as the new host of Jeopardy then I won't be watching. Not that I've watched much since Alex died anyways.
Ed.
icecream 07-16-2021, 05:24 PM July 27 was the original plan for taping the new season. Now it will be a bit longer, mriggles says three and a half weeks from now. "It is down to 2 people with a chance to get the job, with a third not totally out of it yet." I know George S has been campaigning for the permanent job. It is a good thing he only got one week, that surely means the producers aren't taking him seriously like the two weekers and Ken Jennings. I saw Monday night with George, didn't care to come back for more.
umfan87 07-16-2021, 05:51 PM George is boring as hell not to mention in my opinion not very attractive to look at but to each their own
Coffeecup 07-17-2021, 10:14 PM I could watch the show with the guest host and it really wouldn't matter to me. The show is the questions and the contestants.
MediaHoarder 07-18-2021, 12:00 PM I can't believe this is even a contest. Ken Jennings is the obvious and only choice. None of the guest hosts could hold a candle to him. If they pick anyone else I am done with the show.
Babalu 07-18-2021, 03:55 PM I can't believe this is even a contest. Ken Jennings is the obvious and only choice. None of the guest hosts could hold a candle to him. If they pick anyone else I am done with the show.
Me too. I've stopped watching the parade of guest hosts. I think they're crazy to do this because they've gotten a lot of people out of the habit of watching the show. I've been watching Jeopardy since I'm 6 years old and even tried to get on when contestant searches were just sending in post cards and hoping yours was picked.
I really can't stand when people want to pick someone only because they're black or a woman, as if that's more noble.

Ed.
MediaHoarder 07-20-2021, 10:15 AM So wrong?
None of the clowns they have had as guest hosts have even so much as played the game that I remember, except of course for Ken who happens to be player with the longest run, the title of greatest of all time, and as I recall the only one to win in a game against IBM's Watson, even though he lost the tournament as a whole.
The other guests hosts are a mixture of news clowns, TV doctors, and some actress from the Big Bang Theory. Ken Jennings could probabally play against that entire circus of jokers and win handily.
If you watch the behind the scenes pieces with Alex they did its clear the host has to be sharp, Alex worked very hard to do it well. Ken would have no problem doing that, the same cannot be said for any of the rest of these people.
James28 07-20-2021, 11:46 AM Well I could maybe go with Mayim Bialik, but I watched a couple episodes she guest hosted and I thought she was a bit too stiff. Wow, you just have to go for the oldest choice, do you?
I have already said that I do not want LeVar Burton (or anyone who was well-known before the current syndicated version of Jeopardy! debuted) as Jeopardy!'s permanent host going forward. Posts like this just prove how overrated Mr. Burton is when it comes to selecting a new permanent host. What makes you think he'll be any good, especially compared to Alex Trebek? He doesn't have to be the ONLY good choice. If everyone insists on Mr. Burton being chosen, then what's the point of getting a good choice for new Jeopardy! host, anyway?:(
Just choose somebody younger already. I don't care if it's an unknown at this point. And I don't care what anyone says, either.
JamesG 07-20-2021, 12:08 PM ^ Why does your opinion matter more than anyone else’s? Are you choosing the new host?

Can you guys both agree to disagree and knock it off? Nobody wants to read the constant bickering between you two. It's time to end this never ending feud.
I really don't want to allow members to ignore moderators or admins. It would defeat the purpose of having any.

Edward216 wasn't being mean and inflammatory, JamesG was, acting like he was the ONLY person authorized to reply to me when CatsRule could have easily offered his thoughts on who Jeopardy!'s new host should be (and by extension, people dying while still on the job, naturally or otherwise). Especially after I suggested that he (JamesG) avoids speaking to me months ago.

LeVar Burton is unlikely to be picked as the permanent host, so this whole argument is much ado about nothing. Why get so worked up over a decision that you aren't making and have no control over?
It's nice that they are giving him a week after the social media campaign. I would be shocked if it's not Ken Jennings. It would not be surprising if they went with somebody younger like him. People can die of natural causes at any age. None of that can be predicted.
I would be shocked if it's not Ken Jennings.
That's who'd I'd bet on too, assuming he wants the job.

Not true. Buzzy Cohen and Aaron Rodgers have both played Jeopardy. Buzzy won the Tournament of Champions in 2017 and both were good hosts. I think Ken will get the nod, but I'd be ok with Aaron or Buzzy hosting permanently, too. Most of the others sucked.
icecream 07-20-2021, 06:09 PM Aaron Rodgers was a horrible host. Jeopardy! won't be worth watching again if he is made permanent, that would ruin the show. :yousuck: :goaway:

It's because of that social-media campaign that I feared Sony was going to select someone who's outside of the age range I wanted (born in the mid-to-late 1970s). Based on what I've been trying to state all along, if a baby-boomer were selected as Jeopardy!'s permanent host, he or she is not going to have as long a hosting tenure as Alex's was, especially if that person dies naturally (from pancreatic caner or otherwise) while still on the job.
Just because I have no control over this, that gives others the right or an excuse to bully me about it?
JamesG 07-23-2021, 05:05 AM ^ Nobody was bullying you. Disagreeing is not bullying.
Actually, you're the one who was flipping out and telling people who they should / shouldn't be choosing as the next host.

