View Full Version : What are your top five "comfort" shows?
RetroGuy2000 06-16-2021, 01:11 AM In another thread, Wawwie made an observation tonight that I thought was a good one:
Golden Girls is one of my all time favorite shows, too. Even with all of the many inconsistencies and Rose's endlessly irritating stupidity, it will always be a favorite. Oh, and I don't like Sophia at all, not even a little bit. I only really like Dorothy and Blanche. Still, it brings me a cozy feeling and I adore the show.
So, here's a question: what are five of the "coziest" shows? The shows that give you a comforting feel when you watch them, or just feel like comfort food? The shows that make you feel relaxed and warm. The shows that make you feel better, no matter what your day's been like.
TVLegend 06-16-2021, 01:20 AM I don’t know about TOP five, but here are five comfort shows of mine:
The Golden Girls
Mama’s Family
Reba
Everybody Hates Chris
Murder, She Wrote
One Day At a Time
Hot in Cleveland
Cafe Americain
Touched By An Angel (but only seasons 8 and 9)
Sydney (don’t have this one though :( )
Honorable mention—— Hungry, if that show ever goes anywhere

Oh boy, do I know how comforting watching Valerie Bertinelli is for you, opus.

Holy moly, you’re right, Valerie is in all those! Just a coincidence

RetroGuy2000 06-16-2021, 02:59 AM Some really good answers, here.
Here are mine:
1. The Facts of Life - The first six seasons, anyway. Once Edna's Edibles burns to the ground, it's definitely not as cozy. But whether it's the cozy dorm with the beautiful grandfather clock with the celestial face; the soothing warmth of the larger cafeteria; or the quichey goodness of the bakery, this was one homey show. I've tried baking some of the food shown in the first six seasons, but it's just not the same. Except the Mystery Meat. I didn't even attempt that one.
2. The Golden Girls - Just the music between scenes is very relaxing and homey. What was that? A harp? I have no idea. And the cheesecake!
3. Diff'rent Strokes - At least the earlier years.
4. Friends - Watching it takes me back to my own large apartment in a small city around the same time, when my job was a joke, I was broke, and my love life was beyond DOA. I could go home and watch six people who were my friends on the other side of the glass.
5. I'm reserving this one until I see more answers, and decide to steal someone else's answer! I almost stole Oh Nuts' answer of Bewitched, as it's one of my earliest memories, but there might be a better answer.
RetroGuy2000 06-16-2021, 03:04 AM I don’t know about TOP five, but here are five comfort shows of mine:
The Golden Girls
Mama’s Family
Reba
Everybody Hates Chris
Murder, She Wrote
I definitely get a great cozy feeling from GG, for sure.
I love Murder She Wrote, but have always believed that Jessica Fletcher framed all of those people. How else do we explain how the murder rate suddenly explodes in the area, whether she's in Cabot Cove, Maine, or New York City?
RetroGuy2000 06-16-2021, 03:06 AM One Day At a Time
Hot in Cleveland
Cafe Americain
I got to the third item on the list when I started noticing a pattern.:lol::lol::lol:
RetroGuy2000 06-16-2021, 03:10 AM Little House On the Prairie
I thought about adding this one, but decided against it. The later years were so violent. "May We Bake Them Brown" and the Mime episode are examples of absolute nightmare fuel.

I have only vague memories of St. Elsewhere, but TZ sure is a classic. My favorite episode is the glasses episode.

I HATED Albert in the "May We Make Them Proud" episode. I thought Charles should have just let him go when he ran away. Before that when he brought Mary the music box, I wanted to slap him and I don't know how Jonathan and Andy were able to even look at him after that. He's just the main reason that Alice and Mary's baby burned to death. How could Andrew stay friends with that turd? I never liked Albert. He was such an obnoxious brat. Good to know that he was pure fiction unlike the real Ingalls children like Laura, Mary, Carrie and Grace. I also didn't care for the other fakes like James and Cassandra. Nancy Oleson was fun to watch even though she was a horrible child and a total witch like Harriet. I loved LHOTP up until Laura and Almanzo married. Oh, another one I didn't care for was Almanzo's niece, Jenny played by Shannon Doherty.

LHOTP had its twists and turns…but so many classic scenes…like those where Laura really gives it to Nellie!

Yeah, once they got into the Fake Children, the show Jumped the Shark, for sure. I don't know why they added so many fake members of the Ingalls and Wilder families when there were actual real relatives they could have added.
Of course, this isn't to say LH couldn't be "comfort food", IMO: those first four seasons were classics.

I wasn’t enamored when the show took this turn; still it has a lot of great eps.
Long running shows will almost certainly have their peaks and valleys, and sometines a permanent one can cause tge show to JTS.
With one of my favorite shows, The Adv. of O & H, it was the Tiger eps with those small boys. Never cared for them as they always seemed to feature more prominently than usual. Since I never thought he was all that as an actor, it added to these eps lack of appeal for me. Although the one cute note, was seeing a VERY VERY young Barry Livingston. While I loved him as Ernie on M3S, I could have lived without him here, after seeing him as a Tiger once.

