i've never heard of nearly half of these. And where are the classics? Any list of 100 that doesn't include Bewitched or Green Acres is easily dismissed.

Agreed. Rolling Stone is the absolute worst with regards to putting ratings/rankings on things. I pay no attention to them whatsoever.

A real and accurate list would have the majority of shows they listed be shows that started during the 1950s, 60s and 70s as being the best. Their list means nothing.

I think the last time I even looked at an issue of Rolling Stone magazine was around 1998.

Everybody's allowed to have an opinion, but I wouldn't consider Rolling Stone an authoritative source either.

Well its just THIER OPINION (Whcih means squat) I liked them the best in the 60s!! (I have several records in MONO from them)

There is much in that list that I disagree with, but I am absolutely astounded that Bob's Burgers placed that much higher than Futurama.

And, while Seinfeld had some brilliant moments, It surprises me that it continues to place so highly in so many polls such as this. To me about 80-90% of the episodes come across as 'filler'.

Taxi and Night Court both seem under rated in that list, and I'd definitely place Barney Miller above Bob Newhart.

Instead of having the integrity to just admit the list was developed for the average Rolling Stone reader (which is someone between the ages of 18-34), the editors misrepresent the project as a list that includes the entire history of sitcoms. We can all mention glaring errors (how in the world do you leave off Leave It To Beaver and list at number 99 Frank's Place!). The shows of the 50's and 60's were producing over 30 episodes a year (Beaver produced 39 episodes a year for 6 seasons), how can you compare that with a show like Curb Your Enthusiasm which has produced 100 episodes in 20 years. The audience levels for many of the newer series listed wouldn't sustain a show of the 50's or 60's for even a month.

Yeah back in those times NBC had those Sitcoms that had (for the most part) bad ratings. They kept them on for the elites on the east and west coast, because they could. But nobody else cared or watched.

Police Squad was hilarious! Even the closing credits (the "Epilogue", which poked fun at all those Quinn-Martin shows with the acts and epilogue) were funny.

The Simpsons number 1? It's another show with lousy ratings; Fox probably keeps it going because it's cheap to produce, with its lousy animation.

And what's all this Channel 4 and BBC 3 stuff? I never heard of those shows. I guess some of their readers are in the UK?

Also in the 1950s Father Knows Best had 20 Emmy nominations and 6 wins in varying categories. Means nothing.

Obviously I don't agree with everything on the list, that's the whole point of lists like this. No one on this forum or anywhere would have the exact same list.

But to say they have no authority is not really accurate. Their lead TV critic is Alan Sepinwall who is widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable in the industry with more of a nod to TV history than a lot of current critics. He's also been doing it for decades (not always at Rolling Stone). So it's cool to disagree, that's the point, but they do have a reputable voice on their staff.

And speaking of kids being secondary, I didn't see Everybody Loves Raymond on there, either. But I saw a whole bunch of sitcoms that probably 90+ percent of people have never heard of. That kind of thing is typical of critics.

Popularity does not equal quality.

I could definitely see an argument for Leave it to Beaver over some of the shows that made the list (though I don't think Beaver is anything special). But just because people haven't heard of it doesn't make it bad.

All of those shows are good besides The Office. 30 Rock is very underrated imo

The one thing I like about this list is that at least Barney Miller and The Bob Newhart Show placed in it-- those are my two favorite comedies of the 70s (have each one in full on DVD-- both are well worth the money).

The Big Dummies had Sanford and Son 80th. 80th out of 100.

Soap is 87th. I just rewatched the series online and it was one of the most original and absolutely hilarious shows ever made.

A bias-free version of this list would not have too much from one era (i.e. pre-Rural Purge or 21st century), and I guess would lean more towards the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I'm afraid there's just no way to compile a "Best of All Time in ANYTHING" list without at least ONE fight/argument/dispute.:(

I wasn't criticizing those shows, just noting that NBC had ratings troubles in those days, and those sitcoms weren't helping much. In general, I have a hard time watching single-camera comedies (with a couple of exceptions), so I haven't even tried to watch those shows. It's just hard for me to get into the "rhythm" of shows like that. I think the general public is similar, as considering the historical success rate (in terms of ratings, not quality) of multi-cam vs. single-cam sitcoms, the multi-cams have had more hits. I don't even knock NBC for keeping those shows on the air, as none of the networks have had a good formula for pumping out successful comedies for most of this century. If NBC's choice was between putting out niche sitcoms that are only cult/critical favorites, producing tired conventional sitcoms that only a few more people were watching, or dumping comedies completely and going only with drama/reality/newsmagazine shows, then I think its decision to keep the cult sitcoms on the air was the best one out of a set of lousy options.

If measured by long-term syndication success, the single camera shows have proved perhaps more durable and timeless (save I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, and Mary Tyler Moore - all filmed 3-camera) - partly because of the filmic appeal? (--see Bewitched, Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeannie, The Brady Bunch, The Munsters, Leave it to Beaver, MASH, Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Hogan's Heroes, Get Smart, The Flintstones, etc. -- the best of these never age).

Norman Lear's staged shows seem somehow more dated in their topicality and use of videotape.

This is NOT my top 10 favorites. There are a few shows on here that I don’t even like. But I’m trying to compile a fair list, which isn’t just shows I love. Only American shows and only live-action. Also, I’m not a snob. I include ALL kinds of sitcoms in here. It’s anything from “M*A*SH” to “Saved by the Bell”.

Well they might have some credence naming musical acts, but regarding the 100 best shows of all time, I think they are way off base!

Adamantium's list is well balanced - I would only change a handful.
