View Full Version : Season 6 Beaver's Teacher is Mrs. Rayburn
CosmicCharlie 06-20-2021, 09:53 PM I'm thinking she had a long term contract and they used her as Beav's teacher just to save money
I find her not nearly as appealing in the show as Ms Canfield or Ms Landers
Also there's a late season appearance of Ms Landers and she is still called a MISS, I would think by then she would have been married ?
GentlemanJim 06-21-2021, 12:28 PM You're probably right about the casting. ($$$).
I also believe that there is a "Mrs Rayburn" or two in every young man's academic career. Looking back at my own experience, I attribute it to learning necessary "life skills". LOL.
After having sweet, matronly teachers for grades K-2, I had absolute shrews back to back in grades 3-4. One of them was particularly notorious for being....angry with the world.
I doubt either would go over well in today's evolved teaching environment. Still, I believe the experience prepared me well for encounters I would have later in life.

Particularly since she was engaged in season 4. Her final appearance was in season 5, episode Nobody Loves Me.
Also I agree with the reason for Doris Packer's 2 or 3 appearances as a teacher in season 6--as a recurring actor she probably somehow saved them money.
vitoscotti 06-22-2021, 05:10 AM Interesting the writers had Doris Packer play Mrs Rayburn sweet as pie. School principals could come off as arrogant, stressed, and domineering. She played two other classic parts.
Mrs Wiley- TAGS, and Mrs Huntington- TDVDS.
stevea 06-22-2021, 10:19 AM And Mrs. Sohmers on The Burns and Allen Show. She had some classic scenes with Gracie Allen.
MichaelMartinD 06-25-2021, 11:04 AM Mrs. Rayburn had a no-nonsense exterior but was a nice, fair-minded teacher.
CosmicCharlie 06-27-2021, 05:31 PM will someone make a list of the Grades & Teachers Beaver had ...
Thx

Season 1 Second Grade - Miss Canfield
Seasons 2 thru 4 - grades 3 thru 5 - Miss Landers
Seasons 5 - grade 6 - varying teachers including Mr. Blair
Season 6 - grade 8 (in the show Beaver is never referred to as being in grade 7) - varying teachers including Mrs. Rayburn

and Mr Bailey ?
- The Clothing Drive (1963) ... Mr. Bailey
- Beaver, the Sheep Dog (1962) ... Mr. Bailey
- Beaver's Typewriter (1962) ... Mr. Bailey
stevea 06-27-2021, 07:21 PM Yeah, Bailey was another one, in grades 6 and 8. And Mr. Blair. Mr. Collins sent Beaver to Mrs. Rayburn's office for wearing the monster sweatshirt.
In the eighth grade besides Mrs. Rayburn there Mr. Thompson. I remember him as being the one who shamed Beaver in front of the class over the autobiography Betsy wrote.
vitoscotti 06-27-2021, 07:34 PM Seems like the writers did a lot of age and grade tinkering for Beaver to keep his character young. Jerry Mathers was going to turn 15 when the series ended. And Beaver was only graduating from 8th grade.
Dude111 06-27-2021, 07:37 PM I'm thinking she had a long term contract and they used her as Beav's teacher just to save money Yes wasnt she his teacher for many grades :D
I guess they didnt think we would notice!!
stevea 06-27-2021, 07:41 PM When the series started they should have had Beaver in the third grade. It still would have been off, but they wouldn't have had to skip a grade. When the show started he didn't look like a fourth grader, for sure. Of course filming is always a few months behind airdate.
They also tinkered with Wally:
Season 1 - 8th grade
Season 2 - Freshman
Season 3 - Soph.
Season 4 - Junior
Season 5 - Senior?
Season 6 - Senior?
It would have worked out with him if they started the series with him in 7th grade.

Yep, season 2 thru 4--third thru fifth grade
Dude111 06-28-2021, 01:21 AM Hehehe
Coffeecup 07-06-2021, 03:12 PM I also thought that Mrs Rayburn filled in for other teachers. Wasn't she the principal of the school? When I was in grade school, we did have a principal/teacher.
stevea 07-06-2021, 04:08 PM Yes, principal/teacher. They had her teaching a class a few times in season 6, and once or twice in season3 or 4.
vitoscotti 07-16-2021, 07:40 PM The Mr Blair character was dry as dust. A mistake to replace Sue Randall with a male.
MichaelMartinD 07-17-2021, 08:30 AM Mr. Blair was played by Wendell Holmes, who also played Andy Hadlock the handyman. I personally liked him in his single appearance; he was formal yet kindly.

I agree. He may be "dry" compared to Ms Landers but to me he had a consummate "teacherish" bearing in appearance and manner, all the more so by the standards of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
stevea 07-17-2021, 01:46 PM He played Mr. Willet/Andy Hadlock/Mr. Blair. I think the role he really got into was Andy.
vitoscotti 07-17-2021, 05:57 PM Super babe Dawn Wells would have been a perfect replacement for Sue Randall. She was 23 at the time. She was acting. Leave it to Beaver ended in '63. Gilligan's Island started up in '64.
