Season 6, Episode 27 "Beaver's Prep School"
Aunt Martha drops a zinger after she flies into Mayfield to bask in the glory of sending her favorite nephew to private school.
Upon arrival in the Cleaver living room, she compliments June for having such a lovely home, and then remarks how she always surprised to see proper housekeeping "so far west".
Doubtful she was talking about Cincinnati.
No surf in Cincinnati

Interesting indeed! I always thought MAYFIELD was supposed to be a typical midwest town, but I noticed in the last 2 seasons, they mention the beach and surfing! Now it seems like southern California as if you notice, the sun is ALWAYS out, never a cloudy/rainy day in ANY episodes even if the whole show was on a set at UniversaL?!

In the season 2 episode Boat Builders, Ward does mention they're 20 miles from the ocean.

I believe that they purposely do not say, in order to establish an "Everywhere USA" appeal.
Still I think the writers, living in California, occasionally let a Freudian slip get through in the script.... taking a boat to Alaska, Aunt Martha flying way out west to visit them, Living 20 miles, or 20 minutes from the ocean (whichever it was)....Surfboards,...Never seeing even a single snow shovel in any of the garage scenes....no snow men...no snowball fights. No winter coats.
You just know if that show had been set anywhere that snowballs were common, there would have been at least one episode featuring a disgruntled Judy Hensler's father on the Cleaver front porch demanding to know what Ward intends to do to correct his son's misdeeds. etc.

Including the series creators I count 48 writers for the series. Seems a lot of diverse hints to Mayfield's location that contradicted each other.

I don't believe there was a snowball's chance in Cleveland that the show was based in Ohio...:groucho

Sorta like tea leaves, I suppose. People see in them what they prefer to see.
The multiple references to surfboards is pretty tough to reconcile away, IMO.
I've seen waves on Lake Erie that were big enough to surf, but not in weather you'd want to be wearing a bathing suit.

Recently on YouTube someone from Ohio commented that he watched the original run of the show growing up and noticed that many of the names and references were from the particular area in Ohio where he lived, including Mayfield, Friends Lake, etc. There was even a real woman named Miss Landers.
