The gay character Julio (https://simpsons.fandom.com/wiki/Julio), who previously dated Waylon Smithers, has been recast with the voice of Tony Rodriguez, who is gay and of Cuban descent like his character. Rodriguez made his debut in the role last month. The casting change was partially prompted by a viral video showing every LGBTQ joke on The Simpsons (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIXK9_bnHYA). Rodriguez responded by making a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgMoqJYn2Ow) pleading to join The Simpsons, which caught the attention of producer Matt Selman.

Isn't the whole point of acting to play different characters and play characters unlike your real self?

All of this "characters have to be played by actors of the same race and same everything" just goes against the whole concept of acting. Everybody is just playing themselves.
