They'd just lost their eldest child and only son Brian in the Vietnam War. They were grieving parents. :(

I think it would've be more strange if they were all happy and dancing around etc

Yeah but it was known that they were depressed before Brian was killed maybe why Winnie was close to her brother Brian.
