I was watching an ep tonight about the paper route and in the first scene, June has short hair. By the next scene, it has miraculously grown into the Jackie Kennedy flip. What gives?

Hmm, that does sound quite odd. June did have short hair, and it was straight at that. I could see if it was short and curly and she had it straightened it could do the Jackie Flip.

The only thing I can figure out is Barbara decided to grow her hair out, but kept a short hair wig around for the June character. Do you remember a line in the episode about the beauty parlor? That could've been a good line for Barbara to get rid of the wig, and just have her natural hair for the remainder of the show.

Does anybody know if Barbara wore a wig? I know my theory sounds odd, but its the only thing I can think of besides hair extensions. lol- That's kind of odd thinking of June Cleaver wearing hair extensions. lol

Sorry I couldn't help. :(

I noticed the hair thing too! I saw the ep where her hair miraculously grew in about 2 minutes...It was weird how in one episode she has long hair then the next one its short and then in the next one its back to being long again! I know the episode that came on tonight shows June with the short 'do. Her hair looks a lot thicker and bigger like that. I think she had the longer hair and she does wear a wig for the short look. It looks that way anyway.

Actually, I saw the paper route ep again this morning or yesterday and realized that June had her hair up in that first scene. It was a little confusing cause in the opening credit scene she has short hair and in some of the other eps of this final season she alternates between short hair and jackie flip. I was just confused about the hair change within the same ep.:happyface

I'll have to start watching the episodes a little more closely to check out June's hair. I wonder if the reason you see different hair in different scenes is because they film scenes throughout the week, not necessarily in the order shown, and never paid attention tho the fact that Barbara was wearing her hair in different styles.
Speaking of hair, the one thing I have noticed, especially in the earlier episodes, is that Beaver's hair (especially the bangs) will be combed one way and then in the next shot (same scene) the bangs will be different. His bangs were usually messy but not always in the same direction and I think during a break in the scene the stylist must have combed it and changed the look. It is most noticable in the episode "Beaver gets adopted" When he is at the adoption agency talking to the social worker his bangs have a large split in them and when they bring the camera back to Beaver a second later the bangs are combed nicely.
I think its fun to try and notice the inconsistancies in older shows.

Oh, the opening credits were probably done at the beginning of the season so her hair was short and maybe the episodes had big enough gaps where she would have had time to grow her hair, if she has fast growing hair.

Obviously the reason these little inconsistencies can be noticed in the 'older shows' is because most of them, especially from the 60's, used the one-camera method of shooting without a live audience. Therefore scenes did not have to shot in order, and even if they were there might be a long break to touch things up, and similar inconsistencies can still be seen today in some dramatic series. Very often Hugh Beaumont and Barbara Billingsleywere on the set late in the day doing the scenes in which only they appeared, since child labor laws and other regulations limited the times the kids could be working.

My Three Sons is probably the best of the old series to spot little bloopers in hairstyles or prop setups, sometimes even the sizes of the growing kids. Fred MacMurray's demands had to be met as to him completing a season's worth of scenes for which he appeared in 3 months' time; therefore portions of scenes might be shot months apart. If you look closely you can notice that when one of the boys, for instance, walks out of the kitchen in one shot, then through the door to the living room in the next shot, his hair is longer or combed a little different. Also, in parts of the same ep a character may speak in his normal voice; in another he may have nasal congestion. Those things don't happen when an ep is shot in sequence, as has been the general rule about sitcoms since the early 70's, with few exceptions such as MASH and The Wonder Years.

To clear up all this, in the episode in question, June did indeed have her hair up. You can easily see it pinned up. Don't feel bad, I had to look twice too.

As for the opening credits, June had the Jackie O hairdo throughout the entire 5th season and it overlapped into the 6th. They filmed like eight episodes and then Barbara cut her hair short. This was about the time when they filmed the new opening credits.

Throughout the rest of the season, she let her hair grow out again ending with the Jackie O swoop in the final episode.
