(CNN)B.J. Thomas, whose smooth voice made him a country and pop crossover success, died Saturday of complications from lung cancer, his publicist said. He was 78.
Thomas first came to prominence with a cover of the Hank Williams standard "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," spending 13 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. Two years later, he broke into the Top 5 with "Hooked on a Feeling," a song written by his childhood friend, Mark James.
A movie soundtrack propelled Thomas to superstardom in 1970. He was chosen to perform the Burt Bacharach and Hal David number "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" for the film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," punctuating a memorable scene in which Paul Newman and Katharine Ross ride a bicycle together. It was Thomas' first No. 1 hit.
Despite continued chart success, Thomas fell into a spiral of substance abuse, which he ended after becoming a born-again Christian in 1976. That life change also prompted a transition into gospel music, and he won a Dove Award for his album "Home Where I Belong." All five of his Grammy wins were for religious-themed songs.
Thomas had multiple hits on the country charts in the 1980s and is also remembered for singing the theme from the sitcom "Growing Pains" (with Jennifer Warnes), which debuted in 1985.
"This is devastating news," tweeted Joe Bonsall of the country and gospel group The Oak Ridge Boys. "I so loved and respected this man."
Thomas announced in March that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The Oklahoma native died at his home in Arlington, Texas, his publicist said in a statement.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gloria, and three daughters.

OH Nuts! 05-30-2021, 04:24 PM So sorry to hear of his passing. I’ve always enjoyed his music and been touched by his deep religious faith. Amongst other things, he’s left us a lot of beautiful music to remember him by. May he R.I.P.
Edward216 05-31-2021, 12:07 AM Wow that's sad news. I always liked B.J. Thomas and he was a man who tried to live out his faith in his life. I also loved his song (Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.

Hawkee 05-31-2021, 03:31 AM I knew of Hooked On A Feeling because it was one of Star Lord's songs featured in Guardians Of The Galaxy and Blue Swede covered it and I actually perfer that version over B.J. Thomas's version because it's fun. I do remember Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head because I had heard the Kidz Bop version of it and I think it is a wonderful song. I wonder if Marvel will show the clip of Guardians Of The Galaxy where Star Lord dances to Hooked On A Feeling to honor B.J. Thomas. Of course I remember hearing As Long As We Got Each Other with B.J. solo and with Jennifer Warnes from Growing Pains and I wonder what version came first the solo version or the duet version?

Ditto. Love his stuff too.
Always enjoyed his music, especially Mighty Clouds of Joy. May he rest in peace.
Hawkee 06-02-2021, 02:32 AM Did you know that B.J. Thomas did a cover of Tom Jones's It's Not Unusual? I heard it yesterday and his version is fun than Tom Jones's version. B.J. also sang Hey Girl and his version is a lot like Billy Joel's version

ABlairican Pie 06-03-2021, 10:07 PM At first, I was never really a fan of the music of B.J. Thomas. In 1976, I was discovering the music of Black Sabbath and was about to find things heavier, so I had no use, at the time, for "Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song". But that all changed in the 80's when I learned about his conversion to Christianity and deliverance from hard drugs. It was impressive. At the same time, in 1984, I also found out that his newfound epiphany into Christian music brought with it a series of headaches: CCM fans would not let him sing the songs that made him famous in the first place, they all wanted him to remain in the "Gospel" fold. This became a frustrating experience for him, and he did not conduct himself well.
But to listen to his songs, particularly in the Christian market, was an epiphany for me. He had a soulful voice, and his pain, and hope, was tangible. He was an amazing singer. He was not perfect, as so many Christian convert performers were expected to be, but that made him all the more believable.
Particularly touching was "You Gave Me Love When No One Gave Me a Prayer".
Edison 06-03-2021, 11:41 PM Big fan for many years. Just played "Rock and Roll Lullaby". Just another of his wonderfully done right songs.
Zoneboy 08-03-2021, 01:02 AM Found a box of 35 or so CD's today at the dumpster including this one. There was also a best of CD signed by him, but it was personalized and missing the disc.
JO Sweet Heart 08-03-2021, 04:32 AM ^^^ Did you really find that in a dumpster or is your saying that just your way of saying that you were at a store that has vintage things for sale?
God bless you and B.J.'s family always!!!

I found the CD's at the trash site, but they weren't actually in the dumpster. Our county has 12 trash/recycling centers and each has an area called swap shop where people can leave items they no longer need or want, but don't want to throw in the dumpster. Everything in the swap shop is free and on a first come, first serve basis. It's so popular that they have a limit of 2 visits per-day and you only have 15 minutes each time.
JO Sweet Heart 08-03-2021, 12:23 PM ^^^ That is interesting. Thank you for sharing. :) :) :)
God bless you always!!!

P.S. I wouldn't know how to price anything that I am willing to part with which is why I would most likely just go to a place like that and drop off what I no longer want. That is actually why I have never tried to sell anything at Ebay.
