When doing my morning music routine I found Phil Collins's album Going Back and it has him doing covers of soul songs and I wondered what made Phil do it? Was Phil Collins a fan of The Motown Sound growing up or has Phil always liked soul music and wanted to attract the R&B audience? I was shocked at how well Phil Collins did soul covers with ease and Going Back is a fun album. I thought Phil Collins had retired from music due to health problems after his last album Testify came out and was this album also his comeback album?

I heard he quit the drums due to hand/wrist problems, but I don't know if was planning to quit music altogether.
Phil Collins is too old to have any pop hits these days, no matter how good of a song he records. So whatever album he makes is probably just for his own fun.
It seems he probably gave up on pop by the latter half of the 1990s, when he made one or two big band jazz albums. His cover of "The Way You Look Tonight" is a favorite of mine.
