She was already a popular actress from The Partridge Family and L.A. Law. Susan was fired after the first season supposedly because of no chemistry with Jay Thomas. Whoever Jay was, he should have been fired instead if a change had to be made. Maybe Love and War would have lasted longer than three seasons if Susan Dey hadn't been treated like dirt.

I just realized who Jay Thomas was, one of the cast additions who started to bring down Mork and Mindy. And he had a recurring role on Murphy Brown which was also from Diane English, she thought way too much of him to take his side over Susan's.

Jay Thomas was also infamously fired from his recurring role as Eddie LeBec (https://cheers.fandom.com/wiki/Eddie_LeBec) on Cheers (https://www.slashfilm.com/1425088/how-jay-thomas-got-his-cheers-character-eddie-lebac-killed-off/) because he insulted his on-screen love interest Rhea Perlman (https://popculturereferences.com/rhea-perlman-eddie-leblec-killed-off-cheers/) on the radio (https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/cheers-eddie-lebecs-zamboni-death-started-with-drama-behind-the-scenes.html/), not knowing of course, that Rhea happened to be listening (https://decider.com/2017/08/24/jay-thomas-cheers-killed-off/) at the time.

I thought she was very poor, gave the appearance that the character was of very low IQ.

There has to be "more to the story" (https://www.google.com/search?q=Why+was+Susan+Dey+leave+the+CBS+sitcom+%22Love+%26+War%22+after+only+the+first+season+%281992-93%29%3F&sca_esv=8c966bae1d54a914&sxsrf=AE3TifOUKsQRuNITw-e-AqyfvQeullbPKQ%3A1756877592050&ei=GNO3aLbiAveLwbkPtqW6MA&ved=0ahUKEwi2zqaG77uPAxX3RTABHbaSDgYQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=Why+was+Susan+Dey+leave+the+CBS+sitcom+%22Love+%26+War%22+after+only+the+first+season+%281992-93%29%3F&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiWldoeSB3YXMgU3VzYW4gRGV5IGxlYXZlIHRoZSBDQlMgc2l0Y29tICJMb3ZlICYgV2FyIiBhZnRlciBvbmx5IHRoZSBmaXJzdCBzZWFzb24gKDE5OTItOTMpP0iXF1AAWKANcAB4AZABAJgBwgGgAeEGqgEDMC41uAEDyAEA-AEBmAIAoAIAmAMAkgcAoAf1B7IHALgHAMIHAMgHAA&sclient=gws-wiz-serp) other than the notion that Susan Day (https://www.quora.com/What-ever-happened-to-the-actress-Susan-Dey) simply had "no chemistry" with Jay Thomas. I mean, why was Susan hired in the very first place then? I don't know for sure, if Susan was hired first but she was without a doubt, a bigger star or draw than Jay Thomas was at the time. So it's not like Susan was completely expendable at first notice or glance.

I'm not necessarily saying that Susan Dey didn't deserve to be fired, I'm just saying that the supposed circumstances don't sound so "cut and dry". Susan and I hate to suggest this, must of been a real nuisance behind the seasons (https://books.google.com/books?id=fwAyAAAAIBAJ&pg=PA11&dq=Deadly+Love+Susan+Dey&article_id=3847%2C3871607&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjTq_qowYqIAxWWEEQIHb-3JB8Q6AF6BAgJEAI&fbclid=IwY2xjawE34rtleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTyPs4EBx1A1F8iW3FoDrPhz4P4EN5A87W-8oWmz56K4RZS2_3w6-QOF0Q_aem_wJV9NKYN7GEgUFM6Cg4-aw#v=onepage&q=Deadly%20Love%20Susan%20Dey&f=false), if they were just going to dump her (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1993-04-08-ca-20657-story.html) like that after only a single season.

I really hate to speculate, but I'm starting to wonder if one of the "true" reasons behind Susan Dey's dismissal was that her (https://www.google.com/search?q=Susan+Dey+alcoholism&sca_esv=8c966bae1d54a914&sxsrf=AE3TifO9VsNeXI0d1_u_kXARkWI9yBjaGg%3A1756877815625&ei=99O3aOD5JderptQPg8iOoAk&ved=0ahUKEwig0fTw77uPAxXXlYkEHQOkA5QQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=Susan+Dey+alcoholism&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiFFN1c2FuIERleSBhbGNvaG9saXNtSK4kUOkDWPwecAF4AJABAJgB8gKgAcMPqgEHMC4zLjIuM7gBA8gBAPgBAZgCBKACtQnCAgsQABiwAxiiBBiJBcICCxAAGIAEGLADGKIEwgIEECMYJ8ICChAAGIAEGBQYhwLCAgsQABiABBiRAhiKBcICChAAGIAEGEMYigXCAgUQLhiABMICBRAAGIAEwgIKEC4YgAQYFBiHAsICBhAAGBYYHsICCxAAGIAEGIYDGIoFwgIIEAAYgAQYogSYAwCIBgGQBgOSBwcxLjMtMS4yoAffI7IHBTMtMS4yuAeYCcIHAzQtNMgHfw&sclient=gws-wiz-serp) alcoholism (https://www.deseret.com/1993/10/22/19072238/dey-admits-alcoholism-after-tabloid-exposes/) among other issues (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6246100&postcount=17) was making her very unreliable (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6224490&postcount=12) and/or difficult to work with (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6255512&postcount=20). This interview with Jay Leno (https://www.reddit.com/r/cringe/comments/1i4269j/the_lovely_susan_dey_seemingly_drunk_on_the/) is from roughly the same time frame that she was working on Love & War (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5353463&postcount=6).
