I found a John Denver album that was the last album he did before he died called All Aboard and it's a children's album all about trains and so it makes me think that John Denver wanted to sing children's music in his career

I can't see children's music being his main intention, but that he loved it enough to where he wanted to sing that kind of material at some point. I could be wrong, but I think that country singer Collin Raye did a children's album at some point named Counting Sheep.
