Mark your calendars for this one. If it's anything like their excellent The Story of Late Night, it will be worth checking out.
Dr. Thong 07-09-2021, 07:04 PM I will definitely be checking this out...!

RetroGuy2000 07-09-2021, 07:08 PM Looking forward to it! They say Mindy, Lisa, Kim, and Julie Pie will represent The Facts of Life. Awesome!
DJM77 07-09-2021, 08:00 PM I'd really like to see this. I wonder if it'll end up on Hulu.

You don't get CNN?
TVLegend 07-09-2021, 09:06 PM Sounds interesting; I plan on tuning in Sunday night.
I'd really like to see this. I wonder if it'll end up on Hulu.CNN documentaries usually end up on HBO Max.
They should be on the CNN Go app as well, but you probably need a cable company.

When you said "Julie Pie," I thought it was a nickname...and then it hit me!
;)
Dr. Thong 07-10-2021, 11:28 AM Fingers crossed they call Good Times a spin-off of Maude…
Even if someone associated with the show says it, the naysayers won't believe it.
After all, it's CNN, right...?
;)
RetroGuy2000 07-10-2021, 11:43 AM When you said "Julie Pie," I thought it was a nickname...and then it hit me!

Julie Pie is the nickname Kim Fields used to call Julie Piekarski. She still calls her that; it's in Kim's book, and you will sometimes see her call her Julie Pie in interviews. Because there were two Julies on the set, there had to be a way to distinguish them by name: Julie Anne and Julie Pie.
Julie Pie has stated she'll be in this project; Julie Anne has not, although I'm hopeful: both Julies and Felice did the Reelz documentary last year, so there's a chance.
merlinjones 07-10-2021, 11:52 AM I suspect this endeavor will seek mainly to (re?)contextualize the sitcom through a singular socio-political lens. It won't be about dreaming of Jeannie.

Indeed, that's why I'm not even going to bother looking at it.
It will be just like those other CNN cultural 'documentary' efforts. Zero attention to actual aesthetics, from genuine comedic wit in the writing, quality of performances and adherence to successful archetypes, nor elements of editing/production-styles to help cultivate the humor. Nope. Everything will be graded and evaluated on how much a sitcom went against societal norms, and attacked the so-called 'status quo.' That's the only way things get (positively) judged nowadays, especially in regards to relics of the past. Not on quality, talent, or aesthetics, but how 'subversive' something can be seen towards the era it emanated from. It's gaggingly predictable.
DJM77 07-10-2021, 02:45 PM You don't get CNN?
No, I don't have cable or satellite anymore. I might go to my parent's house to watch some of it, but I probably won't get to see as much of it as I want to because I have to get up very early for work the next morning and I won't have any way to record it.
EDIT: It looks like I have CNN on Pluto.
TVFactFan 07-10-2021, 11:20 PM Is it going to be a reairing? It comes on the same time as the game

I had a big crush on Felice back when the show was on.
And she has aged very well and has done very well for herself.
RetroGuy2000 07-11-2021, 11:03 AM I had a big crush on Felice back when the show was on.
I can see why: Felice was gorgeous. She had been a model before Facts.
I was so young, though, that my crush was on Julie Anne/Cindy.
And she has aged very well and has done very well for herself.
She really has. Working with special needs students at inner-city schools was her passion. She's truly an inspiration.

It's funny that you mention this, because it is exactly what I was thinking after considering that CNN is a pretty unusual source for such a program. Their trademark "spin" will doubtlessly be part of the equation.
I'm already making a mental list of the "milestone" episodes that I expect they will laud as historic.
TVFactFan 07-11-2021, 09:30 PM its been on 20 min and already two commercial breaks:confused: And they are only discussing the FAMILY SITCOMS from each decade that had kids in the household. Which means the title of the series is misleading unless they will do another segment on other sitcoms. And it appears it will be a commercial break every 10 mins.
I had low expectations and I was right. Garbage

Yeah, 'cause The Jeffersons dealt a lot with Lionel & Jenny's marriage, plus the in-laws, the Willis'. They should have mentioned What's Happening, a single mom dealing with raising her teenage son and her pre-teen daughter. Very surprising about Diff'rent Strokes not being mentioned since it's all about a blended family. Maybe they will eventually mention those ones.
TVFactFan 07-11-2021, 10:12 PM So it appears that the first two eps was tonight
Family Sitcom and Sex and the Sitcom.

