View Full Version : My Brother Hates Popcorn...! (I Love It)

My brother may be the only person I've ever met who hates popcorn. Won't touch it.

By contrast, I love it unconditionally. I especially like any cheesy kinds. ;)

So as a pressing global concern of immediate urgency, I must know where you stand on the spectrum. If you do eat popcorn, what types do you prefer?

And by the way, I'm sorry if you detect a slight odor of burnt popcorn at my house, where I microwaved a pouch just a bit too long...

Me too. I love love love popcorn and love the buttery and cheese-flavored best. As a diabetic I have to limit the amount of it I eat though. One neat trick I do for these is to sprinkle A LOT of grated parmesan cheese on it; which helps keep me to a cup. But God, without discipline I could eat a great big bag.

I also really love Carmel corn but never have it-that is too sky high in sugar. Even though I haven’t had any in years, I still remember how good it tastes.

There are people who get it stuck in their teeth, real or false.

This is an option only if you can't get to or use a stove.

This is properly classed as candy.

Again, not ideal. Trader Joe makes a pretty good bagged Olive Oil Popcorn.

Really tough to do well.

I agree with you on the Carmel corn, turn over the bag and read the carb counts - often triple that of regular/cheese flavored. I know if I ate carmel corn my blood sugar readings would be sky high.

Obviously fresh made is best. But I love all popcorn, just really FORCE myself to do portion control with it.

Thanks. Being disciplined is not easy; the laundry list of foods you have to severely restrict or eliminate is daunting. And consists of all things yummy ( think comfort food).

But I’ve found some good healthy (and tasty!) alternatives for many things on the list. I’ve also had diabetic friends and acquaintances who refused to watch what they ate and I saw how sick they got.

Love movie theater popcorn with fake butter, but try to avoid it now.

Still like popcorn at home, and we treat ourselves to the occasional popcorn and movies at home with our popcorn popper.

I don't do Microwave too often, I've been watching my sodium intake.*

The teeth problem is one I was aware of. But hating popcorn outright is a little different maybe. I guess too that for some, not being able to eat something can raise the desire for it...!

My niece bought me Garrett's once for Christmas. Good stuff.

Thanks for the Trader Joe's tip, the first of their stores in my area is under construction.

* (edit) I forgot the last time I went to Whole Foods that I've wanted to try their "Organic Microwave Popcorn" with sea salt.

All popcorn is wonderful and I’m glad I can still have it in limited amounts. There’s salt free popcorn out and maybe you could buy a bag of unsalted and lightly salted and make a mix.

I think part of it too, is how we are exposed to it. If it is overtly pushed upon you, it's easy to develop an aversion. For example, while I feel there is nothing wrong about canned whole kernel corn or hotdogs...I always try to avoid them whenever given the choice, just because they are the cheap filler food that has been pushed upon me thousands of times by people hoping to fill me up cheap.

Perhaps your brother was "offered" popcorn as a "healthy snack alternative" too many times, and he resents it?

I enjoy popcorn, maybe 4 times per year, lots of salt and butter

I'm a popcorn lover too. As soon as I walk in a movie theater, I've just got to have it. The smell is so tempting. I also like to buy the white cheddar popcorn by Smartfood.
It's a shame your brother hates popcorn.

I microwave nothing, don't own one of those machines. I make my own popcorn in a saucepan, veggie and coconut oil mix, add some stevia and sea salt and popcorn and pop....I get a lovely kettle corn. I like ALL foods. Just like my mother.

That's a good way. I was just thinking I have a bag of pretzel sticks I don't ordinarily eat very often, I might mix them with some unsalted popcorn (or unsalted peanuts, another favorite). Thanks for the suggestion.

Gentleman Jim, my brother is a strange bird. He was started a little too soon on adult foods as a baby, and had some vomit trouble way back then. Now it seems he enjoys eating most everything with about 3 exceptions: popcorn, nuts/peanuts, and McDonalds. As you might guess, I do like McDonalds food and am "nuts" for nuts. (There are things I still won't touch, like a certain strong garlic sauce that goes with fish on the Greek Palm Sunday.)

Caroline I'm glad you like such a wide food variety. As the Greeks would say, "Na ta ekatostiseis" -- may you live to 100...!

Bonniegirl, your posts reminded me for some reason of when I used to share some popcorn across the kitchen table with my dad. My mom was a little stingy in melting some butter on the stovetop, so my dad and I would eye the same well-coated parts of the bowl. Over 45 years ago now! And that was before we had an air-popper machine.

Thanks for your replies, and also to AB, Zoneboy, Torgo, MISST3, 80sTrivia, & Alan Brady's Hair.

Nuts, you say? Man, I can get seriously over stuffed with a bag of pecans, or walnuts.....or filberts. A neighbor growing up had a black walnut tree in their back yard, and we used to get our hands so filthy dirty getting the husks off the nuts we were eating. But it was WORTH it. Cookies made with black walnuts have no peers, absolutely the best!

