Network features 80s and 90s hits ‘Drew Carey,’ ‘Murphy Brown,’ ‘Growing Pains’
Nexstar Media said it plans to launch Rewind TV, a new digital subchannel airing classic sitcoms from the 1980s and 1990s, on Sept. 1.
With cord-cutting more viewers are turning not just to streaming, but to over the air digital multicast channels, and broadcasters are launching channels featuring vintage series to take advantage of the demand.
Rewind TV will reach 50 million homes at launch, or about 40% of U.S. television households, Nexstar said. It will be carried on digital subchannels by TV stations, including outlets in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
The new network will feature shows from the 1980s and 1990s, including The Drew Carey Show, Murphy Brown, The Facts of Life, Growing Pains, Wings, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Who’s the Boss and Family Ties.
Nexstar already owns one of the oldest digital broadcast networks with Antenna TV, originally started by Tribune Broadcasting, which Nexstar acquired. Antenna TV will focus on programming from the 1960s and 1970s, including reruns of Johnny Carson on weeknights.
“This year marks Antenna TV’s 10-year anniversary, and it continues growing and finding new audiences,” said Sean Compton, president of Nexstar Media Inc.’s Networks Division. “To complement Antenna TV’s strong following with Baby Boomers, we created Rewind TV to give Gen X viewers a network dedicated to their own nostalgic comedy classics.”
Nexstar is not the only company launching digital channels, which are becoming a substantial business.
Earlier this month, Tegna launched Twist, a digital multicast channel aimed at women with unscripted lifestyle shows including Dance Moms, Tabatha Takes Over and Flipped Out. Twist was initially available in 43 markets.
Tegna bought two other multicast networks from Cooper Media for $77 million in 2019. The networks are adventure-oriented Quest and Justice, which was relaunched as True Crime last year.
E.W. Scripps plans to launch two new multicast networks on July 1, One is Defy, with unscripted programming aimed at men with the slogan “Here’s to the Mavericks.” . The other is TrueReal, featuring reality shows, mainly off-cable from A+E Networks, aimed at women 25 to 54. TrueReal was originally called Doozy, but it was quickly rebranded.
In 2017, Scripps bought Katz Networks for $302 million, Katz operated Bounce, Escape, Grit and Laff channels featuring vintage shows targeting viewers based on genres and demographics. It has since launched additional channels including Court TV.
The Katz Networks had profits of $62.5 million, up 45% in 2020, on revenue of $257.5 million, up 13.4%.
The Katz Networks are now part of Scripps National Networks unit along with Ion Media.
Some of the stations that had carried Katz networks will be carrying Nexstar’s new Rewind TV. Scripps is moving its channels to Ion stations it now owns, reducing the distribution fees it pays.
In October, Scripps plans to launch Newsy, its streaming news channel, as a free over-the-air network as well on Oct.1.
Last year, Byron Allen bought digital multicast networks This TV and Light TV from MGM.
Weigel Broadcasting Co. is another player in the multicast business with one of the oldest and highest rated networks, MeTV. It also operates Movies! Network in cooperation with Fox Television Stations, and Decades, H&I and Start TV in association with CBS Television Stations.
In addition to owning 198 TV stations in its broadcasting division, Nexstar’s networks division operates Antenna TV, the NewsNation cable TV network (formerly WGN America) and WGN Radio in Chicago.
VisualSensation 04-26-2021, 11:28 AM I was looking forward to this announcement, but it leaves me somewhat disappointed. All of the Rewind shows are simply rehashes of what AntennaTV or some other diginet has already shown.

Maybe by giving the 80s and 90s shows a dedicated channel, that will make more room for TRUE classics on AntennaTV?

Does anyone really believe those shows are unscripted? I think what they mean by that is that if anyone on camera forgets their lines, everyone just giggles, and they don't have to bother reshooting the scene.

The John Larroquette Show is a bit of a surprise.
I was surprised to see it on there as well.

Yep, Ellen would be nice to see on Rewind TV as well.