TVLegend 07-11-2021, 10:37 PM What did you think of Sex and the Sitcom portion?
In my opinion, so far, it’s okay. Very preachy, but I guess it’s always preachy when someone’s speaking on the subject.
TVFactFan 07-11-2021, 10:40 PM What did you think of Sex and the Sitcom portion?
I turned it off Pav, too many commericals
DEH55 07-12-2021, 12:53 PM I thought they were ok. They talked about the Cosby Show but sadly the memories of that show have been ruined because of what Cosby did. And it reminded everyone how homophobic and sexist Three's Company was.
GentlemanJim 07-12-2021, 04:53 PM And they are only discussing the FAMILY SITCOMS from each decade that had kids in the household.
Did they mention any specific episodes of the Dick Van Dyke show?
I saw both of the episodes on demand and I thought that they were good.

RetroGuy2000 07-12-2021, 07:57 PM Well, that sucks.
RetroGuy2000 07-12-2021, 08:02 PM I have enjoyed both episodes, but did they have to use so much foul language in the sex episode? I was surprised by the F-bombs and other similar terms.
It's been good to see Kim Fields, Pamela Adlon, Geri Jewell, and Norman Lear. Not so pleasant to see (Warren Littlefield.) No sign of any Lost Girls yet, but I'm still hopeful!

Yep. It's crazy. And there's no reason they couldn't have censored the clip they showed.
Coffeecup 07-14-2021, 09:53 AM I am not keen on swearing either but sadly that's the way society is going. I do wish things were turn back a little. Many tv shows aren't geared toward the family. The worst Hoss Cartwright said was "dad god darn it" , Something like that. I do wonder how the actors and actress feel about language, sex and odd situations. Todays tv bothers me for I am so into tv from 1950-to about mid 1980s. As for the CNN program it was better than I expected although I did DVR it On a scale I'd give it 5 out of 10.

The Monkees did an episode where they addressed network censorship.
In "The Devil And Peter Tork," they have fun with the fact you couldn't say "hell" on TV by saying it several times and overdubbing the "hells" with a cuckoo clock sound.
It probably brought more attention to the then-curse word than if they'd actually just said it once or twice.
A few years later, it would be a moot point, as hell would be heard on network shows.
I do agree, however, that profanity and sexuality is used too much in today's shows.
TUNE IN 07-18-2021, 04:15 PM Wait, they're only showing one new installment tonight preceded by one from last week? Looks like the same will happen next week.

Don Lemon reviews the most popular TV theme songs in history with Gary Portnoy of "Cheers", Christopher Knight from "The Brady Bunch", Fran Drescher from "The Nanny", and composer Kurt Farquhar.

Don Lemon reviews the most popular TV theme songs in history with Gary Portnoy of "Cheers", Christopher Knight from "The Brady Bunch", Fran Drescher from "The Nanny", and composer Kurt Farquhar.I’ll be watching. I hope they don’t shy away from the real reason broadcast TV shows don’t have theme songs these days: the fact that half-hour sitcoms have shrunk from 26 minutes to under 22 minutes to make room for more commercials.
Oh, that theme song special was lame as hell. They used re-recordings of many of the songs they featured, including a version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air performed by someone other than, y’know, The Fresh Prince. I assume it’s from some TV theme song compilation CD.

I usually watch him every night. I’m used to him being corny, but I didn’t like the special at all. The worst part was when he made poor Christopher Knight sing the Brady Bunch theme.

It costs money to license music....big bucks.
This is why commercials frequently use re-recorded songs.
It's far cheaper to pay the copyright holders for the songwriting rights and just redo it.
Coffeecup 08-05-2021, 09:58 PM I have seen the Where have all the Themes songs gone and a few of the History of the Sitcom. It's like a confession that their own core product is stale, and in need of redefinition.
Even in retail, long established merchants will see a new guy have success with an uncommon or fresh idea, and a week later everybody else is copying it. I still think it is funky that MTV and VH1 have movies.
Grass is always greener, I suppose.