When I was a kid we used to buy these bags of pistachio nuts still in shell, where the salt was encrusted on the shell so thick they looked like white jelly beans. Probably horrible for health purposes, but so addictive...I miss them. Now days when they sell you "salted" pistachios they are usually died red, with no sign of the former bounty of salt.

Does your brother like pork rinds? I can put a serious hurt on a bag of pork rinds.

This is far and away my favorite brand and flavor of bagged popcorn!

I also really like the popcorn at the local independent movie theater, because they actually use real butter and not the butter-flavored oil. Unfortunately, they are "temporarily" shut down due to Covid. I really hope they can last!

It truly is sad! I really love this theater. It only has three screens and usually shows independent and rare films the big theaters don't get. They also did really cool "Midnight Movies" where they would play classics on Friday and Saturday nights at midnight.

Unfortunately the business closed, but I used to love going to the Brooklyn Popcorn truck when I spotted it around Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan.

I loved their roasted caramel popcorn. I last had it around December 2019.

If I was on a desert island with little to eat my two choices of snacks would be ramen and popcorn because I have a big huge weakness for popcorn and just about any kind of popcorn I really like. I used to eat microwave popcorn a lot but then I discovered the bagged popcorn and the bagged butter popcorn is really good especially CVS's popcorn which has a flavor of it's own and next time if you happen to go to CVS pick up several bags of their popcorn and you'll see what I mean when you taste it. Every holiday season my mom buys two cans of popcorn and we eat the first can during Thanksgiving and the other can we save for Christmas and my mom just loves the cheddar cheese popcorn and I like the white cheddar popcorn also that comes in the cans and we love popcorn so much Mom orders from The Popcorn Factory a lot

Your combos sound tasty and might be a good solution. Luckily I don’t have to watch my salt (now anyways)

And no doubt about it, McDonald’s food is delicious - I am going from memory though as my last “food” there was in October 2011. All of it though, pretty much sends my blood sugar into the stratosphere. But man a Filet-O-Fish sandwich with tons of tartar sauce, French fries and a shake was divine.

I can eat nuts freely, except for cashews(which technically are not a nut). Nuts don’t raise my blood sugar much but I have to avoid them with meals. Too much fat at a meal ends up upsetting my stomach after I take Metformin when finished.

I like fish sandwiches. I got into the habit of using mustard instead of some less-healthy options. Still though, I'm watching how much fried food comes my way -- like having potatoes out of the oven, instead of fries. There are some twice-baked potato recipes that are larrifin' good...!

I'm sorry you're no longer at liberty to have some foods you used to enjoy. Glad that you will be around for a very long time though...! I have an uncle who is diabetic, but his wife has kept a really close eye on his foods. He turns 82 this year.

Aldi stores at Christmastime have brought out a popcorn drizzled in chocolate and white chocolate. Really an example of decadence. So tasty!

I ate too much caramel corn a while back. I needed the plastic tub right away -- I was painting at my brother's house while he vacationed, and found that his paint can had sprung a leak. So of course I ate all of the corn, instead of keeping it for later. I'm still recovering from that binge...!

You've hit upon a true weakness I have, I really love all ranch and nacho cheese tortilla chips. Also cheese puffs -- and onion ring snacks (like Funyons). Your tastes are so similar to mine, it's uncanny -- remember we talked about Tuna Helper and Egg McMuffins, we would have no trouble if we were deciding on what to eat together...!! :)

You may not have a Kroger store in your area, but their "Private Selection" chips are really good. I can eat their plain ones with no sauces or dips, they're just right -- crispy and flavorful.

I really like popcorn too. Of all the “munchie” snack foods it’s a healthier choice. But I really have to practice portion control with it. I flavor mine with a lot of grated cheese so I limit myself to a cup.

I often eat nuts when I’m craving something crunchy. All of them are good for me except cashews as they are the highest in carb content.

As I've aged and was eating everything all my life, and no diabetes, but I watch labs and watch my sugars as I don't want any diabetic issues to worry about at my late date. I don't think parents ever had diabetes but maybe they were never checked either. They ate everything and lived pretty well into their 90's. On other health boards I read about the terrible issues from diabetes, and we can control it and probably genetics plays a roll.

I have to resist bringing a lot into my house, if it's not here, it's not in my mouth.

Just popped a new pot, and this time added a little more cayenne, omg how good. Then I got to thinking about cayenne and pain and there is a lot of info on easing pain with cayenne, I worked with cayenne many yrs ago to lower blood pressure. So now I'm going to start taking more capsules daily to see if the pepper reduces my OA pain issues.

Love love love finding new finds for my health.

That you have an A1C of 5.5 at 82 is damn good; I’d kill for a 5.5–if I’m very very lucky I might get it now that I’m taking Metformin and keeping my daily carb consumption to about 75g a day.

Absolutely, the complications from diabetes are gruesome, and if you want good blood sugar (for a diabetic) you can pretty much kiss all the “comfort foods” goodbye. I’ve found reasonable substitutes for many of them though. Popcorn is probably the healthiest of all the grain snacks. Nuts are good for me to snack on though, excluding cashews.

I agree with you completely about junk food that’s tempting—I don’t bring it home either.
