View Full Version : The last season the show ranked #33 and they thought it was a good idea to
TVFactFan 05-21-2021, 08:42 PM do Three's a Crowd? Three's a Crowd ratings was almost the same as the last three's company at #38. It is strange that three's a crowd didnt get renewed for a full season when it wasn't that much lower than the last season of TC

There are many factors with respect to ratings. How was the show doing as the season went on (was the show growing an audience, losing viewers as the season wore on). In a sense the show was little more than a reworked version of the original series, the roommates were replaced by his girlfriend and Furley was replaced by his girlfriend's father. ABC switched it to the 8pm hour to see if it would do any better I guess it didn't. It looks like it came down to cost, they offered half a season, Ritter turned it down, I guess Different Strokes was able to put a budget together that worked for the network.

Kind of dumb to move it 8pm right next to A team which was the show that also lowered the ratings for TC. Should have the show air on a new night since it was a new cast and situation

It looks like ABC was focused on hour long shows so there were limited slots available. Who's the Boss actually did better in the 8:30 spot than Three's a Crowd which was the lead-in, that must have raised red flags. Different Strokes was a better fit for the network for the 85-86 tv season, the series fit nicely into the Friday schedule behind Webster at 8pm and
Mr. Belvedere at 8:30.

I always wondered why was #38 a problem after the 1st season and didnt realize it was the lead in for ABC for tuesday nights
biffbronson 05-22-2021, 09:28 AM I was in college in the mid-80s and missed a lot of primetime. I don't remember ever seeing shows like Three's a Crowd, Webster, or Mr. Belvedere until they went into syndication. I did see some Who's the Boss and Diff'rent Strokes, but only their early seasons.

And when I was in college a decade later I would record my favorite shows in primetime while I went to the library. Not sure how expensive VCRS was in 85
biffbronson 05-22-2021, 11:32 AM LOL - that's the time my brother would've just got his Beta machine, but I would rarely get to record stuff I wanted on it... I remember he had me set it to record some Star Trek reruns for him while he was on a trip, but I screwed it up. :(

They should’ve just moved on to new horizons. There was no point of Three’s A Crowd. Who was going to watch?
No Janet
No Terri
No Cindy
No Mr. Furley
No Larry
No Dean Travers
No Mr. Angelino
No show LOL

Before the Internet did you ask wonder about these things?
Why Janet, Mr. Furley, Terri or the Ropers appeared on TAC when they all still lived not that far away. Especially Mr. Furley:lol:

I was 8 when TAC premiered and for me Jack Tripper with his wacky antics was the sole reason to watch that I never questioned why Janet or Mr. Furley never visited Jack's Bistro for a bite at least, although it was cool when Larry showed up.
In just assumed it was natural progression, people grow up get married and move on never to be heard from again.

When I joined this site in summer of 2002, I wondered why Janet never appeared on TAC and then I saw the THS of Three's company and then I found out why. When I just this site, TC was airing on N@N and that was my first time seeing it since 1989 in local syndication. So then I found out it was no way she was appearing on TAC because she was pushed to the side so John Ritter could have his own show lol

I agree because it was connected to Three's company unlike TAC

Which is why I consider Three’s A Crowd a spinoff instead of a continuation because they took a character from another show and carried them to another with new characters and backgrounds instead of picking up where they left off

Wonder how Gary Marshall was able to get his spinoff aired after the Parent show and not the producers of TC. I bet if the ropers aired after tc it would have lasted 3 or 4 years

Because he had been in the business long enough to know that a half of season offer means they are considering cancelling the show so he was probably like......"just end it if you dont have good feelings about it"

Remember, even the producers said Jack Tripper was the star & there was no show without him so THAT is why you do Three's a Crowd.
Although I agree they should've added some TC stars but some didn't want to come like Don Knotts.

I did recently wonder if Three's a Crowd lasted longer, would Joyce DeWitt and Priscilla Barnes eventually made guest appearances. They probably wouldn't since Joyce if I have my facts straight, was not to happy with how the series finale for Three's Company was all but hijacked by the new characters and plotlines from the forthcoming Three's a Crowd. And Priscilla would later state that she really didn't enjoy making Three's Company during the three years that she was there. And these were the same producers from Three's Company that we were dealing with.

On the proposed 1987 revival show "Three Apartments" starring The Ropers, the guest stars listed were John Ritter, Joyce Dewitt, Richard Kline, and Don Knotts.
I was surprised to see Joyce name listed. Maybe she was in a forgiving mood or maybe they had different producers working on the show.

The proposed series was little more than a concept so who knows if Joyce would have actually appeared had it actually sold. She may have received a small promotional consideration for permitting her name to be used.
This came up about a year ago this is what I wrote at that time:
"The spin-off was withdrawn in January 1987 because of a glut of syndicated sitcom offerings, a lack of time slots, and a difficult advertising market". To put it another way, there was not enough interest in the series.
The whole thing was conceived of in the late summer of 86 and dropped four months later. I would imagine that outside of having preliminary talks with Fell and Lindley, and maybe market analysis the show probably died in a meeting room".

Going off the top of my head, I know that 1986-87 already had in first-run syndication (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sitcoms_broadcast_in_first-run_syndication) Small Wonder, It's a Living, What a Country (which incidentally, had Don Knotts as a principal cast member), Mama's Family, What's Happening Now!!, Silver Spoons (which moved over to the first-run syndication market for its final season after NBC dropped it), and Charles in Charge (which just relaunched in syndication following its cancellation by CBS). It would get even bigger or more crowded (https://www.nytimes.com/1988/02/27/business/first-run-syndicators-find-tight-tv-market.html) the following season (https://www.tvobscurities.com/articles/syndicated_1987/).