Wow, I don't see any trace of shows like Benson, Coach, Gimme a Break, or Silver Spoons but they could come later I suppose.
If it does well enough, then I could see all of those shows coming.
awesome hope i get this channell
Me too.
Svenfan1234 04-26-2021, 01:58 PM If it does well enough, then I could see all of those shows coming.
Me too. Also no It's a Living...yet. And we know for sure that Antenna TV will now be solely dedicated to the '50s, '60s and '70s (although I'm sure some exceptions like Johnny Carson, Three's Company, The Jeffersons, Alice, One Day at a Time, etc. will be made that ran until the '80s but had most of their run in the 1970s). Also would be nice to see shows like Charles in Charge, Kate & Allie & Perfect Strangers on here.
Svenfan1234 04-26-2021, 01:59 PM Me too.
I'm very certain I'll get this channel since I already get Antenna TV, it'll probably be added as the next channel up for me from Antenna TV.
I'm very certain I'll get this channel since I already get Antenna TV, it'll probably be added as the next channel up for me from Antenna TV.
We probably won't get the channel because our area no longer has Antenna TV, but you never know though.
Plater of Everything 04-26-2021, 02:33 PM Does anyone by any chance know what the affiliate lineup will be?
Svenfan1234 04-26-2021, 02:36 PM We probably won't get the channel because our area no longer has Antenna TV, but you never know though.
I think it's safe to say that most of the stations carrying Antenna TV right now will carry Rewind TV starting in September, especially now that the Scripps-owned stations will be going to the ION stations instead, like Court TV, Laff, and Grit, so it'll definitely open up more channel space for Rewind TV. Cable...who knows. Locally, I'm sure it'll depend on the area.
TVLegend 04-26-2021, 04:45 PM There was a rumor about this awhile back. Anybody remember?
dhuffman1980 04-26-2021, 05:44 PM Here in Peoria, Illinois WMBD is our CBS affiliate and is owned by Nexstar. The subchannels they currently have are Bounce, Laff, and Court TV Mystery. And we lost Antenna TV a little over a year ago and I suspect that Antenna and the new Rewind channel will head to WMBD once the contract for the current subchannels they carry expire.
cnnbcbs 04-26-2021, 06:24 PM This is such a bad idea. The programming guy at MeTV pointed out that shows don't become classics just because they get old. It's pretty broadly accepted that TV in the 1980s was horrendous. Piling it up really high won't make it any better than it was then.
"broadly accepted" 😆 way to project your opinion. Eighties had plenty of classics, it was also the decade that the family sitcom came back in a big way.
cnnbcbs 04-26-2021, 06:26 PM There was a rumor about this awhile back. Anybody remember?
Yeah, at the start of the year there were rumors that Antenna Tv was gonna do a spin-off channel with 80s and 90s shows.
Svenfan1234 04-26-2021, 07:01 PM FYI: The Drew Carey Show, The John Larroquette Show, & Suddenly Susan aren't coming until 2022 on Rewind TV. Caroline in the City comes in the fall.
icecream 04-26-2021, 07:03 PM Since Rewind will be airing The John Laroquette Show, they might as well get Dave's World also. Mr. Belvedere really should be brought back. The Wonder Years, Boy Meets World, and Blossom would be nice pickups, the Savage brothers' shows would be a natural pairing. I want both Antenna TV and Rewind, but not at the expense of LAFF. Bounce, whatever Escape became, Justice, and Grit I wouldn't miss if they left.
Merry24 04-26-2021, 08:34 PM Thank you for posting this info. Like another poster said I hope Antenna TV will Return to more older programming.
I do have some questions hopefully the blog or other posters can answer.
1. I hope I won’t loose Antenna TV for Rewind. Like another poster said I hope they add Rewind to the next channel up though. When will people know if they get Rewind and when will they know if there Antenna TV status isn’t being jeopardize.
2. The article says Antenna TV will be airring 60’s and 70’s. Does this mean mainly 60’s & 70’s. There not going to neglect 50’s programming?
3. Remembering how NICK at NITE & TVLand were back in the day. Will Who’s The Boss only air on Rewind or will it air on both? Same with Holiday Programming example Christmas Through The Years stunt. Will the stunt air on both channels or will Antenna TV have there own Christmas stunt while Rewind has there own Christmas stunt?
4. With a lot of shows already left or will leave Antenna is this an indication that Antenna TV will be adding ALOT of different older programming in September? There not planning on Returning Antenna TV Theater? If so any teasers on the shows coming to Antenna TV in September 2021?
5. It says Johnny Carson will still air on Antenna TV every Weeknight is that the Johnny Carson from the 60’s & 70’s or is it Johnny Carson from the 80’s & 90’s on Antenna TV?
Route66Fan 04-26-2021, 08:36 PM Out of all the diginets coming this year, Rewind TV is more interesting to me. The others, not so much.
Crusinforabrusin2.5 04-26-2021, 08:42 PM Maybe Antenna TV can show quality tv shows for once. The 1980s had a lot of junk and with a few exceptions (The Golden Girls, Cheers, Roseanne, and The Cosby Show), there just weren't many good sitcoms. Most of those 80s sitcoms have aged poorly too