The Blind School storyline was interesting. So, actually, was Winoka. But then Mary married some dude, 12-year-old Carrie started wetting herself in broad daylight, and the poor-as-dirt Ingalls family acquired three orphans when they couldn't afford the four daughters they already had. The burning blind school, the baby battering ram, the Mime Rape, the morphine addition... The show became unwatchable.

Two wonderful "modern classics"! I watched KoQ every day in 2005-2006 because my TV only received a few local stations, and one channel ran 6 back-to-back episodes of KoQ every day.

Absolutely! (While we're at it, I should also mention how funny I find Lauren Lane/C.C. I found a recent article about her (https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3xxqy/what-happened-to-cc-babcock-from-the-nanny-lauren-lane). They were polar opposites, and that worked very well).

I can separate the man Bill Cosby from the tv show character Heathcliff Huxtable. I have a lot of good memories from watching the Cosby Show growing up. Plus, I enjoy the rest of the cast outside of Bill Cosby's character.

Christopher 06-17-2021, 05:29 AM 1. The Facts of Life - This is the first show I became a fan of. I have so many fond memories watching reruns on local channels with my great grandmother and then USA.
2. Desperate Housewives - This show gets labeled a drama, but it has tons of comedy in every episode. I love seeing shows about people you wouldn't expect to be friends become friends and eventually treat each other like family.
3. Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Mainly because I have a lot of fun memories attached to this show watching it during its first run on The WB and then UPN. This is the first new show during its time that I was a huge fan of and watched from beginning to end.
4. Supernatural - Just like Buffy, I have a lot of fun memories attached to this show as well watching it during its first run from beginning to end on The WB and then The CW. This show followed Buffy's format of having a great balance of drama, horror, and comedy thrown in each episode.
5. Maude - I love Bea Arthur in this show. She's not overacting like she does in The Golden Girls and is likeable in this one. The cast has excellent chemistry. It didn't overrun its course and stayed funny IMO throughout its entire run.
Honorable mentions:
Reba - I started rewatching the show awhile ago and forgot how good it was. I definitely prefer the early seasons though.
The Nanny - I started watching the DVD set I bought when it was released. I had never seen all of seasons 1 and 2 until recently. It's a good little comedy.
Mama's Family - I definitely prefer seasons 1 and 2 over the syndication years but there's still some fun moments in those seasons.
RetroGuy2000 06-17-2021, 05:43 AM 1. The Facts of Life - This is the first show I became a fan of. I have so many fond memories watching reruns on local channels with my great grandmother and then USA.
It's so cool that you have those special memories watching with your great grandmother! And of course it would then feel like comfort food.
3. Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Mainly because I have a lot of fun memories attached to this show watching it during its first run on The WB and then UPN. This is the first new show during its time that I was a huge fan of and watched from beginning to end.
It was definitely something special. groundbreaking, for sure. I don't get a 'cozy' feeling, except maybe in Season 5, when the Summers family numbers three.

It's the memories of watching it when it was new that makes it cozy for me. But there's a lot of comedy and special moments of friendship that can make it cozy. Plus the mother's love Joyce has for her child no matter what is comforting :)

I'm in agreement that Season 1 of Gilligan's Island wasn't as good as 2 and 3 ! ;)Originally in black and white , didn't capture the pretty vibrant colors of the island ! Than they colorized Season 1, and not a very good job of it IMO .
And the storylines weren't as funny. It really seemed to pick up more and be funnier by Season 2 ! I mean there were some good eps.in Season 1 , "The Surfer "ep.and the "Japanese sailor" were great but the rest IMO were just mediocre ! ;)
Oh and I like the second version( Seasons 2 and 3) of the opening theme song better too !;)

Bonniegirl 06-17-2021, 05:40 PM Well, "...and the rest" was crazy.
I know , as if there were like 10 more people not just two !! :D How hard was it to just add " The professor and Mary Ann" to the song ? :D
And the first version although they had nice singing voices , it was too mellow ! Would have been great if it was just advertising a tour that didn't end in a ship wreck ! The second version , the voices being really deep and powerful, capture the mood of the ship wreck more !! ;)
RetroGuy2000 06-17-2021, 05:52 PM I know , as if there were like 10 more people not just two !!
Exactly!

