View Full Version : More examples of Sophia being mean, evil, cruel or ignorant
Wawwie 05-24-2021, 09:09 PM 1. Making fun of Blanche's overweight daughter, Becky. Sophia asks if she models car covers.
2. In the "Sick & Tired" episode, Sophia is extremely ignorant when she stereotypes Dorothy's Chinese doctor over and over again.
3. Lying to and causing major troubles with neighbors Barbara & Carol Weston so they would argue and she could satisfy some ridiculous curse.
Those are just a few more examples of why I despise Sophia.
Wawwie 05-24-2021, 09:21 PM Here's a few more reasons to despise the "raisin in sneakers" or "deceitful little sea monkey."
Convincing the dim-witted Rose that her dead husband's spirit was communicating through her body.
In the episode where Sophia is losing her memories, she travels back to Brooklyn with Dorothy to visit their old apartment. When a Hispanic man opens the door and says "Buenos Dios" Sophia responds with "OH GOD." Dorothy immediately puts her hand over Sophia's mouth.
I could go on and on about why I loathe Sophia.

LOL. You better be careful…or she’ll give you the evil eye.
(She certainly was a feisty old cuss)

I'm not scared, 'cuz like the paper boy said, she's just "a mean old lady."
TVLegend 05-24-2021, 09:42 PM She was definitely not innocent, but she was no devil incarnate.

I heard she had a hot and torrid affair with Don Corleone in the 20s and Carmella almost put a hit on her! LOL

Don't forget about her hot & heavy affair with Pablo Picasso!

Actually I wasn’t mad at Sophia in this episode at all. It was quite hilarious to see Rose act like a stupid jackass.

Just curious, do you prefer earlier season Sophia over later season Sophia or do you have a problem with the character regardless?

Could you imagine having a mother like her? I wouldn’t know what to do with her.

She was a terrible mother to Dorothy... always making fun of her, lying to her as a child and as an adult, favoring Gloria, dumping Phil and his family all because his wife's dowry check bounced. Sophia was just a horrible person, not evil but horrible, cruel, selfish, ignorant and mean, mean, mean.

Who knows…maybe her parents did similar things to her and she took it out on her kids. Or maybe Salvador was beating her and forcing her to be the horrible, cruel, selfish, ignorant, and mean woman she was. I guess we’ll never know.
So were there NO Sophia moments that you found at least a little funny?

Only one that I can think of... it's when Rose is talking about her large breasts and how she developed early and she says: "You wouldn't believe how many people think I'm dumb just because I'm built this way." And Sophia says: "Rose, you don't give yourself enough credit. I know people who think your dumb over the phone."

That was a funny one.
I assume you weren’t fond of the moment when Sophia insulted Ham’s (Blanche’s overweight old lover) weight or whenever Sophia would basically call Blanche a big slut.

Yeah, she said Ham was short for Ham and potatoes. I never thought she was funny except for that Rose moment I mentioned. My favorite was always Dorothy. I did think Blanche was a bit trampy but I did like her. Rose, I found to be mind numbingly dumb but nice and I despised Sophia. So I only really liked two of them. Dorothy and Blanche. Who was your favorite?

Dorothy was my favorite. Then it’s Sophia, then Blanche, and then Rose. Yes, Blanche was trampy. In fact, so trampy that I’d much prefer a woman like Dorothy over her, looks and personality.
Speaking of Sophia, could you imagine being in a hospital for a checkup with a woman like Sophia sitting right next to you? She’d probably be laughing and making fun of every patient as they get called into the room. She also probably wouldn’t hesitate to try and meddle into your personal life either. And not to mention, she would probably top off her disgusting and inappropriate behavior by trying to hold a rather racist and ignorant conversation with you about Chinese people and their eyes or Black people and their love for fried chicken or how the “colored folks are causing a downfall to our country”. Wouldn’t it be fun? :p
BestTVever 03-20-2023, 05:06 AM I do agree that Sophia was mean to Blanche's daughter. In syndication, this is cut out but is in the DVD episode where Blanche gets Dorothy a job at the museum. Sophia shows up at the museum and asks Dorothy if he was gay and gets laughs. Ironically, the actor who played the boss was gay. However he was not playing a gay character. Asking if he was gay was just a punchline.
How about when Sophia sold Dorothy's ticket to see the pope. But the cruelest Sophia was IMHO was when Phil died and how evil Sophia was to his wife. Even a mean Sophia, this seemed extreme and out of character.
Like all the characters, I prefer the earlier seasons. The last few seasons, they turned into caricatures of their former selves.
just1paul 03-21-2023, 02:22 AM Is everyone forgetting that Sophia had a stroke and had no filters?
TVLegend 03-31-2023, 09:47 PM The lowest Sophia moment for me was when she was trying to help Rose sleep by knocking her unconscious with a pot. That was just too much and a bit hard to watch.
Wawwie 03-31-2023, 11:45 PM Is everyone forgetting that Sophia had a stroke and had no filters?
Lame excuse. Sophia was always mean, long before the stroke. She was mean to Phil's wife from the very beginning, when her dowry check bounced so she disowned Phil and his entire immediate family. Nice try at rationalizing but the truth is that Sophia was always a mean and wicked hag years before her stroke. More examples: when Dorothy was a child, she lied about her paper bird turning into a real, live pet and then used the paper bird to fix the oven pilot light. She lied to Dorothy about her prom date showing up and how she chased him away. For decades she let Dorothy believe that the boy just stood her up. She was always mean. There's much more like favoring Gloria, etc. I could go on and on.

You better watch out. A 118 year old ghost Sophia will come back and haunt you for bad mouthing her.