I think people are referring to when they say the 80s had a lot of junk is the quality and increase in vulgarity. Not saying that the 80s was totally vulgar, it just didn’t quite have that “wholesome, innocent, subtle” feeling that the 50s-70s era had. It was a new era and scene. I do agree 100% when people say some 80s sitcoms have aged poorly.
Route66Fan 04-26-2021, 11:22 PM In the Kansas City area, Nexstar owns WDAF-TV, which carries Antenna TV on Ch. 4.2, Court TV on Ch. 4.3 (Also seen on KPXE-TV, Ch. 50.2.) & TBD on Ch. 4.4. I think that Rewind TV will replace Court TV.
BigManMike 04-26-2021, 11:24 PM I just hope Rewind doesn’t crunch the credits.
Route66Fan 04-26-2021, 11:49 PM I just hope Rewind doesn’t crunch the credits.
They probably will, but only on the shows\episodes that don't have scenes playing during the end credits.
brtcmfn 04-27-2021, 01:23 AM I looked at the current lineup of Antenna TV and they are airing for a week:
80's series that cross over to the 90's: 36 hours (i.e. 227, Designing Women)
70's series that cross over to the 80's: 9 hours (i.e. Three's Company, One day at a time)
So they will need to fill 36 or 45 hours of series from the 50's-70's on Antenna TV.
Rewind TV has initially 21 series, so either they are going to air multiple episodes of the same series in a day, or they are going to possibly duplicate the lineup twice a day (If they are not going to add informercials) Any one else have any thoughts?
And I would not expect any major lineup changes on Antenna TV till the launch of Rewind TV.
FYI: The Drew Carey Show, The John Larroquette Show, & Suddenly Susan aren't coming until 2022 on Rewind TV. Caroline in the City comes in the fall.
How do you know?
Svenfan1234 04-27-2021, 09:57 AM How do you know?
It's on their website.
favoriteshow 04-27-2021, 12:27 PM Already shows like The Facts of Life have been removed from Antenna's daytime lineup, while it airs shows like McHale's Navy.
But some of the late 90's programs like Suddenly Susan or Caroline in the City were cancelled under 5 years and aren't that appealing as a re-run. And while not a sitcom, a few series like Beverly Hills 90210 would probably fit in well on a Rewind TV in that 90s TV group.

And I would not expect any major lineup changes on Antenna TV till the launch of Rewind TV.Three's Company and One Day at a Time are considered primarily 70s shows that aired the tail end of their run for a few years in the 80s. Those two would remain on Antenna TV. And it sounds like 80s Johnny Carson will still air on Antenna as he is their flagship show and wasn't on the list of Rewind shows. With all the newer shows leaving Antenna, it is high time The Jack Benny Program got an hour on weekday afternoons.
icecream 04-27-2021, 12:38 PM It is sad but not surprising to see Benson get treated like garbage and not even air on Rewind when it launches. It is more surprising Coach won't be moving over as Coach has always done well, but maybe they need to fill the Antenna schedule more as the selection of pre 80s shows they have is a lot less.
icecream 04-27-2021, 12:39 PM https://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2021/04/antenna-tvs-companion-network-rewind-tv.html
icecream 04-27-2021, 12:41 PM Mork and Mindy is a show that straddled both 70s and 80s decades. I would have kept it on Antenna TV as Rewind already has a lot more shows, plus season 1 which was all 70s was easily Mork and Mindy's best season.

