The second best show on NBC's 1990s Must See TV lineup is making a triumphant return tomorrow.
Personal "Seinfeld" allegiances aside, "Friends" was one of the most influential television shows in history, and there are legions of fans excited for HBO Max's "Friends: The Reunion," which premieres tonight at midnight.
During the original run of the series from 1994 to 2004, "Friends" was known for a host of celebrity cameos. Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and many more made appearances, but perhaps the biggest surprise guests — at least to the producers of the show — were Billy Crystal and Robin Williams.
According to Screenrant (https://screenrant.com/friends-robin-williams-cameo-explained/#:~:text=Williams%20played%20a%20character%20named,series%20was%20a%20huge%20deal.), Williams and Crystal were never actually written into the script for the season three episode "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion." The pair were simply on a neighboring film set and randomly strolled over to the area where "Friends" was shooting. Naturally, the writers of the show jumped at the chance to enlist the pair of A-list comedians and invited them to join in the show's opening scene without giving them any direction.
The improvised bit involves Williams and Crystal crowding onto the couch at the Central Perk café alongside the "Friends" cast, then diving into a very personal conversation about Williams' suspicions that his wife is cheating on him. Matt LeBlanc and Courtney Cox reportedly played along with the bit, adding a few ad-libbed lines of their own.
In another stroke of lucky timing, the episode aired the day before the release of "Fathers' Day," starring Crystal and Williams. Watch the full clip below.
