You're probably right about the casting. ($$$).
I also believe that there is a "Mrs Rayburn" or two in every young man's academic career. Looking back at my own experience, I attribute it to learning necessary "life skills". LOL.

After having sweet, matronly teachers for grades K-2, I had absolute shrews back to back in grades 3-4. One of them was particularly notorious for being....angry with the world.

I doubt either would go over well in today's evolved teaching environment. Still, I believe the experience prepared me well for encounters I would have later in life.

Particularly since she was engaged in season 4. Her final appearance was in season 5, episode Nobody Loves Me.

Also I agree with the reason for Doris Packer's 2 or 3 appearances as a teacher in season 6--as a recurring actor she probably somehow saved them money.

Interesting the writers had Doris Packer play Mrs Rayburn sweet as pie. School principals could come off as arrogant, stressed, and domineering. She played two other classic parts.
Mrs Wiley- TAGS, and Mrs Huntington- TDVDS.

And Mrs. Sohmers on The Burns and Allen Show. She had some classic scenes with Gracie Allen.

Mrs. Rayburn had a no-nonsense exterior but was a nice, fair-minded teacher.

Yeah, Bailey was another one, in grades 6 and 8. And Mr. Blair. Mr. Collins sent Beaver to Mrs. Rayburn's office for wearing the monster sweatshirt.

In the eighth grade besides Mrs. Rayburn there Mr. Thompson. I remember him as being the one who shamed Beaver in front of the class over the autobiography Betsy wrote.

Seems like the writers did a lot of age and grade tinkering for Beaver to keep his character young. Jerry Mathers was going to turn 15 when the series ended. And Beaver was only graduating from 8th grade.

When the series started they should have had Beaver in the third grade. It still would have been off, but they wouldn't have had to skip a grade. When the show started he didn't look like a fourth grader, for sure. Of course filming is always a few months behind airdate.

Yes, principal/teacher. They had her teaching a class a few times in season 6, and once or twice in season3 or 4.

The Mr Blair character was dry as dust. A mistake to replace Sue Randall with a male.

I agree. He may be "dry" compared to Ms Landers but to me he had a consummate "teacherish" bearing in appearance and manner, all the more so by the standards of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

He played Mr. Willet/Andy Hadlock/Mr. Blair. I think the role he really got into was Andy.

Super babe Dawn Wells would have been a perfect replacement for Sue Randall. She was 23 at the time. She was acting. Leave it to Beaver ended in '63. Gilligan's Island started up in '64.