Yeah, I think Antenna will keep the sitcoms like Three's Company, Barney Miller, The Jeffersons, etc. and 80s and 90s Johnny Carson but everything else (or mostly everything else) will be on Rewind. From what I understand, Antenna will have nothing that solely started in the 80s or solely in the 90s aside from Johnny Carson, according to the blog & press release earlier in the thread. So shows like Coach, Gimme a Break, It's a Living, Benson, & Silver Spoons that are not on the launch lineup for Rewind will most likely leave Antenna entirely (especially Benson as it's not airing right now at all) but I could definitely see all five shows coming to Rewind at some point since they are 80s and 90s sitcoms. We'll see about them coming, but they'll be off Antenna entirely, and I'm assuming they'll get more 60s and 70s sitcoms in September (would be nice to see ones like Mister Ed & The Patty Duke Show) to fill the gaps left by no more 80s sitcoms.
Svenfan1234 04-27-2021, 12:51 PM It is sad but not surprising to see Benson get treated like garbage and not even air on Rewind when it launches. It is more surprising Coach won't be moving over as Coach has always done well, but maybe they need to fill the Antenna schedule more as the selection of pre 80s shows they have is a lot less.
Are you insinuating that you think that Coach will still be on Antenna's lineup come September? Because they'll be solely, aside from Johnny Carson, focusing on sitcoms from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Coach will most likely move to Rewind in the future, but probably not yet as Antenna has played it a lot so it must need a rest for awhile but since they are adding three new shows in 2022 (Rewind, that is), they'll likely add some more of the shows formerly aired by Antenna. Antenna will just most likely add more 60s and 70s sitcoms starting this fall. It would be totally unrealistic to think that Coach, a 90s sitcom, would still be on Antenna, a channel meant for sitcoms from the 50s, 60s, and 70s once they change their format to that.
icecream 04-27-2021, 12:52 PM Bachelor Father should return to Antenna TV in September. That show has really been missed.

But if it is just what they have the rights to now, doesn't seem that would be enough to fill out the schedule.

Majority of what they air now is from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and 80s and 90s are mostly Weekends. So they could just air extra showings of shows like Barney Miller, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, Alice, Three's Company, etc. on Weekends and probably bring back shows like Maude as well to fill some gaps to start with but I'm sure they'll add a few new shows in September as well. Time will tell, but I just think it's unrealistic to think that once they change their format that they would still air 90s sitcoms even though they've stated that that's not what Antenna will be for starting September, so Coach is 100% going to be gone starting September, as will Gimme a Break, Silver Spoons and It's a Living. They'll have no place on a 50s-70s sitcom network.

Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXST), announced that it will launch Rewind TV, a digital subchannel offering a slate of classic television sitcom hits from the 1980s and 1990s, on September 1, 2021. We first broke this news a few months ago, but now the official announcement has come with the name of the network and programming info. At its launch, Rewind TV will reach 40 percent of U.S. television households, or nearly 50 million homes, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Rewind TV will be available on newly designated or recently vacated digital subchannels licensed to Nexstar, full details on station carriage will be coming in the coming months.
Rewind TV will air a bunch of series from the Antenna TV library, but they have also acquired some new sitcoms: The Drew Carey Show, Suddenly Susan, Caroline in the City, and The John Larroquette Show. We already announced Caroline in the City is coming in 2021 and vaguely hinted about Suddenly Susan in 2022 (but now both are coming to Rewind instead of Antenna). We also hinted a return for Mad About You, but no word on that one yet. The Drew Carey Show and The John Larroquette Show are totally new and will start in 2022 with Suddenly Susan. Joining Caroline in the City this September on Rewind are Antenna TV faves 227, Becker, Dear John, Designing Women, Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Family Ties, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, The Hogan Family, Mork & Mindy, Murphy Brown, My Two Dads, NewsRadio, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Who’s the Boss, and Wings all will migrate over to Rewind TV in September. Some of these series are resting a bit right now on Antenna TV, as we mentioned. Nexstar's companion digital network, Antenna TV, will continue to air some of the most popular programming from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, including weeknight reruns of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and sitcoms such as Three's Company, Bewitched and The Jeffersons. Stay tuned for much more information on Rewind TV!
It's on their website.
Thank you.