Just because I have no control over this, that gives others the right or an excuse to bully me about it?
Levar next week. Don’t worry, it’s already been filmed, so he won’t die

What are you 5 years old? Stop having a full blown tantrum and get over it already! I'd like LeVar Burton to be the next Jeopardy host, but if he isn't well I just won't watch it anymore. But I certainly won't be having some stupid embarrassing public meltdown over it like you!:mad::eek::lol:

:mad:Like I said, the oldest choice does NOT have to be the only choice. I wish you would just state why LeVar Burton is the only good choice, period. Frankly, if LeVar Burton DOESN'T get selected as the permanent host of Jeopardy!, you're the one who needs to get over it. Please DO NOT be mean to me about this.
JamesG 07-24-2021, 04:54 AM ^ If people want LeVar Burton as the next host then that is their choice and they do not need to explain anything to you about why. In no way does this impact your life. Move on.
btw.. I have plenty of time for jokes. I have oodles.
James28 07-24-2021, 01:26 PM ^^If you direct those jokes at me, I'm going to be very upset and not laugh once. Do not punish people for not having a sense of humor.
And I guess you're really expects fans to hold some Sony execs hostage just because they (Sony) aren't willing to consider somebody who isn't young for the Jeopardy! hosting gig?
JamesG 07-24-2021, 02:26 PM ^ What’s the bottom line here? Why do you care so much about the age of Jeopardy!’s next host and how does this impact you?
James28 07-24-2021, 02:46 PM ^^BECAUSE THE EXECS WANT YOUTH, that's why. They don't want some aged celebrity who's going to drop dead all of a sudden while they're still on the job. This is the last time I'm going to answer this question (or frankly, any question from you on this thread). I don't care what points you're trying to make, or how much you want to overpower and deadlock me, I'm declaring this conversation/dispute OVER. Just leave me the **** alone. I mean it this time. I do not have to reply to you again if you're going to force me to.
JamesG 07-24-2021, 02:52 PM ^ Wow, what impressive debating skills.
So anyone see LeVar yesterday? I enjoyed it, mostly from picturing James28 screaming at him to get off the show.

icecream 08-03-2021, 05:55 PM This was mriggles' latest post:
"The decision has been officially been made on the Permanent host of Jeopardy. The official announcement of the new host will likely be made in the next 2 weeks or so, as the final details are being worked out on the new hosts contract. Production as of now is slated to begin on Season 38 on August 10th with the new host at the helm. Season 38 will begin airing on Monday September 13th."
In other comments on that post he said audiences will likely not be allowed when taping starts so it could still be two weeks before everyone knows. Sony had even considered waiting until the day the new season starts, at least that awful plan was stopped. Just announce it already once the contract is finalized!

icecream 08-03-2021, 07:26 PM (wonders about this message again; wishes to have some understanding of this message)Have you been watching in the last few weeks? There has been a dominant nine day (as of last night) champion named Matt, a trademark of his is always using contractions. On the night of my post he was even more dominant than usual, ending with a total of $74,000. He made mincemeat of his opponents that night.

Jeopardy! was impressive tonight, but not because of LeVar Burton.
LeVar Burton recalls former Jeopardy! boss Mike Richards' initially rejecting him as guest host -- and Richards saying he wasn't interested in the hosting job (https://www.theringer.com/tv/2022/6/1/23149944/levar-burton-jeopardy-scripps-national-spelling-bee)
"He told me later that he didn’t believe me. He didn’t sense in that call my passion," Burton tells The Ringer's Claire McNear, who was responsible for Richards' downfall last year as Jeopardy! executive producer and host. Burton says he spoke to Richards early on in the guest-host rotation. "He also told me that he was not interested in the job, that it was his job to help them find the right person for this job. He said that twice," says Burton. Burton was only offered a one-week guest-hosting slot vs. the Summer Olympics in response to the fan petition. "As it turns out, it was not a competition to find a new host, really," says Burton, who is now hosting the Scripps National Spelling Bee and an upcoming Trivial Pursuit game show. "Because the fix was always in. It was only scandal that forced Sony Pictures Television to go in a different direction. In fact, they tried to keep him on. I mean, I don’t need to rehash the chain of events. It really wasn’t what they said it was. And so my conclusion is I got what I asked for: I got a tryout, I got a chance to guest host. And my assumption was that it was an equal playing field and they were really looking to find a permanent solution. And I guess, ultimately, they did. But the way they got there was very distasteful and turned me off. So I’m happy to have not gotten that job."
TSMIV 06-02-2022, 09:45 AM Levar Burton sucked as host. If he believed it there was a real competition for the job, then he's either naïve or an idiot.

LeVar Burton certainly didn't "suck" as a host! He was a good host, but as they decided against him and he's now going to host a game show version of Trivial Pursuit it really doesn't matter. But I am looking forward to seeing LeVar on Trivial Pursuit whenever it debuts.