Though I haven't seen its entire run yet (31 series, just made it to 19) Last Of The Summer Wine. Both pleasant to watch.
RetroGuy2000 06-18-2021, 08:48 PM Leave It To Beaver
King Of Queens (along with Leave It To Beaver I can watch most any episode and never tire of it)
The Waltons
Gilligan's Island (and that includes season 1 as some of my favorite episodes are from that season. Plus, I really like how there's a continuing story line early in the season with them settling in on the island)
Red Dwarf (especially the early series/seasons)
The Waltons definitely feels like comfort watching, and I feel like it never got gruesome the way Little House did, in its later years.
RetroGuy2000 06-18-2021, 08:51 PM Bewitched
The Donna Reed Show
I Dream of Jeannie
The Munsters
The Jetsons
Also Gilligan's Island, The Brady Bunch, Wonder Woman, Lost in Space, Jonny Quest, The Flintstones, Josie & the Pussycats, HR Pufnstuf, Gidget, The Wild Wild West, Batman, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Andy Griffith, Mary Tyler Moore, The Monkees, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Scooby Doo Where Are You?, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, The Mickey Mouse Club, Zorro, The Rifleman, Leave it to Beaver, i Love Lucy, The Bob Newhart Show, The Bugs Bunny Show, Star Trek, The Judy Garland Show, Dark Shadows, Knots Landing
That's quite the list!
I just vaguely remember Pufnstuf. I adored it, but I was so young the episodes are just at the periphery of my memory.
I did recently re-watch some of the Wild Wild West episodes, and they have grown on me.
RetroGuy2000 06-18-2021, 08:53 PM Yeah!! Mary Ann would have gotten an inferiority complex, she would really feel like the unwanted stepchild ! :( At least her and the professor could feel rejected together !!
Oh, yes. I'm very glad there were two of them dealing with that stupidity.
1960'sTVfan 06-19-2021, 01:04 AM I'm into drama shows lately and I don't consider dramas as "comfort" shows. I like quite a few 1960's sitcoms and those could be described as "comfort" shows. Shows like Get Smart, Gomer Pyle USMC, Joey Bishop Show, The Lucy Show, The Flintstones, that's a list of five.
icecream 06-19-2021, 12:30 PM The Waltons definitely feels like comfort watching, and I feel like it never got gruesome the way Little House did, in its later years.I definitely prefer The Waltons to Little House any day. However, final two seasons of The Waltons are terrible. Rose replacing Olivia was a terrible downgrade, John-Boy and Curt never should have been recast (Curt should have stayed dead, more honorable than what they did with his character), and I hated the episode where it was revealed Ike had committed adultery. Only good parts of those seasons were Cindy's addition and Elizabeth's thicker head of hair.

Roseanne - The Conners
They are the same type of sitcom, the 'working class' where the drama part is as important as the funny one.
Seeing the characters struggling with everyday life issues kinda makes me feel connected with them, it is warming and also reassuring.
Frasier
Mainly for its sophisticated irony. It is impossible not to enjoy it.
The Nanny
It was the most popular sitcom in Italy when I grew up.
Incredibily funny, and when nostalgia kicks in it really brings back memories.
Gilmore Girls
Picket Fences
The small town with quirky characters, places where I want to escape to from time to time.
1. The Andy Griffith Show
2. Laverne & Shirley
3. Green Acres
4. Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.
5. Bewitched
Merry24 06-19-2021, 01:27 PM The Brady Bunch (Especially early seasons)
Leave It To Beaver (Especially early seasons)
Dennis the Menace (Joesph Kearns episodes)
Newhart
the middle. (Before college episodes especially)
1960'sTVfan 06-20-2021, 10:28 AM Leave It To Beaver and Green Acres are good selections, along with Mister Ed and The Patty Duke Show. I also consider these as "comfort" shows.
BigManMike 06-20-2021, 10:57 AM Too Close for Comfort is definitely a great comfort show. It even has “comfort” in the title!
Crusinforabrusin2.5 06-23-2021, 10:03 PM Sanford and Son
The Golden Girls
Ghost Adventures
Seinfeld
Frasier
These are my go to favorites and they are great to watch whenever it's rainy or just an overall crappy day

I never watched the Replacement John-Boy years. The replacement didn't work for me.

I enjoyed the first four on your list of six. I loved the first eight seasons of the original Roseanne, and have definitely found comfort in watching The Conners. Frasier and The Nanny were wonderful as well. I never watched Gilmore Girls or Picket Fences, but I know the critics liked them.

Laverne and Shirley was hilarious. Bewitched is such a classic. I'm not a fan of most "canned laughter" shows, but I can see where they can bring many comfort.

Leave it to Beaver and The Brady Bunch sure feel like comfort shows to me. Newhart was hilarious. I just recently rewatched the "Seeing Double" episode of Newhart, and it is as funny then as it is now.

Patty Duke is wonderful. I enjoyed going to my relatives' homes just for the cable TV so I could watch The Patty Duke Show, and other Nick at Nite classics.
RetroGuy2000 06-24-2021, 02:39 AM Too Close for Comfort is definitely a great comfort show. It even has “comfort” in the title!
Good one! :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Oh yeah. On a crappy day, you just want something familiar and maybe nostalgic with which to envelop yourself. I was never a big Seinfeld watcher, but Frasier and The Golden Girls were definitely shows I watched.