Format change on Antenna starting September 100% confirmed.
Also, if Coach is such a big hit, supposedly, for Antenna, shouldn't it be going to Rewind with the others 80s and 90s sitcoms? Why are they hesitating to put it on at first, because clearly it isn't going to be on Antenna, unless Coach isn't a big hit for them. I can't see it any other way to be perfectly honest.

Merry24 04-27-2021, 01:31 PM Looking at the current line-up. Assuming no schedule changes will happen in the 3rd quarter Summer Schedule 2021 I would assume for Antenna TV in the fall 2021...
Reguarding
Monday’s-Friday’s
4pm-5pm THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY (Replace Three’s Company)
5pm-6pm THREE’S COMPANY (Replace Gimmie a Break)
11pm-12AM ?! (Replace Coach)
12AM-1AM ?! (Replace Designing Women)
1AM-2AM ?! (Replace Murphy Brown)
Saturday’s
7AM-7pm ?! (Will get Replaced I assumed)
Sunday’s
9AM-1AM & 2AM-5AM ?! (Will get Replaced I assumed)
1960'sTVfan 04-27-2021, 01:40 PM Bachelor Father should return to Antenna TV in September. That show has really been missed.
I would tune in to see Bachelor Father if it returned to the schedule.
I would also like to see a few more of these one season wonder sitcoms like The Cara Williams Show, Many Happy Returns, Hey Landlord, Love On A Rooftop, He And She.
Please Don't Eat The Daisies ran for two seasons and I'd like to see that show as well.
I'm curious if The Joey Bishop Show might return to Antenna TV, it doesn't really matter to me personally because I already recorded all the episodes but I'm just curious.
Antenna TV could be a great channel if they ran complete unedited episodes of all the sitcoms and stopped doing the credit crunches but I imagine that's probably asking too much.
icecream 04-27-2021, 01:54 PM I would schedule this for September weekdays on Antenna TV. Decades getting switched around shouldn't matter, Decades does that with their shows and changes around the decades.

Leaving- the 80s and 90s sitcoms
5-6AM Dennis the Menace
6-7AM McHale's Navy

3-5AM Infomercials- I am not a fan but the money from them would help Antenna TV stop their credit crunch. And the infomercials are only scheduled for these graveyard hours.
icecream 04-27-2021, 03:19 PM This is what I would schedule for Rewind weekdays in September, weekends could be various marathons. It is a real shame they have no use for Benson.
5-7AM Infomercials

I agree, Bachelor Father should return. ALL THE EPISODES! (Someone [Universal] needs to solve the music issues and cough up the cash to renew those rights.) Practically none of season 5 is shown.
Infomercials are a good idea--maybe they can get rid of a minute of those garbage ads per half hour, and as you say, play out the credits.)

If Coach were one of the best performing shows on Antenna, it would undoubtedly be on Rewind in the fall in a good timeslot. The fact that it isn't is very good indication of their actual feelings toward it rather than potential contractual obligations to air a show. Regardless, doesn't matter as it will be gone for who knows how long come September, and that couldn't come fast enough for me.

Yes, Bachelor Father! Also Mister Ed, Patty Duke and The Real McCoys I think would be very nice additions to Antenna. Also, Welcome Back Kotter, Chico and the Man & The New Dick Van Dyke Show would be nice for the 70s.

Yes, it would be nice to see SOME network give proper treatment to The Real McCoys. Cozi TV put them in the wee hours, and they run as many ads as the Viacom networks.

It would be very nice to see, and seeing as they have gotten shows from that distributor before (SFM who distributes Joey Bishop & Good Morning World), I don't see it as that far fetched that they could get it in the future.
BigManMike 04-27-2021, 06:23 PM I’m guessing What’s Happening Now is also leaving since right now they are running it excessively on weekends.
Pavan 04-27-2021, 11:46 PM There are at least 2 shows coming to Antenna TV later this year.

