View Full Version : Jeannie coming on Blu-ray! You would have to think they would need to master from the original 35mm negatives for HD quality. I don't know enough about the show, but am I correct in thinking that (just like so many other Screen Gems shows) for syndication, they just used the same color opening for all the (color) episodes? I'd also like to think this is a sign of things to come: remastering a lot of these older shows for HD, and "as long as were doing it, let's put it out on Blu-Ray." Also, I wonder if the first season will be on there in black and white, or color, or both. merlinjones 04-28-2021, 07:44 PM I recall reading an article (in the last 10-20 years) that the original camera negative for the animated Jeannie opening was discovered in the vaults of the Depatie-Freling holdings (they animated it) - but I don't know that Sony ever used it or had it to use (theirs is clearly a dupe). I never could find reference to this discovery again. stevea 08-30-2021, 02:42 PM You would have to think they would need to master from the original 35mm negatives for HD quality. Also, I wonder if the first season will be on there in black and white, or color, or both. I've read on Home Theater Forum that the first season will be in black and white, probably because the colorized version is in standard definition. The original show opening seems to be a big concern on there. I'd have to think they'd go the easiest route possible. I've never seen any other opener besides what is on TV now. merlinjones 08-31-2021, 01:49 AM DePatie-Freleng was absorbed into Marvel Animation studio then eventually acquired by Disney with Marvel's purchase, so that's where to look for the original negative reportedly discovered there some years back. kentauros 09-28-2021, 07:06 PM I don't care about the opening sequences. I skip over those anyway. Just give me higher-resolution. That's the most important thing overall :) stevea 09-28-2021, 10:16 PM I recall reading an article (in the last 10-20 years) that the original camera negative for the animated Jeannie opening was discovered in the vaults of the Depatie-Freling holdings (they animated it) - but I don't know that Sony ever used it or had it to use (theirs is clearly a dupe). They keep pushing the release out, so they must be having production problems. I never looked closely enough at the 2 openers I'm familiar with to see if the animation is the same, and that maybe the first opener is just a b/w copy of the color opener used from the second season on. As far as any other openers which might have been used after season 2, my guess is there could have been slight changes to the music and a new copyright year superimposed. I'd have to see it to believe it. However, I never knew there was a theme alteration to the original third season opener of Gilligan's Island till I saw/heard it. This would probably be the first remastering of any Screen Gems color show in the DVD era. To my knowledge the only remaster of any Screen Gems show was the first season of Hazel, in black and white. stevea 09-28-2021, 10:22 PM By the way the release has been bumped out to 11/30/21. cloggedmind 12-03-2021, 03:32 PM I think a lot of people (including myself) are wondering if this will have the correct, restored title sequences of I Dream of Jeannie. And now that it's out, I'm still wondering and have asked on other forums.. but anyone who has it seems more concerned about what the packaging looks like, and how many other shows of the 60s were filmed in color rather than actually watching/evaluating the content of this show. Are the proper title sequences restored for each season? tcr1701 12-03-2021, 04:37 PM And now that it's out, I'm still wondering and have asked on other forums.. but anyone who has it seems more concerned about what the packaging looks like, and how many other shows of the 60s were filmed in color rather than actually watching/evaluating the content of this show. Are the proper title sequences restored for each season? No - it's the same standard theme used on the regular DVD releases and heard in syndication for decades. The end themes are correct for each season, though. The clarity is very good though. In the color episodes you can even see the inner lining of Barbara's harem pants. The only bonus is the "I Dream of Jeannie 15 Years Later" movie. cloggedmind 12-03-2021, 09:11 PM No - it's the same standard theme used on the regular DVD releases and heard in syndication for decades. Thank you for confirming that! kentauros 12-05-2021, 01:52 AM the message board "Home Theater Forum" has a thread on this, with current reviews starting on this page. So far, the consensus is that it's a crappy release and people are not happy with Mill Creek. So, I'll also wait a while to see if complaints have any weight with the company or if they ignore them and stick with a crappy release. https://www.hometheaterforum.com/community/threads/i-dream-of-jeannie-the-complete-series-blu-ray-available-for-preorder.371911/page-11 |
