When Jack Coleman took over the role of Steven in the third season, the reason for his change in appearance was attributed to the fact that Steven was aboard an oil rig in Hong Kong that exploded.
Since the plastic surgeon who operated on him didn't know what he looked like, he did the best he could and out came Jack Coleman.
Several years later, on Dynasty: The Reunion, Al Corley took back the role of Steven and no mention was made of the fact that he looked like he did before the oil rig explosion!
In retrospect, it was stupid to have Steven have plastic surgery to explain his appearance; actors are replaced all the time on daytime soaps and no one questions it.
However, it did make for a dramatic reveal, as Steven spent several weeks with his face bandaged up, building the suspense.