Make Room For Daddy could also work for Antenna or Me as a great addition to the older shows. Whoever has it now is not doing a good job with it. The same goes for both The Partridge Family and The Monkees, two great shows that deserve better treatment (like here at home where the Bradys and Partridges run back to back in the afternoons, followed by Soap and Benson. Now that's smart programming!) Maybe they can just get rid of Hazel or switch it to the early mornings. That would solve a few problems right there.

Cozi had Make Room For Daddy and it was mostly aired in the middle of the night. The only good thing that happened was that the episodes were remastered, and the 10th and 11th seasons became available (previously, they had never been syndicated).
It could replace one of the Dragnets (6am) on MeTV.
LUNCH 04-28-2021, 02:18 PM With an exception or 2, personally I do not consider TV made in the 1990s as classic TV. I agree with an earlier point that was made, mentioning just because a show reaches a certain age does not make it a classic. The classic era of television really is 1950s- early to mid 1980s TV in my opinion. However the idea for a comedy channel showing older shows is a good one. And as mentioned, it will probably open up more space on Antenna TVs line up for more shows made during the classic era.
Too2muchtv 04-29-2021, 05:01 AM Most 80s and especially 90s tv sucked in my opinion, I’m much more interested in knowing what 60s and 70s shows will be airing on antenna tv.
LUNCH 04-29-2021, 02:55 PM 1980s television was a mixed bag. It was ok in general however the quality of shows overall dramatically declined from the great TV of the 1970s. The 1990s were a poor decade for TV, especially going into the mid 1990s. However 90s TV was still better than 21st century TV. Of course that is not saying much because a test pattern is better than 21st century so called TV.

METV had Make room for daddy Years ago same with CoziTV
stevea 04-30-2021, 09:53 PM METV had Make room for daddy Years ago same with CoziTV
Yep, MeTV had it in the early morning--fewer seasons than Cozi (the standard syndication episodes from season 5 thru 9 whereas Cozi had seasons 4 thru 11) but MeTV doesn't overdo the ads like Cozi does.
Svenfan1234 05-16-2021, 06:04 PM Just noticed on https://rewindtv.com/shows/ that My Two Dads & NewsRadio aren't "coming" until 2022?
I noticed that The Drew Carey Show also isn't coming until 2022.

That's something I won't have to worry about since as of today "Make Room For Daddy" can be seen at 2:00 pm on CHCH TV in Canada. That's PM and not AM which proves that someone out there knows what they're doing.
We won't be able to get Rewind TV in Canada but we already have a Rewind channel that shows movies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Personally, I prefer the TV shows instead but the movies are still nice to watch on the weekends when there's nothing on.

Svenfan1234 09-01-2021, 12:02 PM So, just so you guys know, Rewind crunches their credits although not in the same way Antenna does and they DO (at least where I am) show an on-air logo bug that Antenna doesn't. I don't know if the logo thing is a national thing, but it's not really a surprise that Rewind crunches credits like Antenna since they're owned by the same company.

I was afraid they would crunch the credits but I’m not surprised since their owned by the same group that owns Antenna. I don’t get Rewind and I’m surprised because my Antenna affiliate is a Nexstar O&O so I figured they would add another sub channel for Rewind. But anyways, what does their crunch look like? And is the music muted for something else?

The two credits are side-by-side but unlike Antenna's, these are side by side without any overlapping or anything announcing what's up next.
Svenfan1234 11-14-2021, 02:48 PM Suddenly Susan (and likely the others -- The John Laroquette Show, The Drew Carey Show, My Two Dads, NewsRadio, maybe others) joining in January on Rewind.
Rewind TV is having a Hogan Family 35 episode marathon for its 35th anniversary that started yesterday.

LittleRoom02 12-07-2021, 06:04 AM Ok I'm not sure if my affiliate is just messing up or what, but I just saw The Drew Carey Show. Was that a mistake or something? I looked at my TV's guide and it was airing in the 3am spot where Designing Women encores usually air and when I looked further down, I saw it in Wings' 6pm spot.
LittleRoom02 12-07-2021, 01:58 PM I looked at my TV guide again and Drew Carey is in 227's 7pm spot. My bad.
